Technical Writing (EN-249)

The UAW website www.uaw.org has an amazing platform for the members of the United Auto Workers to reference the current information and news about the UAW. This site is quite user friendly offering anything from current updates on how to organize. It also offers a newsletter called Solidarity. I have chosen to look in the archives and found an interesting post on General Motors retirees and their benefits. The first thing that comes to mind for me is the validity of the information given. I have chosen to research one article, VEBA funding Modified, Solidarity Jan 21 2011. In May of 2009 the Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association Trust (VEBA) of the United Auto Workers (UAW) was proposed to be modified through the General Motors National Negotiating Committee. “An 11-member board of directors, consisting of six independent directors approved by the courts, and five UAW designees, will administer the VEBA” (Solidarity Jan212011). VEBA directors now have the authority to modify the benefits available to UAW retirees to match available funding sources as of Jan. 1, 2010, when the trust took over responsibility for paying benefits (Solidarity Jan212011). VEBA is a stand-alone tax-exempt trust which uses monies provided by the company to ensure employee health benefits. The monies can be primarily stock in the fore said company (Borzi 2). “The trust is expected to diversify assets to provide the greatest possible level of protection for UAW retirees” (Solidarity Jan212011). VEBA is an uncertain path for retirees for VEBA relies on the assets that it has to supply health benefits. If the assets diminish so do the existing benefits and benefit levels can change. The stand-alone VEBA will shield the retirees from any bankruptcy or further company financial problems (Borzi 3). With the depressed

Gender Discrimination in the Workplace

...I. Introduction Although the federal government enacted laws to eliminate gender discrimination in the workplace, it remains an issue on several levels. Specifically, women find themselves the victims of discrimination simply because of their gender. Although there are anti-discrimination laws in place, many employers still find ways around them. Currently, the courts simply award monetary compensation to those women who sue current or former employers. However, businesses found guilty of committing the crime of gender discrimination must endure stricter operating sanctions. The author was witness to the unethical and illegal treatment of a former elderly female employee whose work ethic was exemplary. The former employee (Shelly) received constant positive feedback from clients, students, and peers. She was employee of the year for three consecutive years because of her innate ability to settle disputes amicably. Shortly after her promotion to Assistant Director, the department hired a new instructor who was also an alumnus. He made it very clear that he disagreed with Shelly’s methods and relationship with the students and clinical coordinators. Overtime he demonstrated his ability to build a rapport with the coordinators and other program official; he was very ambitious. His relationship with Shelly bordered aggression and antagonism, but she remained professional and focused. However, when the coordinators began complaining about her performance to the Director...

Implenting Martial Arts in Dps

...Situation Analysis Detroit Public Schools is in a transitional process striving for improvement. As budget challenges force retirement of seasoned teachers and unemployment for others, resources and extracurricular activities share a fate of extinction. Courses that promote creativity to produce young writers, musicians and artist and programs that build inner strength, discipline, teaming and socialization such as physical education are eliminated or severely scaled down. According to an interview with Mrs. Cohen, UAW representative of Hamilton Elementary, $10,000 is required to educate each student, but Detroit Public Schools is receiving $7,000 per student. Although, the program “No Child Left Behind” was enacted to give children equal opportunity despite extraordinary circumstantial, academic and environmental conditions, inner-city students are beginning their educational endeavor discounted and disadvantaged. Educators are frustrated, many parents are uninvolved, and the children are angry and becoming more violent daily. Regular episodes of physical violence plague Detroit Public Schools; thus, a new channel such as Martial Arts needs integration into the school system to redirect instability. The Need School violence has negatively impacted the learning process and has forced the federal and state governments to enact programs for safer schools. According to Kym Worthy, prosecutor of Wayne County, “School violence is an issue that has plagued America for years...

...INTRODUCTION TO MACROECONOMICS E202 $ ¥ Dr. David A. Dilts Department of Economics Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences Indiana-Purdue University-Fort Wayne June 1, 1993 Revisions: May 1994, December 1995, July 1996, November, 2000, May 2003, May 2006 PREFACE This Course Guide was developed in part because of the high cost of college textbooks, and in part, to help organize students’ studying by providing lecture notes together with the reading assignments. This Guide is provided to the student online at the Department of Economics website. Jayla Heller, the Department’s secretary has been kind enough to go through all of the frustration and hard work to put the guide in the appropriate format and put it online. To her goes my gratitude. The department, neither school, nor the professor make anything whatsoever from this Guide. In fact, the department’s budget and the professor’s own resources are used in the writing of the Guide, and the numerous draft copies that are produced in the revisions of this document. Like the sign in the Mom and Pop bait shop on Big Barbee Lake says, “This is a non-profit organization, wasn’t planned to be – it just worked out that way.” Well, actually it was planned to be a non-profit enterprise in this case. The professor also wishes to acknowledge the fact that several students have proposed changes, improvements, caught errors, and helped to make this document more useful as a learning tool. Naturally, any errors of omission...
