D-Day letter home:

Dear Abbie,

Hi, how are you?, how are things with work?. I hope everything is okay with you and everyone back home, sorry I have not been able to write sooner but I had to do chores round the cold camp site, for god sake. But the good news is that I am slowly getting used to my surroundings.

Well I am going to Piccadilly Circus beach in the morning to invade a small island where the Germans are known to have invaded and have secured well, they say it will not be easy but we should get through it, but I am having mixed feelings about the whole thing. My feelings about tomorrow are very scary and nerve racking. And hearing the sound of thunder going BOOM!! The storm is coming over the horizon and the hills and mountains.
At the moment I am at the camp and I am surrounded by lots of people and I have met loads of new friends with loads of different talents, the camp is not that roomy I have to sleep in a bunk bed and share a room with like 20 beds in one room and they are all bunk beds, some people snore or sleep talk. The Generals keep telling us that we have no friends hear and our best friend and our only friend is our gun. There is one person called Frazer though and he is a funny guy and his nickname is Joker because he cheers everyone up with jokes. I have been given the nickname Cowboy because I have a good aim with the sniper but I don’t think I have. The men are walking like the living dead because there so tired.
I don’t sleep without looking at our picture together and think of all the memories that we have had with each other. And I love and miss you so much and soon I will be in the house because my 4 year contract is nearly up so I get 1 year off or 2 and I will take you to a romantic holiday for 2 in Rome or something.
The conditions have not been bad in all fairness but we are apparently going into hells mouth don’t know why. But bit has been sunny and peachy so far. But the food hear is a living nightmare to eat it is like sloppy mushy peas and raw potatoes.
Hope to hear soon, I love you so much.
From your husband
Matt a.k.a Cowboy
