Management

...Introduction Leadership management and NLP Mastering self-awareness, and in order to become an extraordinary communicator, the leaders create the attributes of great self-awareness, resourcefulness, flexibility in behaviour and effectiveness, which all together develop their innate resilience. All this is necessary to establish a clear thinking, focused mind, personal grooming, and behavioural psychology and NLP can be applied here. According to Tosey (2008) neurolinguistic programing means a systematic linkage between an individual’s mental internal experience (also referred as ‘neuro’), language (‘linguistic’) and the patterns of behaviour (‘programming’). According to Walker (2004), this can further be distributed into three components, including: • Neuro: based on the neurology of feeling and thinking • Linguistic: usage of language to persuade or influence others and ourselves • Programming: guidelines on how to achieve the set goals Self-awareness on the other hand is the ability to know, understand and assess our own self, specifically the flow of our feelings, implicit weaknesses, latent talent which is not yet groomed by us and the areas of our life, which require attention and change. We also need to evaluate if we are guided by our moral values, or some kind of conditioning has been shaping us. Likewise, we also need to examine if our thoughts and actions are in compliance with the principles and beliefs we possess in mind. The ability to self-awareness is one...

Marconi Case

...£35bn to just a few million pounds, and a profit of £750m to a loss of some £5.6bn, one of the biggest in UK corporate history. Marconi grew out of GEC, the giant industrial conglomerate built by Arnold Weinstock. In a period when the UK’s industrial competitiveness, and its base, declined, GEC was one of the UK’s leading and most successful industrial enterprises. Weinstock, who died in 2002 at the age of 77, created GEC and was the UK’s leading industrialist for over 30 years. Weinstock graduated from the London School of Economics in 1944. He worked for the admiralty for three years before moving into property development. In 1954, he joined his father-in-law’s firm, Radio and Allied Industries, where he built a strong reputation for his managerial abilities. In 1961, the firm made a reverse takeover of the larger but struggling GEC. Weinstock became GEC’s Managing Director, a post he held for over 30 years until he retired in 1996. In his period as Managing Director, he turned GEC into one of the great British success stories, through a combination of acquisition and organic growth. In 1961, GEC took over AEI, and in 1968 they bought English Electric, the owners of Marconi. GEC’s acquisitions continued into the 1970s and 1980s. Under Weinstock, GEC acquired a portfolio of solid, well-regarded and profitable companies, including Hotpoint, Avery, Metropolitan Vickers, Yarrow Shipbuilders and Marconi. GEC’s last purchase under Weinstock was the VSEL shipyard at Jarrow, reflecting...

...rationally. In fact, market prices are frequently nonsensical.” ------------------------------------------------- This report will analysis the statement by Warren Buffett, and it considers the contrasting evidence on the validity of the observation on the Efficient Markets Hypothesis. The report briefly outlines the forms of the Efficient Market Hypothesis, the report also analysis’s the evidence both seminal and recent on the theory relating to the three forms of the hypothesis. It also examines the theoretical role and motivation of analysts in creating market efficiency; lastly it looks at alternative perspectives on the pricing of securities. Introduction In 1984 Warren Buffett penned an article titled “The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville”, based on a speech he had given on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his mentor Ben Graham’s legendary textbook, Security Analysis. In it, Buffett rejected the then growing (and now entrenched) view in academia that markets are ''efficient'' because ''stock prices reflect everything that is known about a company’s prospects and about the state of the economy.'' Warren Buffett argued against EMH, saying the preponderance of value investors among the world's best money managers rebuts the claim of EMH proponents that luck is the reason some investors appear more successful than others. (Hoffman, 2010) This report will either agree with Buffet or somewhat sit on the fence. A market is said to be efficient with respect to an...

Capital Structure

...Global Economic Review Vol. 37, No. 1, 107Á123, March 2008 Performance and Capital Structure of Privatized Firms in Europe ´ ´ MARIA JOSE ARCAS & PATRICIA BACHILLER Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Department of Accounting and Finance, University of Zaragoza, Zaragoza, Spain ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to analyze whether there are differences in performance between private firms and recently privatized firms in the European Union, as well as to determine whether ownership (state-owned versus private) and regulation affect capital structure. Focusing on economic reasons that justify privatizations, we analyze whether there are differences between recently privatized state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private firms in their profitability, leverage and efficiency during the period 1999Á2002. Also, we analyze the determinants of the capital structure of these firms. Contrary to previous studies, our results show that privatized firms are not less efficient than firms with private ownership. KEY WORDS: Privatization, efficiency, capital structure, regression, Wilcoxon test Summary In recent decades, the privatization of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) has been one of the most common policies carried out in economies worldwide and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries have also been involved in this phenomenon. Many studies have focused on the impact of privatization on the performance of the privatized firms...

Economic Survey

...India and the Global Economy 14 CHAPTER The big story of the last decade for India has been its arrival on the global scene. The Indian economy had broken free of the low-growth trap from the early 1980s. By the mid-1990s, following the economic reforms of 1991-3, India began to appear as a player of some significance in the global economy. Then, following the East Asian crisis of the late 1990s, and from the first years of the first decade of the 21st century there was no looking back. India’s exports began to climb, its foreign exchange reserves, which for decades had hovered around 5 billion dollars, rose exponentially after the economic reforms and in little more than a decade had risen to 300 billion dollars. Indian corporations that rarely ventured out of India were suddenly investing all over the world and even in some industrialized countries. When, in 2009, the Group of 20 (G-20) was raised to the level of a forum for leaders, India was a significant member of this global policy group. 14.2 The globalization of India has given rise to new opportunities but it has also brought with it new challenges and responsibilities. It means that the global economy can no longer be viewed from a spectator’s standpoint. What happens there has large implications for India. Every time there is a major financial crisis anywhere in the world, there is need to take brace position. And, in turn, the rise and fall of India’s growth rate has an impact on global growth and there...

Introduction

...BRITISH UNEMPLOYMENT AND MONETARY POLICY Dr Sushil Wadhwani Member, Monetary Policy Committee Bank of England Speech to be delivered to the Society of Business Economists on 2 December 1999. I am extremely grateful to Damon Clark, Joanne Cutler, Mark Dean, John Henderson and Duncan Melville for their help and advice on this work. I have also learnt a great deal by talking to William Brown, Richard Layard and Stephen Nickell. Ian Bond, Phil Evans, Paul Fisher, Mike Joyce, DeAnne Julius, Mervyn King and John Vickers provided me with helpful comments on an earlier version. The views expressed in this paper are personal and do not necessarily reflect any views held by either the Monetary Policy Committee or the Bank of England. 2 INTRODUCTION Many economists use a notion like the so-called ‘natural’ rate of unemployment (or the allied concept of the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment – the NAIRU, hereafter) in thinking about the labour market. Of course, the NAIRU is extremely difficult to measure, and, often, there is significant disagreement about where it is at a given moment in time. As I discuss below (in Section 2), since 1992, British economic forecasters have displayed a tendency to over-predict the level of unemployment, while simultaneously also over-predicting inflation. It is likely that these forecast errors have come from having been too gloomy about the NAIRU. In Section 3, I discuss econometric evidence suggesting that, in the 1990s...

Email: r.a.howell@sms.ed.ac.uk Investigating the LongTerm Impacts of Climate Change Communications on Individuals’ Attitudes and Behavior Rachel A. Howell1 Abstract To assess the effectiveness of climate change communications, it is important to examine their long-term impacts on individuals’ attitudes and behavior. This article offers an example study and a discussion of the challenges of conducting long-term investigations of behavioral change related to climate change communications (a vital and underresearched area). The research reported is a longitudinal panel study of the impacts on UK viewers of the climate change movie The Age of Stupid. The heightened levels of concern, motivation to act, and sense of agency about action that were initially generated by the movie did not measurably persist over the long term. The results also show that behavioral intentions do not necessarily translate into action. Data analysis raised issues concerning...
