“Un”Social Networking
We live in the time where communication is possible without having to exert so much energy into it. This is a time when social networking is the main source of our communication. Nowadays, we need only to have computers, cellular phones included, and a proper internet connection, to be able to communicate with someone at our fingertips. It seems that social networking has altered the world for the better, but is that all there is to this phenomenon? Do we really benefit from social networking? Although social networking may have changed the world for the better, it may also have a negative impact on a person. Such issues as causing distraction among youth, changing the way a person interacts with other people, and causing health problems are some of the problems created from the technological advancement of this day and age.
Social networks have been fabricated as the means of establishing and maintaining contacts and meetings in order to build online communities of people with similar interests and activities. These advancements could be more convenient for exchanging messages, following the latest trends, joining interest groups, and participating in real life events. Most know of the small-world phenomenon, soon after meeting a stranger, we are surprised to discover that we have a mutual friend, or we are connected through a short chain of acquaintances. In his article, Duncan Watts uses this intriguing phenomenon, colloquially called" six degrees of separation", as a prelude to a more general exploration. With an ever growing social outlet, this phenomenon is giving youth an easier way to bridge the gap of being connected to most. A curious survey showed that 62% of people age 16 and older believe that dwelling in the virtual environment is an integral part of their lives: It’s rapid, convenient, and informative. The Social Web

...Page 1 The Social Web Ericka Silva Computer Literacy INF103 Brett Ferns Dec. 10, 2012 RUNNING HEAD: Web Page 2 The Social Web What do we think of when we hear social web? A social web is a group of social networks that supports public interactions. Websites with advanced software are designed for supporting the communication between people. It is the term given for the World Wide Web as a kind of social media. Social web is everywhere; we have Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, and so many others. There are dating cites like eHarmony, okCupid and Match.com where people can go and meet new people and chat and find a relationship. There are even chat rooms and games that have social networks also. In my research paper I will address our use of the social web and how it has become a big part of our lives. The social web, which is also referred to as social networking, was first designed with the intention of making a way for people to interact with others over the internet. These sites are mostly formed around the connections of people of the same interests. It has become a new and exciting way for people all over the world to communicate with each other, without having to leave their own homes. It has become a thing of convenience for many people to turn on their computers or open an app and start communicating with family members, friends or even co-workers. We are now able to share photos, music and even use social networking to locate friends...

Facebook

...3. How will changing your Connection settings on Facebook help protect your privacy? The business model of Facebook is to sell the users information to the advertisers to form the target group for the advertisements. Facebook publishes the ‘likes’ of various advertisers’ product in sponsored stories. The published information includes the name, profile picture and the other basic personal information. Though the new policy of Facebook states the users’ ‘own and control their information’, the privacy policy is so complicated with over 170 information category that the users defaulted to ‘share’ because of which there is personal information flow in and out of Facebook. But changing the connection settings, you can avoid the sharing of your personal information and activities by default. Adding to that, these settings changes will also allow the users to choose which information of theirs can be shared with whom. Facebook is an encyclopedia of information and in general we follow certain pages, people and interests to know the progress and to learn information accordingly. By changing the connection settings, we can hide this information to protect our privacy. In certain situations where we would like to maintain our future plans a secret but still would like to have access to information on Facebook. Changing the connection settings on Facebook will help protect our privacy and share information with the targeted audience only. 4. Why are Facebook’s facial recognition...

Facebook

...It may have 30 million users worldwide, but you'll never find me on Facebook. The social networking phenomenon, which allows users to create profiles containing photos and lists of personal interests, exchange private or public messages, and join groups of friends, is the second most popular destination on the web. Nevertheless, it represents dangerous territory - a messy fingerprint that blurs the line between work and play, and one that could leave an indelible mark on your career. In March, in a poll of 500 employers by UK recruitment agency Poolia, two thirds admitted to regularly carrying out internet searches, including checking social networking sites including Facebook, MySpace and YouTube. An even larger poll, of 2000 workers and 600 employers, by the social networking site Viadeo suggested that one organisation in five carries out such checks - and that a quarter of those that did had rejected applicants as a result. Who's to say that those ‘hilarious' Ibiza holiday snaps won't find their way into the hands of an unimpressed potential employer? And do you really want to be struck off the candidate list before you've even got to the interview stage, on the pretext that the boss doesn't like what he's seen of you on a website that was supposed to be the private domain of trusted friends? There's also a good reason why firms are increasingly looking to ban Facebook in the office - quite simply, there are enough distractions in the workplace without obsessing over...

...social networking sites should be permanently banned, i am with this topic? I'll suggest a couple of possible reasons for arguing that social networking websites should be banned: Social networking sites bring privacy into the public doman. There are things abouteach of us that are best kept private and for good reason. We would generally reveal ourselves in the ways that we choose to those that we choose, except when it comes to the online world. It has been said that you can almost build up an entire profile of someone by their online habits. People are often naive about the dangers of identity theft, they stick to the same username from one site to the next, they post little snippets of information in various places without realising that each is like a piece of a jigsaw. If you find one common thread, such as a username, then it is relatively simple to find several pieces of one jigsaw, put them together, and you start to establish a comprehensive profile of that person. You might find out what they do for a living, the area in which they live, the names of their loved ones, their pets, their email address, their likes and dislikes, the list is endless. More and more people are becoming the victims of identity theft, if not for financial gain then for malicious purposes. Celebrities have had people pretend to be them on websites such as Twitter and Facebook, causing them a great deal of embarrassment. Everyday folk have been slandered, cyber bullied and impersonated...

The Progression of the Social Web

...The Progression of the Social Web Melanie Helm Info103: Computer Literacy (ADD1322E) Instructor Joan Rhodes July 1, 2013 The Progression of the Social Web From its humble beginning to the present day, it is mind boggling to think it has been a decade since the social web began and what is even crazier is that it has become an integral part of our everyday lives in modern society. There are now sites for virtually every special interest out there that we may have. There are now sites to share photos, videos, status updates, meeting new people, sharing recipes, sites to connect with old friends, and create new ones. It also seems there are social solutions for just about everything and every need. Social web has progressed in so many ways it is absolutely hard to keep up with these days. Usenets began in 1979 by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis. Usenet systems let users post articles or posts (referred to as “news”) to newsgroups. Usenets are the precursor of the RSS feed readers which are commonly used to follow blogs and news sites today. They do not have a central server or a dedicated administrator. Google groups and Yahoo!, which are group sites, use many of the original usenet systems. The first Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) were primarily hosted on personal computers and users could only use it one at a time and had to login using a computer modem. BBS’s first came into existence in the late 70s. Though in a much slower fashion, BBS’s were the first to let users logon...

...Response on “Is Social Networking Killing You?” Submitted by Zannatun Tabassum Binte Zaman ID: 13104146 Sub: ENG 101 Sec: 01 Submitted to Mr. Nihal Bin Hasan Nomita is one of my cousins. She is a student of class eight and she is studying in holy cross school. Among all cousins we are good friends. Every year during Eid-ul-Fitar we meet together and have fun. But in last Eid I was surprised at something. Nomita was talking with me but I can sense that she was not with me. She was taking with me and at a time she was typing in her mobile. Suddenly she asked me what status she will post in facebook wall. All of her talking was facebook related and I was being bored and moreover our taking was interrupted by her texting. I understood that she wanted to use facebook rather enjoying my company. So I told her to finish her job and join me. Long time passed but she did not come and I was shocked because it never happened before and what I saw make me astonished that she is completely absorbed in facebook. I guess she has a relation in facebook and it really seems to me ridiculous to wind up with a relation just seeing a profile. One may give wrong information about oneself to attract others. I became concerned if she has a relation and concern if she does something wrong. It is easy to done something wrong because people of this age are easily driven by their whim and curiosity. I discussed it with her .She said nothing and smiled. I also see the same scenario in my friend...

The Social Web: It Is What You Make It

...The Social Web: It is what you make it Instructor Debra Austin INF103 Computer Literacy Heather Miller August 6, 2012 The social web is a somewhat new and exciting place where people from all over the world can connect without leaving the comfort of their own homes. Like any type of newfangled technology there are upsides and downsides that need to be considered before deciding if this is a good or bad thing. Like many other activities that utilize time and provide an escape from the pressures of the day, the social web has many advantages and downfalls; however, it is up to each of us to decide whether to participate or not. According to oxforddictionaries.com, the Social Web, or the Social Network, is a “…dedicated website or other application which enables users to communicate with each other by posting information, comments, messages, images, etc.”. The current top five social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and MySpace. All of these are places where you can connect with others to share opinions, play games, share interests, and overall, it is a place to be social. This is a place where someone who has more of an introverted personality or low self-esteem can be popular or outgoing; a place where a person can connect with people from different countries that they may never visit. Some people compare how many “friends”, or contacts, they have made on these sites; many may be people that you have not actually met face to...
