Uncle In Gary Soto's Story 'The War Years'

Since we born into this world, Our family members play the most essential roles for us. Even though they have different semblance or characteristic, but they still can leave us memories which are full of happiness . However, they might have backgrounds that could not be told to us. For example, Gary Soto narrates about his uncle in his story “The War Years”. Gary elaborates his uncle, a retired soldier who has been serving in the Korean War, spends a good time with him and his siblings after the War. At first glance, Gary is a little scared of his uncle because of his semblance. Since he has just finished fighting a war and gets discharged. He looks and acts very gruff. As Gary describes,
“His face was dark with stubble and moles, creased from a hard sleep, For the first few days his snores were frightening.” (30) …show more content…
In Soto’s point of view, his uncle has been through a horrible situation in the battlefield and looks not approachable. Especially his uncle has several aggressive characteristics such as his tattoo of a blue panther with red claws and frightening snores. All of these cause Gary’s stereotypes toward his uncle after their first meeting. Few days later, Gary is no longer afraid of his uncle anymore. He starts the interaction with his uncle, such as pressing his thumb into his uncle’s tattoo, watching him snore and sharing plums with his uncle. Not only that, while his parents work, his uncle looks after him and his siblings and plays with them. Gary’s uncle really performs another characteristic which is totally opposite of his semblance.
