1.3 Demolition of Existing Structure Construction where there is an existing building requires demolition of such existing

structures. Before demolition can begin, the following actions should be considered
(The building sysfems integrated handbook 1982):

-

All services such as power, water, gas, etc., need to be disconnected.
Storm water and sewer drains will need to be sealed as well.

Adjoining properties may be needed to be protected. The site must be fenced or suitably barricade to prevent public access during demolition process.

Kondokwi

1.4 Services

As dictated by Council's policies and regulations, the council requires a temporary electrical sub-station and toilet facilities to be established on site prior to construction; the services to be established on site include water, electricity, stormwater, sewage and gas. lf there are no or insufficient services on sites, they extending permission

from the council and relevant authorities will be required (Emmitt 1999).
1.4 Other Controls 1.4.1 Security: The need for security on site is very important. A hoarding will also need to be established and remain for the entire construction period. 1.4.2 Sediment Control: Also, the builder may have to use a combination of swatting, hay bales, and sedimentation fencing on a slopping block to stop earth falling onto road or into drains and waterways. 1.4.3 Set out of dwelling: The builder and or the Surveyor pegs out the dwelling

footprint from the drawings. They start at a boundary corner, peg a corner of the building, then lay a string line to identify the perimeter of construction.

2.0 Floor Construction 2.1 Footings
Typically, the type of footings to be use in new home construction will be suggested by the home designer with consultation with a geo-technical consultant

(Emmitt 1995). Emmitt (1995) stated that the factors that influence footings are as follows: -

Weight of building Wall construction type and height; Soil type Slope of the block

Kondokwi

-

Budget; Drainage requirements of the block.

Obviously, there are five main types of footings: Strip footings

Concrete pad footings
Pole constructed (Posts & Concrete)

Grout injected piles Timber piles ln this report however, I will limit my discussion to strip footings. According to a building expert, a strip footing is defined as a relatively small strip of concrete placed into a trench and reinforced with steel. The footing supports the exterior walls and

any interior wall that is load bearing or supports a slab such as for a bed room. Strip footings can be used for both traditional timber and concrete floors. John Wyse, a Building Expert affirmed that strip footings are one of the most common footings used in Australia.

2.2 Concrete Slabs As indicated by Emmitt (1999), there are two main types of ground slabs raft or ground slab and suspended slab. I will limit my discussion to raft of ground slab in my report.

Kondokwi

Emmitt (1999)"emphasized that the steel reinforced raft slab is the simplest and most

common slab construction available; in each:

-

Trenches about 450mm wide x 450mm deep are dug around the perimeter of external walls and under load bearing walls.

Reinforcement cages are laid in the trenches and reinforcement bars are also laid at this time, and turned up to pass above the top of the strip footing to

accommodate later slab structure.

-

Ready mixed concrete is poured into the trench to ground level with vertical

reinforcement bars protruding up to be formed with the floor slab.
Moisture protection, termites protection, electrical conduit, drainage and

sewage pipes for bathrooms and kitchens are positioned.
Form work for the slab is then erected along the outer edges of the building

foot print and on top of the cured concrete footings. Steel reinforcement is laid for the slab. Concrete is poured in one operation creating a slab that covers the entire floor area.

3.0 Wall framing 3.1 Once the floor structure is in place, the wallwalls are erected directly on top of

the chipboard or slab. The walls served as load bearing support for the roof and provide space for openings such as doors and windows, and they enclose the house and seal lt from weather (Elinwa & Joshua 2001). Walls comprise of either a structural frame or cladding or solid masonry.

-

3.2 Timber or Steel pre-fabricated Frame

Timber or steel prefabricated frame is the most common type of the house wall

framing. Steel is more termite resistant than timber; however, timber is more forgiving and accommodates alterations more easily. Timber framing can be prefabricated for termite prevention however; the chemicals do weakens with time. This type of framing is usually pre-made to order. lt consists of.

Plates (horizontal top and bottom members) Studs (vertical members between the plates) t2

Kondokwi

-

Noggins (additional horizontal members between studs) Galvanized strap bracing is added diagonally to brace the frame and stop racking

Openings in wall frames require a timber, steel or height weight aluminium overhead bar called lintel. Steel frames and load bearing brick walls, although termite resistant,

do not accommodate changes easily. Post and beam can be steel or timber; if is used when building elements are to be exposed. Post and beam construction is

assembled on site and is in-filled with a timber frame.

Understanding Green Building Construction in Singapore

...Understanding Green Building Construction in Singapore Abstract: Given the pressing environmental issues that is plaguing the world in the 21st century coupled with the global changing of the climate each day, Green Building Construction is starting to be more recognized among counties. Most countries around the world are looking more towards sustainable development in the long term. Such is the case of Singapore as it established various schemes and initiatives to address the environmental degradation problems that it is facing at the moment. In this paper, I will be elaborating the approach that has been undertaken by the Singapore Government in its efforts to developing Green and sustainable buildings in Singapore. From up to date, the initiatives were quite successful but there are still certain limitations which will be addressed at the later part. No doubt that Singapore has enjoyed some success in the area of Green Construction, it will still be imperative for Singapore to continuously improve itself and maintain its success should it want to keep its competitive advantage internationally in the long run. Now They Are Gone

...clouds covered the sky, scraps of buildings flying and the terrifying screeching and crying of the crowd is how many remember September 11th, 2001. The city that was full of life, lights and people changed in an instant. September eleventh was a chaotic event that changed the views of not only our country, but the world as well. What seemed like a normal day in my life was actually a life changing event two thousand eight hundred miles away. I was in the fifth grade when terrorists crashed a plane into the twin towers. I lived in a decently small city in San Diego, California. I had never been to New York, but I always wanted to go. I got up and got dressed for school then walked to school. My teacher’s name was Mrs. Brady, and she was a cheerful and outgoing teacher, but on this morning she was unusually somber and seemed nervous. I remember her on the phone for the first few minutes of class. The principal spoke over the intercom “Students, we are releasing everyone early to go home.” I was happy. My father did not have work, so I went to his house. The news was on every channel and I just wanted to watch a “kid show” I kept telling my father. When my mother got off of work, my parents sat me down to talk. “Why don’t I have school today?” I asked. “The school felt it was best for everyone to be home because there has been an attack on the largest building in New York City.” They replied. “What do you mean?” not fully understanding them. “People from another country...

Biblical Integration

...Is Science in the Bible? The need to answer this very question has come about all too often throughout time. It has at times driven a wedge between men because in order to gain knowledge and understanding of the truths of the world, Science deems it necessary to prove the truths by presenting the facts through a systematic process. The Bible on the other hand is presented to man by God and offers knowledge of the truths of the world through having faith and building a relationship with Him, which brings forth the knowledge needed to understand the world. In fact many times being a Christian can mean it must be impossible to be a scientist at the same time. But what many people do not understand is that Christianity and science are quite compatible. It has also been said that Science and Scripture are in no way at odds with each other but rather two distinct ways of thinking. On one hand are the believers of creation whom take the Bible as the only truth needed to understand the world. While on the other hand stands the evolutionist who seeks to explain and understand the truths of the world created by a God that cannot be seen or touched. For many years man has worked diligently to explain and prove the phenomena of the universe. This field of study as we know it is called Science. In today’s world Science can best be described as a systematic method used by scientists to prove the phenomena of the universe through observations, measurements, testing and documented...

Seven Habbits of Highly Effective People

...provide an approach to the development of personal and interpersonal effectiveness. Part 1 The first three habits focus on transitioning from dependence to independence, the mastery of self. Each of us begins life as an infant. We are completely dependent upon others to care for us. “They gradually, over the ensuing months and years, we become more independent- physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially-until eventually we can essentially take care of ourselves, becoming inner-directed and self-reliant”, (Covey 57), it is in our nature to transition to independence. Wikipedia.org summarizes The 7 Habits in correlation to each phase, beginning with self-mastery. Habit 1: Be Proactive describes how to take initiative in life by understanding how our decisions are determining factors for effectiveness in your life. Covey encourages us to take responsibility for our choices and accept the consequences that come with those choices. Key Points

...Key points A clear regard for history, an honest understanding of where we are today, and having the intellectual curiosity as we look to the future will be key to one’s ability to be an effective leader. These are the key points that I gleaned from the readings that were assigned to me. As a student of history and political science, I am always impressed when an author can help us understand where we are today, by giving us a clear understanding that much of what we will see in the future has at least some basis from the past. This is not to say that we will be in an endless cycle of repeated patterns, but that we will for the most part see traces of the past as our future unfolds. I was particularly impressed with the way Devereaux described the 75 year cycle and how we are now in the midst of the final 25 years of what she describes as the badlands. It is true that the majority of the transformational change that we encounter typically happens at the end of a cycle just as we transition into a new era. In my opinion, sound decision making should be made with an understanding of history as it relates to the question at hand. Thomas Friedman’s words give us an understanding of history, but he also talks about how we can learn from the successes and failures of America’s decisions during the last 50 years. He paints a vision for us to look to as we sit on a precipice where we as a nation clearly have a choice to make. Do we continue to act ‘as dumb as we wanna be’...

Secular Literature - Reason to Study

...The lessons presented this week were informative and interesting. Choosing only one reason to study secular literature is difficult to do, but, I have chosen to expand on the indication that literature helps us to understand human behavior.  I chose this area because as I am reading books and other material, I am building the visual picture of what, how, and why the characters act or react as they do.  And sometimes I am surprised that the way I envisioned the outcome is completely different than what is actually written. When reading about the way that circumstance causes a certain reaction I think we are able to broaden our ability to relate to the differences among people in our society.  If we only apply our own experiences and cultural background to everyone around us we are almost certain to judge and interpret reactions or behaviors incorrectly.  By having a broader understanding that circumstances and reactions differ among people of different ages, cultures and even in people within our own families and same cultures we can better communicate and appreciate people as a whole.  It may not always be that we agree with their reaction, but, we can certainly understand why the reaction may or may not be like our own. Lesson three indicates that when we are studying literature that we should consider the motivation, intention or plausible reasons that the characters react as they do.  By doing this with multiple circumstances and different outcomes, we can reason that...

Change Management

...organization will diminish. When developing strategies for change, there are two possible change models that business leaders can use. Two change management models that can assist in keeping an organization alive are Kurt Lewin and John Kotter’s model for change. Psychologist Kurt Lewin developed a change management model that consisted of three steps. The three-stage processes are: unfreezing, changing, and freezing. In the unfreezing state, Lewin understood that people are afraid of change because they feel safe in their no changing environment, therefore, resist change. The unfreezing state is the stage of motivating people to want and understand that there is a need for change. The first stage helps followers “thaw” and become understanding through motivation (Prentice Hall, 2012). After the unfreezing stage, the changing stage is put into action. People begin to do things differently in this stage. They begin to see why and how the changes benefit them. Time and communication is an important part in the change environment because people need time to understand the changes and they need to be motivated in order to feel like they are a part of the change (Prentice Hall, 2012). When the changes are taken into consideration and are being embraced in the working environment, the company freezes again. The company freezes because the staff has adapted to the change and is now following the new guidelines comfortably (Prentice Hall, 2012). It is important at this stage that...
