Understanding Iconography

In the world of art, there are four roles of an artist. They can use their artwork to help us see the world in new and innovative ways. An artist can also use their artwork to create a visual record of their specific time and place. Another role of an artist is to make functional objects and structures more pleasurable by imbuing them with beauty and meaning. Finally the fourth role of an artist is to give form to the immaterial ideas and feelings.
The first piece of artwork I chose is a piece created by Christo and Jeanne-Claude called “The Gates”. This artwork is beautiful and amazingly done. It is a great example of how an artist can use their artwork to help us see the world in new and innovative ways. Christo and Jeanne-Claude used their artwork to bring two different cultures together in one place for all to see. The artwork made Central Park even more beautiful and for those who were lucky enough to see this artwork, it is something they will never forget. I like the idea of using real objects to create art. Most people think art is simply drawn or painted and they don't realize that art can be so much more than just something on paper or on a wall. Using objects to create art is so interesting and creative.
The second piece of artwork I chose is Claude Monet's “Gare Saint Lazare. Monet takes the

role of an artist who is creating a visual record of their time and place. The particular place in this

artwork is Paris. In this painting, Monet shows a more modern Paris with both the good and bad that

modern changes can cause. Monet adds more railroads to show a bigger and better more up to date

industry. At the same time he shows how more railroads can cause more pollution and can be bad for

the atmosphere. This piece of artwork really shows how Monet feels personally about what changes

can be both good and bad for Paris. Monet also makes it seem real and can make those who view his

artwork look at Paris in a way that they may never have before.

Environmentalism in Manga and Anime

...Environmentalism in Manga and Anime  In Western news stories, Japan and the environment usually only come up together in one form: Japan is ruining the environment. Japan is hunting endangered whales; Japan is overfishing depleted fishing stocks; Japan has walled up the last of its wild rivers; Japan is building up all its wild areas.  All these accusations are, unfortunately, true to some large degree. Even in anime, all too often what we see are images that point to a continuation of the current trend: metal and concrete mega-cities, like those in the anime Dominion, Akira, Gunnm, or in Bubblegum Crisis, or any of the other hard science-fiction worlds. Not a pleasant picture --- and in fact, in those "cyberpunk"-ish stories, the world is not a pleasant place to be in, in general.  But, running through other works is a thread of a different hue. Listen closely, and a different voice is heard --- the voice of dissent, the voice protesting the loss of green spaces and clean waters and open air.  Where has this voice come from? I'm not quite qualified to say for sure, but I can guess. Some of it is obvious: people who are tired of seeing tranquil forests razed, or seeing their favorite beach turned into a concrete nightmare (such as in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan); people who read the news and hear of oil spills and extinctions and pollution problems. But another aspect is surely the traditional sense of Taoism that runs deep in Japanese culture. Taoism was the primary...

From Best to Worst

...Tapan, Elaine Joyce C. Tapan 1 English 10 March 17, 2015 From Best to Worst Fairy Tail is an on-going Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiro Mashima. The story revolves around the adventures of a magic guild named Fairy Tail—one of the foremost magic guilds in the land of Fiore. This is a shounen manga (aimed at a young male audience) and has several other genres such as action, adventure, comedy and fantasy. It has been published in Weekly Shounen Magazine since August 2, 2006. The volumes are released by Kodansha since December 15, 2006 and at present it has already 47 volumes. It also has an anime adaptation which started broadcasting in TV Tokyo on October 12, 2009. Fairy Tail is considered one of the mainstream manga and anime nowadays. It even has a Filipino dubbed version. (Fairy Tail Wiki) Although it is loved by many manga and anime enthusiast, there are several flaws I noticed when I read and watched it. These bothering flaws made me stop anticipating its weekly update. Years ago, this was my most favorite of all. But not anymore. Fairy Tail is one of the worst anime I have ever known. How was I able to have a hundred and eighty degree turn? There are three main reasons why. Reason number one: The animation and illustration have been inconsistent. The manga did not retain its old illustration. In the first few chapters, characters appeared more mature because of the sharp lines and pointed shapes. At present, their appearances changed into Tapan...

Ab Otaku Sciences

...With the advent of the internet and the opening of most national borders in the twentieth century, it comes as no surprise that much of mankind has already mixed and mingled with each other, drawing inspiration and fascination from each other’s cultures, customs and traditions. Whatever it is that a country takes pride in, be it architecture, cinema, cuisine, dance, embroidery, history, music, pottery, religion, sports, science, technology, theatre and so on, it is already celebrated by other countries as well, including our own. Enter the rich culture and history of Japan. You could read for hours on the wonders of Japanese performing arts or the depressing effects of the atomic bomb on the youth and the country as a whole and you’d still be left with so much more to explore: calligraphy, enka, origami, clothing, social hierarchies, etc. There’s so much about the country to fall in love with. Those who have are called otaku. The term refers to those with an obsessive or above-average interest in Japanese culture but most especially in the country’s anime and manga. Naturally, those in our country, and even in our campus have fallen in love with Japan, so much so that the practice of that love has become a culture in itself, otaku culture, if you will. Students of the Ateneo are wont to talk about their favorite anime and manga and display quite prominently how they love that small island country with events, clubs, gathering...

The Hunger Games

...3/27/12 English 90 The hunger games In the book by Suzanne Collins “The Hunger Games”, Katniss goes on to achieve atonement because she was “at-one” with her new self and life. In her journey Rue, one of the tributes that became Katniss’ ally, was killed. Katniss had to absorb the changes caused by the journey and she was fully reborn, after Rue’s death. This made Katniss balance herself by understanding, accepting, and realizing what she had to do. I believe this made katniss a hero because of the atonement. First of all, Katniss starts to understand what Haymitch wanted all along. In this quote, “one kiss equals one pot of broth.”(p.261) Katniss realizes that Haymitch wanted her to give the audience more. She had to show romance between herself and Peeta. This made her more powerful in a way because she just had to kiss Peeta and show romance. Then she would receive a gift. Katniss understood what Haymitch wanted her to do. Second of all, Katniss starts to trust and she starts to accept Peeta. In this quote “This is the first kiss where I actually feel stirring inside my chest” (p.298) and she realizes that she wants another kiss. This means that she is starting to accept Peeta in a romantic way. In this other quote, “No one has held me like this in such a long time.” (p.299) she feels like she is beginning to trust him because no one had ever held her like that in a...

Professionla Roles and Values

...As a nurse one runs into some very saddening/ maddening situations, some that cause not only the individual nurse, but the entire nursing staff to be thrown into conflict with their beliefs of non-maleficense and a patient’s right to autonomy. I always strive to never cause any harm to a patient and treat them kindly despite behaviors that could lead one to not want to act or treat someone is such a manner. Additionally I believe an individual should also have the right and be supported in making decisions about their healthcare, but when the decision is in effect, taken away from them, who has that right? When the nurse and stand staff struggle with the decision that is being made, it complicates the picture, leads to a lot of frustration and nurses feel helpless Several years ago there was an incident of a pt that received a kidney transplant, but during the immediate post operative course the patient, suffered a respiratory arrest, was anoxic for a period of time leaving the pt with anoxic brain damage. Biblical Integration

...Is Science in the Bible? The need to answer this very question has come about all too often throughout time. It has at times driven a wedge between men because in order to gain knowledge and understanding of the truths of the world, Science deems it necessary to prove the truths by presenting the facts through a systematic process. The Bible on the other hand is presented to man by God and offers knowledge of the truths of the world through having faith and building a relationship with Him, which brings forth the knowledge needed to understand the world. In fact many times being a Christian can mean it must be impossible to be a scientist at the same time. But what many people do not understand is that Christianity and science are quite compatible. It has also been said that Science and Scripture are in no way at odds with each other but rather two distinct ways of thinking. On one hand are the believers of creation whom take the Bible as the only truth needed to understand the world. While on the other hand stands the evolutionist who seeks to explain and understand the truths of the world created by a God that cannot be seen or touched. For many years man has worked diligently to explain and prove the phenomena of the universe. This field of study as we know it is called Science. In today’s world Science can best be described as a systematic method used by scientists to prove the phenomena of the universe through observations, measurements, testing and documented...

Joe Salatino Case Study

...Discuss why Joe’s employees need to understand the importance of how people form perceptions and make attributions. I think is because the Joe's employees may be more effective by building relationships of trust with customers. Joe could do an analysis of the organizational culture of his own company with them. Anonymously or directly he could ask their employees what is the perception they have about the Company. After that ask what in their opinion may have generated this perception In this discussion could be approached the way the company does business with its customers. It is an ethical way? We are looking for to meet the customers’ needs and their expectations or we aim solely the benefit of the Company? How the customer sees us? What did we to bring this customer perception towards us? Although it is more difficult to talk openly about the internal environment of the Company, Joe must find ways to understand the internal view that employees have about the Company. Do you feel part of the organization? Yours remarks are heard? How do you assess the degree of autonomy or freedom that exists in your department? What kind of attitudes or standards that the Company has that contribute to this vision that you have on it? Do you feel that the perception you created came from your departament or came from the Company as a whole? He will also give his opinion on if the brain is a so-called meat machine, and giving different examples of metaphors that prefer to the function of the human brain. I also will be explaining how Victor Frankl would answer the question, “What does it mean to be human?” The author will give his definition of what it means to be a human, while describing what metaphors Victor Frankl used to communicate his ideas. He will also be discussing the different difficulties of addressing certain characteristics and whether the characteristics are limited to humans. When it comes to metaphors and the roles they play in helping people understand artificial intelligence, they are significant to people who need a demonstration or idea of what’s going on. Artificial intelligence is basically computer created to perform human like activities, so describing a situation such as cars, machine made will make the definition of it more understandable to some. After reading and defining different terms to help me understand the situation, I have come to the conclusion that the brain is a meat-machine because it controls the body and it daily functions. That is similar to a machine because it is set to perform daily tasks to perform a certain goal. ...Employees are constantly exposed to a variety of information. They know when leaders are being phony. This information is processed in a person’s, mind and organized to form concepts pertaining to what is sensed or experienced. Different people often perceive a situation differently, both in terms of what they selectively perceive and how they organize and interpret what is perceived, by the employee and their manger (Hellriegel and Slocum, 2011. Pp. 104). The attributions that employees and managers make concerning the causes of behavior are important for understanding behavior. For example, a leader who attributes poor performance directly to his subordinates tends to behave more punitively than does a leader who attributes poor performance to circumstances beyond his subordinates’ control. A manager who believes that an employee failed to perform a task correctly because he lacked proper training might be understanding and give the employee better instructions or more...
