When a P2P is connected it allows you to search for files on other peoples computers, while at the same time allows other users on the network to access yours that are typically assigned onto a single folder that you have designated to share. One of the main upsides to a p2p network is that it does not need an expensive server as each individual computer acts as one. The user sets their own privacy settings as to which files are accessible to others.
