Unit 19 Assignment 1 TEAM TYPES – drag and drop worksheet
Describe different types of teams and the benefits of teams for an organisation (P1).

Part (a) - Drag the appropriate 6 terms above that describe the team types we have discussed into the boxes below:
Part (b) - Drag the definition and benefit descriptions below to the appropriate team type listed in your table. Part (c) - Provide an example of how each team type benefitted (or could benefit) your team during the balloon chair activity. Use the space provided in the table for your answers. TEAM TYPE | DEFINITION/BENEFITS | EXAMPLE | 1. | Temporary teams are hired for specific time or tasks, which would allow the business to alternate teams depending on the business needs. Due to this, the team will be focused on the task they have been set up to do. At the end of the project, the company wouldn’t need to fire the team members as they know their contract is ended at the end of the project. If the business is recruiting, creating temporary teams to do induction tasks would allow the business to analyse employees before hiring them. | Being part of temporary team to do the balloon chair would be a good as the task would get boring as the team would have to constantly perform the task on a daily basis. This could make the team more motivated to perform the task to the best of their abilities as they know they have been selected to do the task. | 2. | By building up a permanent team, the business would save themselves money on both training and salaries as they will already have a capable well-skilled team set up to complete tasks which means they wouldn’t have to re-train staff on the business’s aims and objectives and paying extra fees for the temporary staff. Being part of a permanent team gives the team stability as they know they have a secure job. Also, being part of a permanent team could make the employees more efficient as they are familiar with team members and the processes of the company. | A permanent team would also be able to perform this task well as they would be well established as they would have already previously worked on other tasks together. Therefore, giving them some normality and stability, this in turn could make the team more focused on the task at hand as they already know the skills of the team. | 3. | Being a formal team, means the team has a formal structure where roles are clearly defined and have an automatic system on how projects are tackled, this means the team can run smoothly. Additionally, when a project is set, the work will automatically get divided which means there is a much less chance of sections being overlapped as the team leader will co-ordinate activities. Formal teams usually start with established objects to achieve depending on the team they are e.g. marketing department. Also, they have more emphasis on the task. | Being part of a formal team whilst performing the balloon chair task would have allowed a structure to build in the team (if not already built), especially if this was the first time the team has performed together. By building a structure, the team would have a clear aim and objectives for each aspect of the chair (design, structure, finished product) this would keep the team focused on their primary objective in order to not let down the team. By establishing a leader in the team, each team player could know who they could talk to if an issue happened. Overall, a formal team would use a project like this for an ice breaker as a formal team would usually be used for a more demanding task. | 4. | Informal teams can communicate faster as there is no set structure on how to communicate with higher authority e.g. team member having to speak to supervisor before being able to speak to a manager. Also, there is more of an emphasis on the social needs of team members rather than the work, which would be good for those with children or other pirioties. | Due to the nature of this task, it would be ideal for the team to be informal as this project is itself informal. Therefore, allows teams to have fun and socialised whilst it is being performed. Since a structure wouldn’t have to be made, every team member can have their views on each aspect of the product from design to finished product. This could give team members confidence as they know their view will not be dismissed. | 5. | Small teams can be more focus on the jobs as their roles within the group and what the employees their expectations are. Smaller teams usually more cohesion when working together as they have more chance to know each other. | When doing the balloon chair activity, being in a smaller group helped everyone to have an input, however, some team members didn’t input as much as others. Also, having five people in the team meant we could allocate roles more easily, this meant everyone knew what they were doing. Overall, the team worked effectively. | 6. | Large teams can generate more ideas when working on projects as there is more people engaging. Also, having more working together will make the work load less as there are more people working on different sectors of the task; this in turn will make the task get completed quicker. If the team is well selected, there should be skill-specific people so tasks can be handled effectively. | Having a large team to complete the balloon chair exercise could be beneficial as there could be a wider range of skills available from the team members, for example, designer/builder to design and construct the chair. However, due to the size of the team versus the size of the project, it could make the project overcrowded which could delay the time the project gets completed in. |

...leadership and organizational change within a unit of a larger organization. As such it provides an important learning experience for students who are already managers or who aspire to that level of responsibility. The primary learning opportunities address building a vision at the unit level, restructuring for success, overcoming resistance to change internally and across other units of a larger corporation, building support with powerful sponsors, and the importance of communication and persistence where authority is limited. The case has a difficulty level appropriate for undergraduate seniors and graduate students, and is designed for courses addressing organizational change, leading change, and leading teams. It can be covered in a one hour class. Preparation for the case is expected to require 3-4 hours. CASE SYNOPSIS The case begins with the recognition by a senior vice-president that the inadequacies of a seemingly insignificant compliance unit could jeopardize the overall growth strategy of BOKF, a large regional bank holding company. Paula Bryant-Ellis agrees to take on the transformation of the CRA department into a modern Community Development Banking Group (CDBG) that will contribute to the overall strategy of BOKF, the parent banking company. The case covers the first two years of significant organizational change, with emphasis on creating a vision, restructuring the organization, and shared leadership at the unit level. For the first three months, Bryant-Ellis...
