Answer DQ1:

1. One important challenge during planning and designing a solution is how and when to

implement the object-oriented concepts like inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction etc.

In order to make the code reusable, scalable and user-friendly good design is very important.

The structure of the code decides the future maintainability, hence code design and structure

should adhere to best practices.

2. Second challenge is to make sure the code compiles and runs correctly and has no technical

errors. It is also important that complete functionality be covered.

Syntactical errors are very common, but are easy to catch hold of and rectify, but logical errors

are difficult to identify.

It is essential to read the requirement

...computer It estimates that it will take competitors at least two yeas to produce equivalent products. The demand function for the computer has been estimated to be P = 2,500 - .0005Q The marginal (and average variable) cost of producing the computer is $900. a. Compute the profit-maximizing price and output levels assuming Pear acts as a monopolist for its product. Answer: The monopolist would equate marginal revenue (MR) with marginal cost (MC) Total revenue (TR) = P*Q = 2500Q-Q^2 MR = dTR/dQ = 2500-2Q We have MC = 900 So MR= MC implies 2500-2Q= 900, implies monopoly output Q* = 800 (in units of 100) And monopoly price P = 2500-0.0005*800 = 2499.6 b. Determine the total contribution to profits and fixed costs from the solution generated in part (a). Answer: Total profit = P*Q-MC*Q = 800*2499.6 900*800 = $ 1279680 (in units of 100) Pear Computer is considering an alternative pricing strategy of sliding down the demand curve. ...BACHELOR OF COMMERCE (B.COM.,) PAPER – 2.1 MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS UNIT – I CHAPTER - I SECTION - I Definition of Managerial Economics Managerial economics refers to those aspects of economics and its tools of analysis most relevant to the firm’s decision-making process. According to MeNair and Meriam, managerial economies consists of the use of economic models of thought to analyze business situations. Some writers consider managerial economics as the integration of economic theory with business practice for the purpose of facilitating decision-making and forward planning by management. The underlying idea of all these definitions is that managerial economics means economics applied in decision-making. So we may consider managerial economics as a special branch of economics bridging the gap between abstract theory and managerial practice. It may be pointed out here that effective decision-making at the firms’ level calls for a careful analysis of a choice between alternative courses of action. Economic theory offers a variety of concepts and analytical tools which can be of considerable assistance to the manager in his decision-making process. In fact actual problem-solving may require many skills and tools which are not available in the traditional economist’s. For example, knowledge of accounting and of statistical concepts and methods, which are not taught in economics, can help the analyses to apply more effectively the economic...

Inaccurate accounting Financial reporting failures begin with inaccurate reporting at the preparation level itself. Be it deliberate or unknowing, the firms’ failure to prepare financial statements accurately is putting stability and future of the financial world in jeopardy (Bhattacharya, 2006). Grant Thornton’s analysis of the financial statements of 49 law companies belonging to the UK market has revealed that 20 percent of these companies have such accounting policies that conflict with the treatment of figures in the profit and loss account and balance sheet, while a further 10% are unclear because of inadequate narratives, according to a new report released on 22 November 2010 (Grant Thornton...

Demand and Supply

...Demand and Supply: The Basics 21 FUNDAMENTALS OF ECONOMICS FOR BUSINESS - (Second Edition) © World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd. http://www.worldscibooks.com/economics/6794.html Chapter 2 Introduction The most basic, and in many ways the most lasting, lesson to be learnt from “Economics 101” relates to the fundamental concepts of demand and supply and their interaction. These are usually presented in a simple graphical format involving demand and supply “curves”. The word is in quotes because in this chapter, for simplicity, we will actually assume only straightline relationships between price and quantities demanded and supplied. The main issue that is important in reality is the direction of the relationship between prices and quantities. Will a reduction in price lead to an increase in the quantity demanded of any particular product or service? Will an increase in price lead to an increase in supply? And so on. The principal technical tools for analyzing demand and supply conditions in particular markets, then, are the demand and supply schedules or curves. The demand curve shows an estimate or conjecture about the relationship between the price of any particular product or service and the quantity of that product that will be demanded by consumers. It is usually assumed to slope downward, in the general case, for most products and services. In other words, the lower the price of the item, the greater the quantity of it that will be demanded. Technically, this...

...Chapter 9 Monopoly As you will recall from intermediate micro, monopoly is the situation where there is a single seller of a good. Because of this, it has the power to set both the price and quantity of the good that will be sold. We begin our study of monopoly by considering the price that the monopolist should charge.1 9.1 Simple Monopoly Pricing The object of the firm is to maximize profit. However, the price that the monopolist charges affects the quantity it sells. The relationship between the quantity sold and the price charged is governed by the (aggregate) demand curve q (p). Note, in order to focus on the relationship between q and p, we suppress the wealth arguments in the aggregate demand function. We can thus state the monopolist’s problem as follows: max pq (p) − c (q (p)) . p Note, however, that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the price charged and the quantity the monopolist sells. Thus we can rewrite the problem in terms of quantity sold instead of the price charged. Let p (q) be the inverse demand function. That is, p (q (p)) = p. The firm’s profit maximization problem can then be written as max p (q) q − c (q) . q It turns out that it is usually easier to look at the problem in terms of setting quantity and letting price be determined by the market. For this reason, we will use the quantity-setting approach. 1 References: Tirole, Chapter 1; MWG, Chapter 12; Bulow, “Durable-Goods Monopolists,” JPE 90(2) 314-332. 233 Nolan...

In the third part of the course we will take the “demand” schedule from the consumption analysis and the “supply” schedule from the production analysis and put them together in a market. The price, and the quantity exchanged will be determined in the market. We will also discuss the performance and efficiency of markets. A. CONSUMPTION ANALYSIS UNDER CERTAINTY 1. Goods are products or services that consumers or businesses desire. Examples: a book, a telephone call, insurance coverage. Goods may be directly desired by consumers or may contribute to the production of other goods that are desired by consumers. Discussion Questions

...WK 1 DQ 1 What does the expression “media literacy” mean to you? Do you consider yourself to be media-literate? Why or why not? What benefits, if any, would you expect to gain from being media-literate? On the other hand, if you were media-illiterate, might that be a disadvantage for you? How so? Media literacy to me means to be aware and knowledgeable in different types of media and to be able to communicate within those media. This would include the use and application of all forms of media and anything relating to it. I consider myself pretty media literate, because I know how to communicate and send messages through most media. I am an avid internet user so therefore can use any forms the internet has to offer in order to communicate. This would include social networking , instant messaging and of course e mailing. I’m a big social network user especially Twitter, where like every other social networking site you can communicate with people all over the world. For me the benefits of being media literate are that I am more educated an able to use classes such as this one. My being on the internet so often has allowed me to take online courses to whereas someone who isn’t, would have a much harder time in an online class. I would say a disadvantage of being media-illiterate would be being cut off from people who you would otherwise communicate with on a regular basis. For those who have family in the military, being media literate allows them to keep in touch...
