PORT EXPANDER In this research paper I will give a brief description along with an in-depth understanding of port expanders. For starters, it’s best to have some sort of mental picture of what a port expander actually looks like. Take for example, an external hard drive that has a USB 2.0 male port cord coming from it, now remove the external hard drive end from the cord and replace it with a 4-in-1 USB 2.0 female port end. What you’re left with in the end is a cord similar to Fig. 1-1 located in the index section of this paper. So as you can see, instead of having a device on the other end, a port expander would have several female USB 2.0 ports. These female ports allow for other devices to be plugged in all while utilizing one USB 2.0 computer port. Which proves to be convenient when having to work with several external devices and a computer with only one port. Another advantage of port expanders is that, not only are they made for specific brands of computers, but generically made as well. These generically made port expanders allow for a universal fit for all computers. The downside is that for one, port expanders are dividing the bandwidth/data from that computer port into however many devices connected to it. Unfortunately this in turn is reducing the overall speed and performance of your computer.

Port Expander

...Port Expander A port expander essentially allows one to become two. What I mean by that is it allows more than one device to connect to a single port. Expanders are equivalent to splitters or extension cords in everyday life. They are usually inside the computer on the motherboard, with the only visible part of it being the extension plate showing multiple ports. Some example of the type of ports that we’ve covered and that I’m familiar with are: Ethernet Port Firewire Port Serial Port VGA Port Audio/Video Ports SATA Port DVI Port USB Port DB-25 Port Microphone Port Port expanders are pretty generic, meaning that they’re compatible for almost any PC. There is not a specific expander made for the numerous number of computer brands on the market today. The advantages and disadvantages sort of go together when talking about port expanders. They do allow you to connect more devices at one time but it also slows those devices down. Depending if the port has a 3GBps or 6GBps, all the devices had to share that speed, rather than being used individually and using all of the particular speed for one device. In most cases, buying port expanders are more convenient than trying to find a computer that comes with that many ports for a decent price. The only true downside you could run into would be the amount of power you have available on your computer. There are only so many ports you can use at one time before you overload your computer. Once it overloads...

There are two forms of port expanders: internal and external. An internal expander has a connection inside the computer, typically on the motherboard and the only part the user sees is the expansion plate that contains multiple ports. As for an external device, it plugs into the existing port and then has multiple places to connect. The most common versions are used for USB and Ethernet ports. There are numerous types of ports that have available port expanders for them. Here is a list that I have compiled: * Ethernet port expander * Firewire port expander * DB-25 port expander * Serial port expander * USB port expander * VGA port expander * DVI port expander * SCSI port expander * Audio port expander * Video port expander * Microphone port expander * RS-422 port expander * Modbus serial port expander * SATA port expander * SAS port expander * SSD port expander Port expanders are generic devices that can be used with any computer as long as the computer has the port for which you are trying to use and expander for. Now pretty much every computer from PC to MAC has all the same ports on them. It used to be that MAC was the only one using Firewire, but then it became available on the PCs...

Port expander are hardware device designed to allow a user to utilize more than one device on a single port at one time. It’s able to connect several devices to one serial port, for example connecting mouse, and keyboard when you only have one USB slot to use, you would use a port expander to fix this problem. There are several different types of port available for expander hardware, but to list a few we have USB, Ethernet, Audio, SAS, VGA, Microphone, DVI, and Video ports.( see pictures below). Port expanders are made generic so it’s compatible with most computers if not all, as long as the computer has the ports for which you are trying to expand for. With anything there are always disadvantages, and advantages. Disadvantages to port expanders are that whenever you have it fully connected it takes away performance from all devices since they all share the same bandwidth. Example if you have a 6GBps port expander which can connect up to 8 devices, when all connected creates a traffic jam making the performance slow creating a bottle neck effect. Also most are external, requires a lot of power, for this reason you possibly overload/ruin the power supply, or PC may not start till all is disconnected. Advantages to port expanders are that it...

...Unit 4 Research Paper 1 : Port Expander A port expander is a device that allows one port on a computer system to connect to multiple devices. There are two basic types of port expander: internal and external. The internal expander has a connection inside the computer, typically on the motherboard. The external device plugs into the existing port and then has multiple places to connect. When not a part of the computer system, these devices are commonly referred to as splitters. For example, the device may allow seven devices to connect to one serial port. Types of ports available on the expander hardware Ethernet port expander, FireWire port expander, DB-25 port expander, Serial port expander, USB port expander, VGA port expander, DVI port expander, SCSI port expander, Audio port expander, Video port expander, Microphone port expander, RS-422 port expander, Modbus serial port expander, SATA port expander, SAS port expander, SSD port expander There are no specific types of ports for different computers in technology today. That being said, all the computers from PC to Mac have all the same ports so one type of port expander should connect to that specific port on any type of computer. Port expanders offer the advantage of allowing more devices of a particular port type to be utilized at the same time. The downside or disadvantage to this is that all those devices will share the output for that single port that the expander was connected to. For example, a 3 Gbps port...

Port Expander

...Port Expander I had never heard of a port expander before this class, but after much looking, I’ve found out what a port expander is and what it does. “ A port expander is a hardware device designed to allow a user to utilize more than one device on a single port at one time. For example, the device may allow seven devices to connect to one serial port.”(Computer Hope, 2016) It still didn’t make much sense to me, even after reading about it. As I went along finding more information, the more sense it made. What I found about this item is that additional ports receive and send data into a parallel format, which means it needs to be converted to a serial format. I found on the internet sixteen different port expanders, those would be SCSI port expander, audio port expander, VGS port expander, SATA port expander, Ethernet port expander, Modus Serial port expander, SSD port expander, SAS port expander, DB-25 port expander, USB port expander, VDI port expander, Microphone port expander, Video port expander, and Serial port expander (termpaperwarehouse, 2016). As far as if the port expanders are made for specific types of computers, what I’ve found are mixed answers online for this one. So for my own conclusion, I’m going to say they are generally basic, but doesn’t mean it will work with all computers, because a port expander doesn’t actually introduce any new hardware, just introduces a connection. It seems there are advantages and disadvantages to using a port expander...

Port Expanders

...Arcacia Godfrey 1/19/15 Unit 4 Assignment 1 Port Expanders A Port Expander is a computer hardware that allows more than one device to connect to a single port on a computer. The commodore VIC-20 used a port expander to allow more than one cartridge to be connected to the single ROM cartridge. There are fourteen different types of port available on the expander hardware. * DB-25 Port Expander * Fire wire Port Expander * Serial Port Expander * USB Port Expander * VGA Port Expander * DVI Port Expander * SCSI Port Expander * Audio Port Expander * Video Port Expander * Microphone Port Expander * RS-422 Port Expander * Modbus Port Expander * SATA Port Expander * SAS Port Expander * SSD Port Expander Port Expanders will work for almost any P.C, specific expanders are not made for different PC’s as they are all the same. The advantages of using port expanders are that you can use more ports. SAS port expanders takes a single port and makes many out of them. A single 6GBps port can be expanded so you can connect up to 8 different devices. The Disadvantages of using this are if you used all 8 ports of the 6GBps each device shared this throughout slowing all devices connected this would create a bottleneck effect of all the data and information running through the single port. They are mostly external and require a large power supply creating a strain for a stock supply designed for a specific work load as well as the...

...Aaron Boggs NT1110 Mr. Greene Unit 4 Research Paper 1: Port Expanders With such a wide variety of port expanders it is easier to say that pretty much every port is expandable. There are big port expanders that require racks to be put in, small ones that look like toys, some will let you use more than one monitor and others that can be expanded over a hundred times. I will take about a couple of these ports that have surprised me with their ability. One of the things I have learned is about the USB port expanders. The computer can have up to 127 USB ports. Not only can they do that but you can get all types of expanders for cheap. You can get one that holds four more ports and also looks like a doll or other toys from a small car to skateboards. You can also get one that more grown up that is just a regular black case, and with the ability to link so many together they are a great tool. No to mention that the speed of a USB port can be real fast and their popularity makes them easy and cheap to get. SCSI can be expanded also this is called a Daisy Chain. The amount you expand depends on the type of SCSI you use. Even though more and more of the hardware used today uses newer technology like the USB and wireless networks this technology the SCSI is still a useful tool in the IT world. Wireless routers are an amazing port expander. You can have your printer, game consuls, tablet, laptop and home computer all connected with wireless technology. These are not the...

Port Expanders

...Gause 4/22/13 Unit 4 research paper: Port Expander “A port expander is a hardware device designed to utilize more than one device on a single port at one time.” In layman’s terms, this can also be called a “splitter.” There are many different types of port expanders, but they can be narrowed down to two major groups; internal, and external. They are generic devices that will function no matter where they’re installed. Internal port expanders attach to your motherboard, and the user will only see the back plate. From a hardware standpoint, there is no difference in the type of computer. If the card fits, it will work. The first image in the appendix is an example of a port expander. External port expanders are not attached to the motherboard. They plug into a slot on the computer, and allow multiple devices to attach to that slot. The second image in the appendix is an example of an external port expander. One of the biggest advantages to using a port splitter is during multitasking. For example, most user interface devices are USB devices, mice, keyboards, printers, and even cell phone chargers can all be plugged into a USB slot. Therefore, the more ports you have, the more peripheral attachments you can use. On the other hand, with so many devices plugged into a single port the power source could get overwhelmed. Without the proper safety measures, an overloaded power source could “burn out” and cease functioning. Appendix Image 1: Internal Port Expander Image...

...Jason Haas Research paper 1 Mr. Smith unit 4 a printed circuit board containing the principal components of a computer or other device, with connectors into which other circuit boards can be slotted. A bus is the path through which a device sends its data so that it can communicate with the CPU and or other devices. There are traditionally three different types of buses found on a mother board which are the front side bus (F.S.B) which can be explained as being the interface between the cpu & motherboard, Specifically the north bridge/ memory controller hub.  The second bus typically found is called a Intel GTL which can be explained as the single connection to the north bridge shared between all cpu`s. The third most typical bus found in a motherboard is DDR-SDRAM (Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory). This upcoming replacement for SDRAM is basically the same product, but it operates twice per clock cycle. DDR-SDRAM is only about 10 to 20 percent more expensive than traditional SDRAM and provides better performance than single-channel RDRAM. A port expander can be any device to which one existing or onboard port becomes two or more, An advantage to this is the ability to allow more devices of a particular port. The internal expander has a connection inside the computer typically on the motherboard. An external device plugs into the existing port and then has multiple places to connect. When not part of a computer system, these...
