Reflection Paper #1: United Nations
Field: Humanitarian Assistance
Issue: Epidemic Disease

Ebola in West Africa The United Nations (UN) was created in 1945 following the Second World War to prevent another global war from happening. Nonetheless, the organization is more than just a global peacekeeper; out of its many other roles, the UN also offers/provides humanitarian assistances to those whose lives are threatened by natural and man-made disasters. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) was, therefore, formed in 1991 and placed under the UN Secretariat to coordinate responses to emergencies (OCHA , n.d.). OCHA manages its task through the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC), a primary mechanism for inter-agency coordination relating to humanitarian assistance. IASC has four main UN entities, including UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Food Programme (WFP), as crucial aid …show more content…

Course objectives: International institutions have come to play an increasingly important role in global politics in the last century. Arguably the most prominent of these institutions is the United Nations (UN). Established in 1945 and in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, the UN’s Charter set out the rights and obligations of Member States, and pledged to: “save succeeding generations from the scourges of war”; “reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights”; promote “respect for the obligations arising from treaties”; and “promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom”. A brief review of the state of the international system 70 years later, however, has led many to conclude that the UN is incapable of realizing its Charter ideals, and that the organization itself, and the very promise of global governance, is irrelevant. Indeed, challenges in peace and security, development and human rights...

Schlesinger, whose original name is Arthur Bancroft Schlesinger was born on October 17th in Columbus, Ohio, and died February 28th, 2007, in New York. He had graduated from Harvard University in 1938, and in 1940, Schlesinger was appointed a three fellowship at Harvard. This is derived from the society of fellows at Harvard University which gave Schlesinger the opportunity in the early stages of his scholarly career to pursue studies in any department, free from any formal requirement. This opportunity was only given to individuals who display exceptional ability, originality, resourcefulness, and academic achievement of the highest caliber. Unfortunately for Arthur, this opportunity was interrupted once the United States had made its entry into World War 2. When he failed his physical military examination he was appointed to the Office of War Information department, in which he served as an intelligence analyst from 1943 to 1945. In 1952 and 1956 he became a presidential speech writer to democratic presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson the second. He had also served as an assistant and Court historian to President Kennedy from 1961 to 1963. He had also supported the presidential campaign for Kennedy which had ended when he was assassinated in Los Angeles. Arthur eventually returned to his teaching career in 1996 as a professor...

Veterans Having Trouble Finding Jobs After the Military

... skill and mind set for the transition from military to civilian life, provided by the government and employers to ensure employability after serving their country regardless of how many years of service one has served. Veterans lack the special training and skills that are necessary to compete with the civilian population. Veterans often have jobs that cannot transfer to the civilian world (Hefling, 2011). For instance if they are an infantryman, they cannot get a job as a mechanic. Even as a Diesel Mechanic, it is hard to find work in the civilian sector. The military uses different equipment than the civilian sector. Many veterans do not take advantage of the benefits that are given to them while they are on active duty. Reflection: Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down

...Reflection Paper 1 Reflection Paper Reflection Paper 2 Overall Impression of Book: I feel that Anne Fadiman narrated the story of Lia Lee’s and her family’s life in intimate and tragic detail. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is a poignant depiction of the struggle between loving parents, hard-working medical professionals, and a very precious child caught in the middle of a tug-of-war. Ms. Fadiman very distinctly illustrates how the collision of two cultures indirectly led to the demise of a little seven- year old girl. I did not expect the story to end with Lia Lee in a persistent vegetative state. I was very excited when I first started the book, but I soon became rather depressed with the lack of compassion of people towards the Hmong in general throughout the book. I am not certain whether I am now more culturally aware now, but I was very frustrated by the lack of respect given to the Hmong by the people in the city of Merced and the doctors and nurses comments about the Lees. Three Major Themes Evident in the Book: A: Cultural Understanding An important thread running throughout this book is cultural understanding. Americans, including the medical professionals in Merced and Valley Children’s Hospital are depicted as very insensitive to the ways of the Hmong people. Anne Fadiman, while acutely aware of the physicians’ frustrations in providing medical care for those individuals with very radically...

Southwest Case Study

...provides scheduled air transportation in the United States. Primarily, the company offers passengers low-fare, point-to-point air transport services in 72 cities in 37 states all throughout America (MarketLine, 2012). Southwest is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, and has about 45,392 employees as of FY2011. For FY2011, the company generated revenues of $15.658 billion, increasing by 29.4% over FY2010 (MarketLine, 2012). Southwest reported net profit of $178 million in FY2011. It must be noted that the airline industry is famed for its cut-throat competitiveness. However, since its inception in 1971, Southwest has been able to steadily rise to the top of airline rankings due to its Low Cost Leadership strategy (Muduli & Kaura, 2011); Box & Byus, 2009). Southwest also consistently offers on-time arrival that, combined with low-priced fares, makes it highly favorable for passengers. Southwest is able to achieve its strategy by using a linear, point-to-point network and does not have an airport hub (Tierney & Kuby, 2008). As a result, the company’s aircraft are seldom idle while its competitors spend prolonged idle time while passengers switch planes at the hub (Tierney & Kuby, 2008). Because of the impact of this strategy on passengers and the industry as a whole, competitors tend to cut fares whenever there is possibility that Southwest will be entering a market so that they can still retain their market share (Goolsbee & Syverson, 2008). This paper discusses the current situation of Southwest...

Luke uses the Greek word “ethnos” for the word nation. God has always had the heart for diversity because it reflects His nature. God is mono-theistic, but He is triune in function. Consequently, the church should be one body but diverse in expression as the body of Christ. Each ethnicity has diversity of gifts that can enhanced a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic church for...

...Canada--------------------------------------------10 American –Canadian economic relations --------------------------------------------------11 Conclusion--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------12 First World War and Canada-US Relations Introduction The First World War or the Great War was a remarkable event in the history of the humanity. It influenced and shaped our modern world to an extent like none else, and the reflections of today’s development traces its route back to the decisions taken during and post-World War I. No one had any idea about the huge armies that would be involved, the amount of ammunition that will be expended, and how many people would die. However, the role of Canada in the war is noteworthy, considering the fact that the nation decided to stand by the Britain’s side during the war with the only aim of opposing aggression. It neither fought for anything for itself, nor did it receive any rewards of the war. In this paper, we will discuss about the role of Canada and US in the Great War, the history of the border regions along the Canada-US boundary during the war and how it impacted their relations. It will examine the development of cross-border economies and the cultures in these regions before the war and explores how the war, specially the...

...to business is called Gentura. They are well established biotechnology company. This company has over 25 years experienced into their business. This paper will highlight the many situations or challenges an organization faces while conduction business abroad. Other items that will be highlighted in this paper are: the issues involved in resolving legal disputes in international transactions. Also some practical considerations of taking legal action against a foreign business partner based in another country. Last, it will highlight how companies should resolve domestic and international issues differently. There are some issues that arise during resolving legal disputes in international transactions. The first issue to consider is the laws that govern the country. If the country is run by a borderline dictator such as President Arahi Gwendoz that took over Candore in a bloodless coup, the rule might be very difficult to understand. If there are no rules such the Constitution of the United States, there will be a lot of room for a variety of interpretations. Last, “International law has traditionally been defined in very broad terms and not limited simply to rules that are applied to settle disputes in court. Rather, international law is influenced by a combination of law, religious tenets, and diplomatic relations between nations” (Melvin, 2011, p. 632).This room for interpretation for an ambiguous law will be a hindrance to a speedy resolution. The second issues are the disputes...

...Dekada 70 : Reaction Paper The movie “Dekada 70” was a reflection of the Philippine situation way back the said decade and there were various cases with regards to human rights violations. The oppressive administration of the then president marked tremendous ordeals to people borne the said time. Some of the most notable human rights violations that I have observed while watching the film was the oppression of the lead actress in the person of Ms. Vilma Santos. She was confined in the limitations of her home and for caring for her husband and children. She was forbidden to have a career of her own and was most of the time disregarded when she aired out reflections of her own opinion on things. Another thing that caught my attention was the strict adherence to marriage. Men seemed to think that time that they were God’s gift to women and by so saying, it showed how little women’s voice are given importance when talking about their consent on whether or not they want to be married. It was also an open knowledge to us who were not even borne during the said decade that the freedom of speech was not all free. Many of the press were forbidden to freely write and broadcast about the situation faced during the then administration. Education was also manipulated and many people had to keep themselves on their toes. The student activists and the street rallies were so brutal and many feared for their lives or for the lives of their loved...
