Reading Strategies Worksheet

Identify two reading goals, one short-term and one long-term.

• Long-term reading goal: • Short-term reading goal:

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions:

• How do you currently approach the weekly readings in the course?

The way I currently approach the weekly readings is by looking over my discussion questions and reviewing my assignment, first. I than attempt to read my chapters but I find myself skimming through it before I actually read it. When it is time for me to do my discussion questions, I normally read over the text a few times to make sure I understand what I am reading and answering. In order for me to get the full effect of my reading I need to be in a place with minimal to no noise. This is how I currently approach my reading.

• How might you incorporate three of the suggestions covered this week into your study time?

The way that I might incorporate three suggestions into my study time is by starting with reading goal, making sure I review things in the text to better comprehend what I am reading. Using flashcards is a good suggestion, by studying them it will help to comprehend better. Finding a good study location that does not have much noise and is comfortable without use of the cell phone is a suggestion I would incorporate, due to my cell phone being a huge distraction. These are the things that I will try to incorporate into my reading, with the understanding that it takes practice.

• How might this plan help you accomplish your reading goals?

Universal Approach Case Study

...What this approach dose ultimately seeks to do away with vital domains of difference or cultural difference. Differences which emerge from and through being socialized within the framework of a particular group. The aim of the Universal approach is to enable the psychotherapist and counselor to overlook and not to be effected by difference. This domination influences the counseling process. The advantage of the universal approach is that it reminds us that humans have many characteristic and attributes in common and that all people are unique as individuals. The Universal approach argues that any human difference can be considered cultural. Margolis and Rungta (1986) shared with other Universalist the position that “ the psychological consequences of being ‘ different’ are common across special populations, regardless of whether individual are members of an ethnic minority, homosexual or disabled” Margolis&...

Signs of Danger

...Melanie Garcia English 015 5 September 2013 Signs of Danger Everyday I pace back and forth on the hard pavement on the edge of the pool with my red tube. Hot sun beaming down on my already burnt skin and tried faces scanning the water. All I look forward to on these summer days is lunch break and free swim time. I know I am safe if anything happens today, I’m a lifeguard, I’m trained to respond to life-threatening situations. Blow a long whistle really loud, point at the person in distress, and press the Emergency Stop button. I’m okay. I kept pacing back and forth doing my job, watching over people’s lives. On this afternoon I encountered a situation that will forever be imprinted in my memory. I remember vividly seeing a body on the mid-surface of the water, sinking. Looking at the body I waited for it to come back up or at least show me some signs of helplessness. Nothing. And I counted “One. Two. Three.” I blew on my whistle, pointed at the body, and went to hit the Emergency Stop button. I jumped right in and my heart was pounding. “Why isn’t he moving or struggling?” “Was this going to be my first unconscious body?” “...Please let them be okay” I thought to myself. As I was getting closer to the body I saw it keep sinking. The worst thoughts came into my mind. When I was right on top of it I left my red lifeguarding tube on the surface and dove straight under, grabbed the heavy man with both my arms, going under his armpits and pushed off the bottom of the pool...

Note Taking

...▪ Effective note taking is one of the keys to succeeding in school. Students should devote a considerable amount of time reviewing information discussed during classroom lectures. It is very difficult remembering specific details from classroom lectures without good notes. These note taking strategies will help you to take better notes: ▪ Make clear and accurate notes Make sure to take legible and accurate notes since it is not uncommon to forget key details discussed in class after it has ended. Frequently, students comprehend the teacher's lecture, so they'll neglect to jot down specific details only to forget them later. Students who keep accurate notes can review them later to fully grasp key concepts during personal study time. Additionally, since during classroom lectures teachers frequently cover many topics, effective notes enable students to concentrate on specific topics. ▪ Come to class prepared Students properly prepared for class usually take better notes. Proper preparation includes completing assigned reading prior to class and reviewing notes from previous lectures. Students who do this can ask questions about confusing concepts and be prepared for new topics. ▪ Compare your notes To ensure your notes are as accurate and detailed as possible, compare them with the notes of other students after class is over. This is useful because your colleagues will frequently write down lecture details that you forgot or missed. This strategy...

Flipped Classroom Model

...The idea of the “flipped classroom” is for a professor to basically put there lectures online for students to watch, and during regular class time they actually work on homework and assignments from the lectures that the students watched online. I think the flipped classroom is a good idea, because I know from personal experience sitting and listening to a lecture in class gets boring after awhile and people tend to not care or listen to what is actually going on. Then the professors wonder why so many students aren’t doing well in the class, and the reason probably is because they are bored and don’t feel like sitting for 50 minutes or an hour and a half listening to a teacher just talk. I actually wouldn’t mind the flipped classroom model because I am one of those students that will get bored sitting in class listening to a teacher talk, especially if it’s a class that I don’t find interesting, like history. It would be good to do interactive things in class so that we don’t have to hear a teacher talk for an hour. The only down side to this would be that some students aren’t going to watch the online lectures. I know for sure I wouldn’t sit at a computer for an hour and listen or watch a lecture. If teachers chose to do this they should at least make their lectures somewhat interactive even online or at least do it in parts so a student isn’t sitting there bored for an hour. I wouldn’t mind for some of my professors to take part in the flipped classroom model, it’s something...

How does a discourse community help establish common ground for its members? A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about those goals. I belong to several discourse communities of which I don’t know how to label them. It helps to establish common ground for its members by having resources and peers interested in and sharing in your same beliefs and ideals and having peers to converse with to learn and research subject matter than you all enjoy and share interest in. 5. Liberty and Justice for All

...* Liberty and Justice for All GEN/195 August 28, 2012 * I seem to use my reasoning skills (rationality) to determine what processes and systems should be put into place to assure fairness and justice for all the community (equality). Using reasoning skills and justice thoroughly explains why my personal preferred lens is the relationship lens. I seek to have relationships with others, especially the underprivileged. Great relationships are built while helping others who sometimes do not have the ability or resources to help themselves. * * My blind spot is overconfidence in a process. There is truth in this because I do overly trust in the “process”; the process of fairness. I do not like seeing or hearing of anyone being treated unfairly and it bothers me to find out that not everyone has what I consider to be valuable morals. Also, to find out that someone less fortunate or inadequate according to America’s standards (i.e.-financially, physically, or a minority) isn’t being treated fairly literally makes me angry on the inside. This ultimately causes me to fight harder for the process’s sake-fairness and equality for all; especially the underprivileged. * * It is comforting to know that my strength is justice. Seeking justice in the overall community is very important to me because it ensures that if everyone is all right in the community, they too will be more willing to reach out a helping hand as well. When the question is asked, “Am...

Noam Chomsky's Universal Grammar

...INTRODUCTION Based on the discussion of the validity of Noam Chomsky’s perception of Universal Grammar (UG), some past & current researches which maintain & contest Chomsky’s UG from different areas are represented. The essay focuses on: 1) Chomsky’s Universal Grammar in brief, in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) context; 2) Evidences supporting Chomsky’s UG - views offered by linguists such as Williams and White, etc, to provide arguments to support UG pertaining to first language acquisition and second language acquisition; 3) Evidences refuting Chomsky’s UG - according to Piaget and Haspelmath, etc, based on the insufficient assumption of SLA and also biological evolutions; 4) UG and language teaching; 5) and in the conclusion, I shall add my two-cent worth of perspective as a language teacher. 1) Chomsky’s Universal Grammar in Brief Universal Grammar is the brainchild of Noam Chomsky, adopting the cognitive approach. Human beings have implicit knowledge of grammar but may not be able to explain how they get this ability. This is because they have no conscious awareness of the processes involved. 1) Universal grammar is a theory of knowledge: It is mainly concern with the internal structure of the human mind, suggesting that the speaker knows a set of principles that apply to all languages, and parameters that vary from one language to...

"The Wrestler" Analyzation

...Raheem Nubin March 27, 2014 Film and Pop Culture Studies Dr. Michael Walonen The Wrestler According to makeindependentfilms.com an independent film that’s funds are less than half from one of the big six major film studios; such as MGM and UA, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures/Touchstone Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios. Independent films are uniquely created by the film’s creator and usually has much less of a budget than a major motion film. In my opinion an Indie film show cases the creator’s creativity with their own signature editorial style and direction in the movie. The Wrestler is an independent film follows the life of Randy “The Ram” Robinson a well-known retired wrestler who is urged to continue living his glory days of his wrestling career. Now a retired pro-wrestler who now works part-time as a wrestler on weekends and supermarket attendant who despite has heart problems and far past his prime still wants to wrestle despite his physical condition. The film references to labor in 21st century in America is represented by Robin not wanting to do the common man job (Working the 9-5) but living the commercialized American dream as a pro-wrestler. In addition to his rematch with “The Ayatollah” he injects himself with steroids to increase his training, and that is common in America. Despite his near death heart attack Randy still stops at nothing, after rescheduling his match with his opponent after Cassidy does tells...

Learning vs. Acquisition

...of sense to differentiate between learning and acquisition, as Krashen does, claiming that acquisition happens subconsciously and we produce language by the knowledge we gain; whereas learning is a conscious process entailing realizing “rules” and being able to talk about them. This differentiation reminds us of the two major types of cognitive knowledge: Procedural Knowledge and Declarative Knowledge, to which Krashen never connects his hypothesis, claiming that acquisition is guided by Universal Grammar through the Language Acquisition Device and that learning can never be turned into acquisition in a formal setting. He also thinks that the learned knowledge acts as a filter or a monitor on the acquired knowledge which is responsible for production, but he does not account for this monitor in comprehension in both L1 and L2 settings. Supporting these claims, Krashen studied the order of morpheme acquisition to assume that language is acquired in a predictable order controlled by the Universal Grammar, but he ended up noticing differences and variations in the order. The last two hypotheses of Krashen, which mainly account for second language learning, are the Input and the Affective Filter Hypotheses. People acquire second languages only if they obtain comprehensible input (i + 1) and if their affective filters are low enough to allow the input ‘in’. Though (i) is not definable for each learner and the nature of the filter’s function is unknown, this claim still makes a whole...

Infant’s Behavior and Language Development

...INTRODUCTION Language is the expression of common shared concepts or culture, it provides us with the linguistic categories and terms to express and evaluate the world around us, describe our emotions and formulate our ideas. The extent of language's influence on our lives helps us in our live, relationships, and other activities. Language is not just a set of words and grammatical rules, but rather extends it to non-verbal communication and the concepts and shared ideas as expressed in a particular language. It is believed that language is among the signs of Allah’s wisdom. Allah has created men in different tribes and nations with different colors and language as Allah stated in Surat Al-Hujurat (49:13) “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.” The uniqueness of language has sparked the linguist to investigate the origin of language until present. Some researchers believe with the ideas that human acquired language naturally. Many ideas have come out to prove the origin of language. One of the famous theories that explained the origin of language is Divine Source Theory. Proponents of this theory believe that language came from a divine source. In general, this theory explained that human acquired language through a divine source or god as the first language because many...
