The video “University of the Arts Commencement 2012” incorporates many ideas that I, and many college students alike also have. Coming into college, I had no clue what I wanted to achieve or what was in store for me. Sure enough, three days into college, I am still unsure on a major and unsure on a potential career. Just like Gaiman, one of my biggest fears is going to work everyday and hating every minute between 9 and 5. I am terrified that I will pick a major that will be wrong and end up with a job I hate or a degree that I don't use. I want a career/degree tailored to the exact specification that I need for my ideal job. Gaiman talks about someone coming to his door in a shirt and tie with a clipboard telling him he has to enter the real world and get a different job. He was afraid of falling into a rut, like many college students who are undecided. The last thing I enjoyed in his speech, is his reassurance that you don’t need a clearcut path to a certain career or your dream job. Gaiman shares how, on many occasions, he had lied about his previous jobs and experience in order to get hired. He points out that sometimes people get a job and aren’t the most qualified, but they simply got the job because they got it. Although it is smartest to plan ahead for a career as much as possible, sometimes opportunity falls in your lap. I’ve learned first hand that when it does, pick it up and run with it. In the article “Major Decisions” Burtchaell speaks first hand on how he and those around him had a sense of gratitude and debt to their parents for providing them with opportunity and education. I am, without a doubt, thankful for the opportunity my parents have given me, and like Burtchaell, I feel a sense of debt while choosing my career. We all want to become successful in order to show our parents the return on their investment and to

Convocation

...day. The graduation itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation. In case of study and education graduation is the meaning of getting a higher degree of three years after 10+2 from a university or college, but that degree must come under the degree of graduation. Quite apart from that though, the graduation ceremony fulfills an essential human function as a ritual of transition, in this case marking the move from student to worker. The whole idea of graduation is believed to have started in the 12th Century, introduced by scholastic monks who wore robes during the entire graduation ceremony. It has kept on evolving ever since. Gill, L. (2012, January 15). Convocation and its importance. Graduation. Retrieved August 7, 2012. Scholars, especially anthropologists, consider graduation to be a rite of passage. A rite of passage is a ritual that marks a change from one stage of life to the next in a person’s life. The pomp and ceremony of the graduation ceremony can lend itself to accusations of irrelevance and elitism. Such criticisms I think miss the point. The occasion certainly wasn't irrelevant to the students and families who attended on the day. In fact it was laden with meaning. Many had shown remarkable fortitude in seeing through their studies often in the face of competing personal, family and financial circumstances. In a number of cases the students were the first in their families to have attended university. For...

In 1980, under the administration of Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC, the CDP was opened as a night school for working professionals. By 1985, the CDP became the Community College. The College began its move towards autonomy when it was renamed De La Salle University-College of Saint Benilde in 1988, moved to its own campus at 2544 Taft Avenue, Manila, and became a member institution of the De La Salle University System. By 1993, the College started conducting its own admissions processes and in 1997, it held its first commencement exercises independent of DLSU-Manila. In 1998, the College officially...

...susceptible to traumatic events and stress (Langan-fox and Cooper, 2011). Externalisation of stressful behaviours as a result of being exposed to traumatic events such as severe neglect, abuse and repeated violence is clinically termed as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2013). It has been maintained that PTSD creates psychological and physical imbalances in sufferers; and affects their physical and mental well-being negatively (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2013). From this standpoint, it can be argued that PSTD equally has the potential to affect the well-beings of university students and their academic performances. However, Hall (2005) maintains that besides traumatic events and the resulting PSTD, university students particularly possess unique set of stressors which negatively impact on their everyday experiences in university and affect their academic performances...

Nt1310 Unit 1 Assignment

...I recall my older sister complaining to my mother that I had better grades than my siblings because I was at a lower grade level. The exact statement was “wait until she starts [enter grade level here].” As I advanced from elementary school, middle school, and, ultimately, high school my performance never faltered. When I arrived to 10th grade, the pace of the education system was not satisfying my thirst for knowledge. I became aware of an early college program located at the University of Texas at Brownsville, known as the Mathematics and Science Academy (MSA). I immediately set to do everything in my power to qualify for the program. MSA only accepts 45 applicants of over 100 applicants across south Rio Grande Valley. After months of preparation—which consisted of taking the SAT, requesting four letters of recommendation, writing an essay, and an interview with the director of the program—I was selected to become a participant of MSA. My commencement at MSA began the journey of my academic future. MSA was created to provide students the opportunity to complete...
