Personal Learning Management As course assignments, assigned reading, assigned and interest-based research, and other learning activities are completed, the learner may recognize the economic value of what has been learned. Knowledge gained through learning can be forgotten if concepts are not reviewed on a regular basis. It is possible to design an application to record high economic value learning tasks and insights that will allow for periodic review. This application will help solve the issue of knowledge being forgotten by allowing the information and concepts to be kept in front of the individual for regular review. The application that must be programmed will be a simple user friendly app that will allow the user to see and record progress over a given class which will give the user the ability to not only see what has been done but to have it brought back to the forefront of what they already went over in course assignments, reading and researches for a particular class. So in essence the program will help each student record each task and can, ever so many days allow the student to review what they covered and done to keep the information fresh. The information that we will be recording is assignments for the course, any assigned reading for the course, research both assigned and interest-based, and other learning activities. By getting this information from the user the program will store this information and recall it to the user on a time and scheduled output as well as show what still needs to be done in the course.

...Running head: UNIX vs. MS vs. MAC 1 CIS-155 Final - UNIX vs. MS vs. MAC UNIX vs. MS vs. MAC 2 Abstract This paper will explore the history of UNIX, Microsoft (MS), and Macintosh (MAC) operating systems. Not only will I discuss the history of these systems, but I will also dive into the pros and cons of each. The benefits of each over its rivals will also be discussed. Keywords: open source, UNIX, Windows, UNIX vs. MS vs. MAC 3 The topic of what operating system is best has been a long and heated one. But, in the long run, UNIX will beat its rivals in most categories hands down. As the reader will see throughout this paper, undisputed evidence will be presented that will detail exactly how UNIX based operating systems are superior. Operating systems (OS‘s) are a means for users to communicate with the computer. Each OS provides a set of commands for directing the operation of the computer. Without these operating systems to help as interfaces, each user would have to learn the command syntax, which can be very difficult. These operating systems can be menu-driven, which provides a set of menus and lets users choose desired functions from then, or they can be icon-driven, known as a graphical user interface (GUI). GUIs are very common these days and with them, users can choose an icon, usually with a mouse, to activate...

...process that occurs when you press the power button to turn your computer on. There are three types of operating systems which are: MAC OS, WINDOWS AND LINUX. MAC OS Mac OS is the proprietary operating system used by apple for their Macintosh computers originally called systems. Before, the operating system could be run only on Macintosh computers that had Motorola processors. Mac OS was introduced to apple in 2002 and is not compatible with PC hardware. MAC is credited with making the graphical user interface. MAC OS uses control panels to configure, troubleshoot, and maintain the computer. Windows and Linux do not run in Macintosh. LINUX Linux is an open-source operating system modeled on UNIX. Linux was originally written by Linus Torvalds and can be freely downloaded by anyone. They are usually run on PC, gaming consoles, dvrs, mobile phones, and many other devices. Linux was originally designed as an alternative operating system to windows. It is also free to download under GPL (general public license). The Linux operating system represented a $25 billion ecosystem in 2008. Since its inception in 1991, Linux has grown to become a force in computing, powering everything from the New York Stock Exchange to mobile phones to supercomputers to consumer devices. Linux users have the option of using one of a few GUIs that are similar to the Mac OS GUI. The two most popular GUI environments are GNOME and KDE. GNOME stands...

...to start when trying to understand the basics of any computer hardware system would the operating system. Operating systems are a program which manages the computer’s hardware. These systems provide a basis for application programs and intermediate between the computer’s user and its hardware. There are many different types of Operating serves that are available to use. There are four main Operating systems that are used in today’s Technological world: UNIX, Linux, Mac, and Windows. Each one of these systems has its own unique aspects to offer users, while still sharing the same basics that an operating system needs. Memory Management UNIX/Linux In comparison to other operating systems, UNIX is quite different when it comes to managing its memory. It uses extremely sophisticated memory management algorithms to make the best use of memory resources. Though UNIX and Linux are extremely similar when it comes to how things work internally, there are slight differences that make UNIX distinct. One process that UNIX uses is Swapping; this is done by moving chunks of the Virtual Memory, known as pages, out of the main memory and moving others in. In order for this process to work at its best, those pages that are needed must be accessible in the Main Memory at the demand of the CPU. When a page is expected to be needed in the very near future it is called a resident set. This can lead to errors due to memory allocation issues. If the CPU attempts to access a page that...

...interface that allow them to communicate directions in order to perform specified task on a computer. The operating systems help the above process by managing the hardware functions, where it converts simple directions into detailed instructions, which the computer can interpret or understand. The operating system also manages the memory and processing tasks of the computer. This allows the user or users to store data and run more then one application at a time. Now, we’re going to discuss five differences among Windows, Linus, and Mac OS X operating systems. Windows is one of the most popular and well-known operating systems made by Microsoft. They say Window’s dominates the market and can be found in most businesses. Runner up to Windows is my favorite OS X operating system. This system is made by Apple and is based off of Unix. Then last but not least is Linux. Linux isn’t a single operating system but more of several distributions all based off of the original Unix system. Although a lot of people use these operating system, however they are very different. MAC is the property of apple products. It has been favorite by many graphic designers and artist. It is estimated that no more than ten percent use the apple operating system. Unlike the other systems this system can only be run on MAC devices such as computers, phones etc… Although Macintosh computers have Intel processors, they are not PCs. Likewise, the Mac OS is not compatible with PC hardware, and PC- based operating systems, such as Windows and Linux. The MAC uses graphic user interface that people manulipate with a mouse in keyboard. Unlike the other operating systems MAC is very expensive. Mac software is also used on phones unlike windows. MAC is charactized as user friendly. MAC uses its own web browser named safari. MAC is less likely to fail. Linux is an ever- expanding group of operating systems that are similar to UNIX in their design. They are meant to run on PCs, gaming consoles, DVRs, mobile phones, and many other devices. Linux was designed as an alternative operating system to Windows. It is estimated that no more than one or two percent of the U. S. population uses Linux on PCs. ...discussed. Comparisons to other retail OSs such as, Windows, Mac OS X, and prior versions of Linux will be used to show the strengths and weaknesses of this OS. “Linux was created by a student (Linus Torvalds) in Helsinki in 1991 with the assistance of developers from around the world. Linux is free, it shares its work with everyone — including competitors — and its business model is motivated primarily by adrenaline, altruism, and peer respect rather than by money. Yet, Linux's functionality, adaptability and robustness has made it the main alternative for proprietary operating systems, especially where budgets are a main concern.” (OEDB, 2007). As it is stated above Torvalds creation was a key proponent in creating the Open Source Movement, which has paved the way for the many distributions of the Linux Kernel. In the beginning Linus Torvalds was an IT student with the desire to test the limits of his current computer. During this time Torvalds was working with the MINIX OS which was create to be a cheap alternative to UNIX. Torvalds wanted to modify the kernel of MINIX and found that this was not possible so he began to create Linux. In the beginning Linux did not offer a lot of features and seemed to be lacking in ability (Diedrich, 2011). Torvalds made Linux 0.01 available to the public via an FTP server on September, 17, 1991. Linux 0.01 had a good reception among people who liked using MINIX or UNIX but found those OS’s to either to be too limited or too...

...usually executed directly by the hardware and frequently makes a system call to an OS function or be interrupted by it. Operating systems can be found on many devices that contain a computer—from cellular phones and video game consoles to supercomputers and web servers. Examples of popular modern operating systems include Android, BSD, iOS, Linux, OS X, QNX, Microsoft Windows, Windows Phone, and IBM z/OS.. History 1. Windows - The first Windows system was released in 1985. Originally, it was just a graphical user interface on top of MS-DOS – a state of affairs that lasted until the release of Windows 95, when MS-DOS products were integrated into Windows. Windows 95 was a huge departure from the previous systems and was the first major step in Window’s transition from GUI to operating system. 2. Apple - The Apple Macintosh system is a little older than Windows, having first been released in 1984. From the start, it was an entirely graphical operating system, and from quite an early stage became popular among the earliest computer graphic designers. In 2005, Apple changed the design and structure of Mac OS, moving from...

...Project 2 – Technological Innovations Nathan Brenner Westwood College 2014/05/09 SOCS-299 Abstract The open source software Linux, was introduced in 1991, by Linus Torvalds. He developed the UNIX based operating system because, the education oriented operating system he was working with was not meeting his needs. Linux has grown to be an innovative powerhouse, because Linux is so versatile it can be used in hundreds of applications and shows no signs of age or being outmoded. Technological Innovations The financial burden put on college students is staggering. However, there is one corner that can be cut when deciding what kind of operating system for your computer to purchase. Most people are mundane and choose whatever is pre-installed on the computer they are purchasing, but did you know there is an alternative? When you think of a computer operating system, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Windows? Apple? Did you know there was a third alternative? I am talking about the open source software known as Linux. What is Linux? The actual definition is “a freely-distributable open source operating system that runs on a number of hardware platforms” (webopedia, 2014). The technological advantage that the open source software Linux has given to the world is immense. This open source software has come a long way since its inception in the early 1990’s, and has grown to be the most versatile open source operating system to date. Along with its versatility...

The purpose of the operating system as defined in (dictionary.com) is the collection of software that directs a computer’s operations, controlling and scheduling the execution of other programs, managing storage, input/output, and communication resources. Its abbreviation is OS. Mac OS used by Apple on Macintosh computers is used by 10% of Americans. It uses a GUI (graphical user interface) that is run by a keyboard and mouse. But is not a PC and is not compatible with PC hardware. Previously, it ran on a Motorola processor but its successors run on an Intel platform. Mac OS is a favorite of graphic artist, musicians, and multi-media designers. It uses a point release system. It uses Safari and Mozilla Firefox for internet connection. Mac OS has a specialized version of the program developed for the iphone and ipod. Linux operating system is similar to Unix in design but is meant to be run on PC’s, gaming consoles, DVR’s, and mobile phones. 1 to 2 % of the U.S. population use Linux on personal computers. It was written by Linus Torvalds and can be freely downloaded by anyone. Several companies distribute their own versions of Linux called Ubuntu, SuSE, Red Hat, and Knoppix. ...Carlton Foster Operating Systems * Provide a brief history of three operating systems. The top three operating systems are; Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux. “Windows XP is the first Windows OS to allow multiple users to log on simultaneously to the OS, each with their own applications open. Although Windows XP was first released with some bugs, the second service pack (Service Pack 2) resolved most of these problems. XP underwent three service packs. It is an extremely stable OS and was popular in both the home and corporate markets” (Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC, Eighth Edition, Andrews, pg. 1116). This programs allows users to do many things that others might not allow like older versions of Windows. Windows Vista is the newest version of Windows. This program is not very popular with some people because there is a lack of compatibility with other programs, also it slows performance. “The first problem is partly caused by hardware manufacturers not providing Vista drivers for their devices that were originally sold with XP drivers. The second problem means that many low end desktop and laptop computers can’t run Vista. And the slow performance of Vista is partly due to the many unnecessary features (fluff) it offers; these features weigh heavy on system resources. Vista comes in five versions: Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. (Vista Starter is a sixth version available only to developing nations...
