Unpaid Internships Since recently being added as a requirement for many college degrees, internships have seen a huge increase in the number of participants. According to the research firm Intern Bridge, it is estimated that “undergraduates work in more than one million internships a year, an estimated half of which are unpaid”(Greenhouse). Unpaid internships have become a huge debate over the past couple years. There have been many cases in which interns have gone to court, suing their employer for not paying them throughout the internship. Such as the case for Eric Glatt and Alexander Footman, production interns for the movie “Black Swan,” who sued Fox Searchlight in September of 2011 according to the news article written by Steven Greenhouse for the New York Times. The judge in their case ruled that both should have been getting paid while participating in the internship, since both “were essentially regular employees.”(Greenhouse). Anya Kamenetz, an op-ed writer who also writes for the New York Times wrote an article titled “Take This Internship and Shove It,” explaining how society views unpaid internships as valuable and argues that we are viewing them all wrong. Kamenetz’s main claim in her article is that unpaid internships are bad for not only labor market but also for an individual’s careers. She argues this claim with two main arguments. First being opportunity costs such as an individual’s loss of wages and not to mention the living expenses on top of that. She goes on to say how there are even some internships you have to pay money for in order to participate. Her last argument is that “unpaid interns are like illegal immigrants”(192). This is because the unpaid interns are adding to the population of people who are willing to work for very cheap or nothing at all. Kamenetz’s conclusion is that although she disagrees with the idea of unpaid...

Exploiting Interns

...RUNNING HEAD: Unpaid Internships Exploiting Students: Harsh Reality of Unpaid Internships In the article “Jobs Few, Grads Flock to Unpaid Internships,” Stephen Greenhouse writes about the harsh reality of internships in the United States (2012). Greenhouse, the labor and workforce reporter for The New York Times, explains in his article the specific stories of unpaid interns and lawsuits filed against companies who did not compensate these individuals. The internship programs that Greenhouse reports on oppress both women and men with unfair work expectations and poor opportunities for advancement. With the help of this article and other supporting materials, I will clarify the relationship between these unpaid, exploited students and the material covered in my Women Studies class. In the article, Greenhouse points out that since 1985, the unemployment rate for graduates twenty-four years old and younger has risen 9.4 percent (Greenhouse, 2012). Speculators estimate that this number is increasing so rapidly because of students’ willingness to work for free in internship positions. The article explains this phenomenon stating that many students feel this is the best way to get a foot in the door with a possible future employer. More and more businesses are refusing to hire students who have not completed an internship program. However, Greenhouse explains that even after the completion of an interning program, many students are left uneducated about the type......

...Issue: 1 Article: 13 ISSN 1309-6249 THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMES IN AN ODL INSTITUTION: A CASE FOR THE ZIMBABWE OPEN UNIVERSITY Richard BUKALIYA Zimbabwe Open University, Mashonaland East Region, Marondera, ZIMBABWE ABSTRACT Several studies done elsewhere have indicated and concluded that a gap really exists between the quality of graduates produced and what the market demands (Mpairwe, 2010). For this and other reasons, training institutions and employers have accepted the need to seek mitigatory steps to bridge the gap. Among other steps, institutions of learning have introduced internship programmes also referred to as field attachment in some of their degree and non-degree programmes. There has also been the realisation that imparting the relevant practical skills is a partnership between the training institution and the prospective employers through student internships. However, despite these positive intentions, interns on field attachment have faced serious challenges among which are insufficient time and lack of funding for the programmes. It is behind this background that the present study sought to establish the benefits and challenges faced by student interns at the Zimbabwe Open University. The study focussed on two of the university`s faculties: the Faculty of Science and technology and that of Applied Social Sciences. Most of the students on internship were from these faculties. Being quantitative in nature, the study employed......

Business Ethics

...Bradshaw Ryan Andrews BA590, Grantham University Key Organizational Behavior Audrey Locke is a summer intern for a very successful North American company of Brussels and Bradshaw Investment Bank. As it seems in most organizations, the new guy, or girl in this case, is often subject to treatment that can be misunderstood as abusive. Those that are in positions within an organization see this as ‘weeding out the week’. From the view point of Audrey and other past interns, it can be seen as unnecessary and disheartening. For those that are intent on making a future in investments, it seems that you are going to have to learn how to adjust. In fact, Blake Cooper, one of the managing partners of the Toronto Office with Audrey is performing her internship at stated “We cannot afford to get soft on our people by listening to analysts whine and complain about each other. Once you start, where does it stop? They’ll figure out how to get along on their own if you let them. These are professionals. We are all here to make money and the only way to make money in this business is to work together. Those that want to get ahead will recognize that – and those are the people we want at Brussels and Bradshaw.” (Hitt, Miller, Colella, 2011) Issues and Recommendations It seems that this situation of being stepped on is not going to change. Since this seems to be a companywide pandemic, it is going to take a ton of pressure from the top and directive to stay on course to change the fact......

Application

...I am applying Business as my major degree this time. Since I am a very energetic and challenging-like person, learning and working in competitive environment are very appealing to me. The reason for applying business major is very simple. It is no doubt that I have huge passion towards business after I took many business-related courses. In addition, I had gotten more familiar with these kinds of stuff after I did some internship, which provided me a very good opportunity to build my confidence in pursuing business-related jobs after college. In particular, I feel interested in real estate, marketing, and finance areas. Not only I have been almost done all the courses in business major requirement, I am participating in JBS Real Estate Development this summer, which gives me a glimpse and affords me a substantial connection between the college and the work after college. Despite what many believe, business is not only about its glossy brochure, its fancy product, and its precise financial report. It extends to its employees, customers, the media and even the general public. Honestly, I am a kind of person who is eager to work with people, communicate with people and even negotiate with people. Last year, I declared Psychology as one of my major and almost done all requirements as so far. I certainly believe that Psychology and Business are a good combination in knowing how to work with people, and how to get into social networks well in the future. Besides my good......
