Human savagery is an act of cruelty or violence. People in my opinion are not born being a savage. Reason I think that is because, being a savage or a kind person depends on how your mind is influenced. In the texts coming up, I will be talking about how people are born being kind and some being mean/cruel. My text that I chose to write about is called Unwind, by Neal Shusterman. This book was mainly about three Unwinds trying to escape from being unwinded. In the first section you will be reading about the backgrounds of each character. The three main characters in the story are Connor, Risa, and Lev. Each of them have a different story about being an unwind. Based on an analysis of the book, Unwind, and corresponding research, humans are …show more content…
An example from Unwind that demonstrates the kindness humans are capable of is the scene where a old lady named Sonia, took both Connor and Risa in to protect them and make they have a safe place to hide from the unwinders. Before this scene happened, Connor and Risa was ratted out by a guy named Lev. This then caused them to be stuck in a school lock down. As a way to try to get out of the mess, they tried to hide. This plan failed. A teacher, by the name of Hannah, then catches them with a baby. Instead of calling the police, she chose to help them escape the big mess as well helping them get to a shelter. The person that said this quote was a old lady named, Sonia. “So, you’re Unwinds and you want my help, is that it?”-Sonia pg.95. This evidence that I’ve provided demonstrates that people are kind by that a old lady by the name of Sonia chose to keep them safe as well as make sure they have a shelter. The event demonstrates the effect I’ve identified in the topic sentence by that the lady helped them, not kill them or hurt them. A real-life example that demonstrates this same kind of kindness is when a football player named J.J Watt chose to help the people of Houston Texas after a tragic hurricane hit them. After Hurricane Harvey, it left a devastating remark on Houston and its people. In order to help the people of Houston bounce back, a NFL star by the name of …show more content…
An example from Unwind that demonstrates the kindness humans are capable of is the scene where Lev decides to not detonate the bomb, but to save connor. Before this scene happened, Lev and his friends decided to detonate a bomb using a clapping system. This caused two of the bombers (Levs friends) to die knowing what they’ve done. The person that is going to say the quote is Lev and it is about him saving Connor. “He takes off his shirt. Then he tears his shirt in half. He presses half the torn shirt to Connor’s face.(..) Then Lev takes the other half of his shirt and ties it around Connor’s arm. He ties it tight. That hurts too.” -Lev pg.312. This quote was said by Lev and it is about him rescuing Connor after the two clappers went off. This event demonstrates the effect I’ve identified in my topic sentence by that Lev chose to save Connor instead of clapping and detonating the bomb. A real-life example that demonstrates this same kind of kindness is when the people of Poconos chose to come together as a community to help others during a dangerous storm. This article that I read, was about the people of Poconos coming together as a community to help people that were affected by the storm. The quote was said by Chris Schoemaker and it is about him talking about helping the people. “It's one of the heaviest hit areas, and we appreciate everyone's patience.

Although I graduated from high school, I have a real problem with self confidence. Keeping up with my classmates from high school on social media sites, I became discouraged and depressed from seeing how successful some of them had become. I often wondered why I haven’t become successful. Why was I made to be a failure? Then it dawned on me that I, myself was my own problem. At different points in my life I’ve often given up when I was faced with a challenge. I always took interest in the healthcare field, and I pursued and completed a certification in nursing. When certain circumstances caused for me to have to go back to school to recertify, instead of pressing on I choose defeat. My greatest obstacles now are my children, for I don’t have a strong support system and because of this I have allowed myself to be defeated by other obstacles in life. When I got into college, my biggest challenge was staying focused and motivated. I continued to stay out late, I would put off assignments until the last minute, I did cram study sessions, I was lazy all the time and couldn’t concentrate, and I missed classes and fell behind on home assignments. This caused a major problem for me like receiving failing grades. I blamed everything and...

The 7 Habits

...The Writing Center Book Reviews Like 17 people like this. What this handout is about This handout will help you write a book review, a report or essay that offers a critical perspective on a text. It offers a process and suggests some strategies for writing book reviews. What is a review? A review is a critical evaluation of a text, event, object, or phenomenon. Reviews can consider books, articles, entire genres or fields of literature, architecture, art, fashion, restaurants, policies, exhibitions, performances, and many other forms. This handout will focus on book reviews. Above all, a review makes an argument. The most important element of a review is that it is a commentary, not merely a summary. It allows you to enter into dialogue and discussion with the work’s creator and with other audiences. You can offer agreement or disagreement and identify where you find the work exemplary or deficient in its knowledge, judgments, or organization. You should clearly state your opinion of the work in question, and that statement will probably resemble other types of academic writing, with a thesis statement, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Typically, reviews are brief. In newspapers and academic journals, they rarely exceed 1000 words, although you may encounter lengthier assignments and extended commentaries. In either case, reviews need to be succinct. While they vary in tone, subject, and style, they share some common features: First...

If homework is not turned in on the day it is due it will receive a zero. The first zero will result in an email sent to your parents. The second zero will result in a referral to a dean. For projects, book reports, and for the research paper the late policy is a little different than the daily homework policy. The first day that it is late it will get 10% taken off of its overall grade earned. For the second day that it is late it will get 20% taken off of the overall grade earned. Writing a Book Report

...Writing a Book Report Summary: This resource discusses book reports and how to write them. Contributors: Purdue OWL (owl.English.purdue.edu) Book reports are informative reports that discuss a book from an objective stance. They are similar to book reviews but focus more on a summary of the work than an evaluation of it. Book reports commonly describe what happens in a work; their focus is primarily on giving an account of the major plot, characters, thesis, and/or main idea of the work. Most often, book reports range from 250 to 500 words. Before You Read Before you begin to read, consider what types of things you will need to write your book report. First, you will need to get some basic information from the book: • Author • Title • Publisher location, name of publisher, year published • Number of Pages You can either begin your report with some sort of citation, or you can incorporate some of these items into the report itself. Next, try to answer the following questions to get you started thinking about the book: • Author: Who is the author? Have you read any other works by this author? • Genre: What type of book is this: fiction, nonfiction, biography, etc.? What types of people would like to read this kind of book? Do you typically read these kinds of books? Do you like them? • Title: What does the title do for you? Does it spark your interest? Does it fit well with the text of the book? • Pictures/Book Jacket/Cover/Printing:...

Book Review

...Thing(ness) 1. Read this (this thing 1 cm. below) P. J. O’Rourke, the political satirist, reviews in this issue a new book about Starbucks. He told us, in an e-mail exchange, how he brews his own reviews: “I read something I’m reviewing the same way I read other things except more so. That is, I already keep a commonplace book (a file folder, really) for quotations, ideas, information, etc. If I’m going to write a review I mark the work for myself, but besides underlining what interests me I also underline what — as far as I can tell — interested the author. By the time I’m done I have an outline for the review. All I have to do is figure out a smart-aleck lead sentence and a wiseacre ending.”[1] 2. Then read the “How to write a Book Review” article on the very next page. Yes, it is a bit long but the information is really quite good. 3. Over the week go to www.salon.com or to http://www.nytimes.com/pages/books read at least five reviews and then divide them into good and bad reviews. Think about the specific qualities that define the better ones. The article from step two of this process will be helpful at this point. At the end of the day a good book review sees an interesting pattern or spins your understanding of the book in a new and delightful way…and importantly is enjoyable to read (as a writer you need to have fun savaging the book, exploring it, dwelling on it, falling in love with it, etc.). Finally remember that your job is to convince a reader of the...

Book Of Revelations Rhetorical Analysis

...In the eyes of Phillip Kent, the town was going to hell. First, they built the air force base that caused large military trucks to clog up the roads. Then they built the test site where they plotted the end of the world. And plot they did. Phillip would rant and rave and scream and complain to anyone that would listen. “They’re doing stuff over there that’s not right,” he would say, his hands shaking and his long face dripping with sweat. “I know. I read the Book of Revelations. I know end times when I see it, and this here’s the end times – mark my words. They’re messing with things that shouldn’t be messed with.” Still, no one paid him any mind. Every town had their fool, and Phillip was the fool of Beatty, Nevada. So, when Doris and Marvin Hinckley moved to Beatty in the summer of ’57, they followed suit with the rest of the town....

JEDI had operated since 1993 as a nonconsolidated SPE. Enron wanted to create a larger unit with capital of $1 billion, and CalPERS asked to be bought out. Chewco was created as a vehicle to attract a a replacement for CalPERS and to buy out CalPERS’ interest in JEDI. Originally, Andrew Fastow proposed that he be appointed to manage Chewco temporarily unitl an outside investor, or counterparty, could be found. According to the Powers Report, Enron lawyers advised against this since his senior officer status would have required proxy disclosure. Instead, Michael Kopper, who worked at Enron for Fastow, a fact known only to Jeffrey K. Skilling on the board of directors, was appointed. Enron planned to guarantee loans for bridge financing to buy out CalPERS’ interest in JEDI, which had been valued at $383 million. The intention was to replace the bridge financing with the investment of an outside investor, but none was found. Enron’s financial year end passed on December 31, 1997; without an independent, controlling outside investor with at least 3 percent of the capital at risk, $11.5 million in this case (3 percent of $383 million), the activities of both JEDI and Chewco had to be consolidated into Enron’s financial...

As the tourist board of Australia would say, “There is nothing like Australia” (Australia) but The Australian bush poet, Dorothea Mackellar , said it best in her poem "My Country" with an affirmation that speaks for all Australians. "I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding rains. I love her far horizons, I love her jewel-sea, Her beauty and her terror - The wide brown land for me!" Dorothea Mackellar [ (Baskerville, 2009) ] You could easily spend three to four weeks discovering all of Australia. However if time were limited, then a short weeklong “walkabout” to the area of your choice would do. Australia is divided into six states each with a different landscape and cultural difference: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. AUSTRALIA Prepare for your Australian trip, by learning about the currency; how to place a phone call; and what to do if a medical or safety emergency happens. Approximately, 85 percent of the people of Australia live in the southeastern quarter of the country, especially in large cities along the coast. The vast interior of Australia is too dry to support a large population, and few people live there. The eastern Highlands, sometimes called...

...that allowed this to happen so quickly. Ireland’s membership of alliances such as the E.U. and the O.E.C.D and the directives that were incurred as a result of these memberships. More recently in the Nineties the economy had enjoyed a period of prosperity which was generally accredited to the provision of subsidies to knowledge based industries such as I.T., Financial Sectors and Research & Development. This coupled with a desirable location and a new highly educated workforce. As stated in the department of finances report in 2011 the economy experienced imbalances due to bad auditing systems in the banking and building sectors. “The Irish economy was transformed over the past two decades. Per capita income rose strongly, converging towards and subsequently overtaking European average levels. However, from the early part of the last decade, imbalances began to emerge which made the economy increasingly vulnerable. A major property bubble began to unwind from 2007, and the fall-out from this was exacerbated by the major deterioration in the external environment. As a result, GDP has fallen by around 15% from its peak in Q4 2007.”(Dept of finance, Mar 2011) The nature of jobs is a concept based on a number of variables integral to that employment. The government have become aware of resources the Irish workforce and economy possess that allow it to sustain growth here. The Irish government have now decided to champion Indigenous companies...

Compare and Contrast 1929 – 39 Great Depression and Current Global Economic Crisis with Respect to Causes and Responses and Actions of Monetary Authorities to This Crisis

...[pic] [pic] Assignment Course code: ECON 403 Course title: Monetary Theory and Policy Lecturer: Asst. Prof. Dr. Hasan Gungor Student: Murad Alakbarov Student number: 065028 Task for Assignment II: Compare and contrast 1929 – 39 Great Depression and current global economic crisis with respect to causes and responses and actions of monetary authorities to this crisis. Introduction “…In the old days, we used to suffer nearly periodic economic crises, the sudden onset of which was called a "panic", and the lingering trough period after the panic was called "depression". The most famous depression in modern times, of course, was the one that began in a typical financial panic in 1929 and lasted until the advent of World War II. After the disaster of 1929, economists and politicians resolved that this must never happen again. The easiest way of succeeding at this resolve was, simply to define "depressions" out of existence. From that point on, America was to suffer no further depressions. For when the next sharp depression came along, in 1937-38, the economists simply refused to use the dread name, and came up with a new, much softer-sounding word: "recession". From that point on, we have been through quite a few recessions, but not a single depression. But pretty soon the word "recession" also became too harsh for the delicate sensibilities of the American public. It now seems that we had our last recession in 1957-58. For since...
