Use Cases
Need cash? When a customer decides that he or she needs to process a withdrawal from their bank account that action is exactly that, a process. The customer first inserts their ATM into the card reader slot and expects that the transaction will go by smoothly and uneventful, but things could possibly go wrong. If the card reader is not able to read the card, it will eject the card and display an error message on the screen. Examples of an error message may include “Error Code 1” which would me that the system has timed-out while trying to process your request.
If the system is able to successfully read the card, it will move on to ask for the customer’s pin number. The system will, in a matter of seconds, verify that the pin number entered is in fact correct and if so continue with the process. As soon as the pin number is verified, it will than display a menu of various options. Among that list of options, the customer will find the option to withdraw money. And this will be the beginning of a new process.
Once the card has been inserted, read, accepted, and authenticated by the system; the withdrawal transaction will begin. This withdrawal transaction has many steps that need to be followed. First off, the system will display the question on the screen asking the customer to choose whether to withdraw from a savings or checking account. In the event that the customer selects to withdraw from a type of account that she or he does not own, the system, depending on the bank, will either can the whole process or bring the customer back to the screen in which they select the type of account the withdrawal is to be made from. After the correct type of account is chosen, whether it be checking or savings, the customer is asked to select the amount of cash that he or she wishes to withdraw from the account. This is usually accompanied with a message that states the range of the amount that is allowed to be withdrawn through an ATM transaction as well as the maximum that can be withdrawn in a 24-hour period. This range varies by bank, but it can be anywhere from $20 to $1,000 and it requested in increments of $10 or $20 once again, depending on which bank we are using.

Once the amount desired is selected or punched in, the system will than verify that the selected account does in fact have the sufficient funds to dispense the cash. If the account is found to not have enough funds to dispense the requested cash, it will display a message on the screen informing the customer that the transaction cannot be processed due to insufficient funds. After the verification of the funds availability has been done successfully, the desired amount will be dispensed. As soon as the money requested has been removed from the ATM machine, the system will ask if the customer wishes to carry out another transaction. If the customer does want another transaction, it will once again request the pin number followed by a menu of the different transactions offered. If no other transaction is desires, the system will end the current transaction and a receipt will print which will show the transaction that was processed with the time and date stamped on the receipt.

When conducting a deposit into a bank account, the process that takes place is very similar to that of a withdrawal process. The customer will once again insert their ATM card into the card reader slot and wait for the system. Once the card has been read and accepted, many banks now a day will return the card to the customer before asking them to input their security pin number. If the card is removed, once is no longer sensed by the system, this will ask the client to input their pin number. Assuming that the security pin code has been entered correctly, the menu options will then be displayed on the screen and customer will now choose to the option to “deposit.” If the pin entered is found to be incorrect, the system will once again ask the customer to input the pin. The system will allow their customer to enter their pin up to three times if it is incorrect. If at the fourth try, the pin number entered is still not correct, a message to talk to a bank representative directly will be displayed on the screen and the entire transaction will be cancelled. After choosing the option to deposit, the systems will then ask the client to choose the type of account in which to deposit the incoming money. Whether it’s going into a checking or saving, the system will allow the customer to input the amount of money to be deposited onto the selected account type. This information will then be transferred to the bank servers to verify that the customer can and is able to deposit via an ATM card. Within seconds, the server will send over its answer in regards to the deposit and it will be displayed on the screen. If the deposit cannot be made, the customer will be notified. If the deposit is possible, the customer will be asked to insert the cash through the cash slot or if checks through the check slots. Once the money is inserted, the system will verify that the amount that the customer entered is in fact the amount that is being received in the system. The money is counted and the check amount if verified before the transaction is approved and accredited to the customer’s bank account. Once the deposit has been completed, the screen will display a message asking if there is to be any other deposits. If so, than the money will be inserted into the respective slot and processed by the system. If there is no more deposits, than that screen will display a message asking if the customer would like to do another transaction. If the customer chooses to do more transaction(s), than he or she will be taken back to the options menu. If no more transactions are desired, the system will generate a receipt with the details of all the transactions that were made during this visit.

For a transfer transaction, once the customer has gone through the startup process successfully, the menu options will be displayed on the screen. This time the customer will choose the “make a transfer” option. In order for transfer to be accepted by the system, both accounts, the one receiving and the one sending, will have to be with the same bank and linked with that one card being used. The system will than ask the customer to input the amount that he or she will like to transfer to the other same-bank account. As soon as the system receives all the necessary responses and inputs from the customer, it will transfer to the server used by the bank to get approval. Once approved by the server and the transfer has been made, just like a deposit and withdrawal transaction, the system will ask the customer if he or she desires another transaction. If the answer is yes, the customer will be taken to options menu once again after successfully inputting the security pin number.

As in any other matter, what may seem as a simple everyday bank transaction has its ethical side. One major ethical concern, is that the customer is exposing their ATM card onto this system with the risk of having the information stolen and even worse, misused. Therefore there needs to be a tight security governing the ATM system so that its customer can feel safe and completely certain that their bank information is secured and not being exposed for anyone in the public to see.

Assignment 2: Use Cases A use case is a methodology that is used in system analysis as a means to identify, clarify, and organize system requirements. The use cases has make up of several possible sequences for users to interact with a system of a particular environment that is in relation to a particular goal. There are a group of elements that the use case consists of, these elements in be in either the classes or interfaces category. Use cases give a description of how users will perform tasks. There are two main parts of a use case; the steps a user will take to accomplish a particular task on the ATM machine, and the way the ATM should respond to the user's actions. A use case will begin with a user's goal and end when that goal is fulfilled. A use case will describe the interaction sequence between a user and an ATM machine. Use Cases

...Use Cases Christopher Dole Professor Jennifer Merritt CIS210: Systems Analysis and Development 3 February 2013 A use case diagram demonstrates the uses and requirements of a process and its actors. When creating use case diagrams they should be simple and easy to understand so that all levels of outside users can see and understand the roles they have in the overall project (Chen, Slides 6,7). In my first use case we see a use case that addresses the actors and actions for an ATM withdrawal. The use case diagram is simplified and shows how a customer will use an ATM machine to request a withdrawal. It shows the initial interaction in which it is understood the customer will need to enter their ATM Card and provide their PIN to gain access to the account information that is magnetically stored on their card. The high level overview shows a real basic path of the customer requesting a withdrawal and the ATM sending the request to the bank where it receives a confirmation or denial of funds available and then a response is sent to the customer in the form of approval and funds dispersed or a denial. Both will provide a receipt to the customer with the updated balance information or reason for denial. This simple image would be something to provide an Administrator or the like who would be interested simply in the quick path of what is expected. The next UML diagram I included breaks the USE Case into a more specific pattern that shows the events that will take place within...
