A dystopia is an anti-paradise usually with a totalitarian government controlling it. A dystopian novel is often a futuristic society that has degraded into a repressive and controlled state. Ayn Rand was a Russian-born American novelist who wrote Anthem during World War 2. Ayn Rand’s Anthem is an example of a dystopian novel based on the society worshipping the council, independent thought, free speech and the ability to retain any knowledge they wanted is restricted and the Unmentionable times being banished and forgotten. The first reason showing that Anthem is a dystopian novel is that the society worships the Council of Scholars. The Council makes the rules and disciplines the people who do not follow the rules. Equality discovered a tunnel from the Unmentionable Times that he has kept secret from the Council, and therefore since the Council knows nothing of this tunnel it is also a violation to enter it. Equality not only uses this tunnel to escape from his society for short periods of time, but also uses this tunnel to hoard things such as candles, paper and pencils. As well as a site to escape to be alone and a storage house, Equality conducts experiments down in his tunnel. These actions has put Equality in danger of being caught for these practices are forbidden and performing them are violating the ordinances of the society. When Equality escaped the theatre to go to his tunnel he had been gone too long and realized his timer had run out too late. When Equality had left his tunnel he noticed that the theatre was pitch black and no one was in sight, so he decided to return to the Home of the Street Sweepers. After his return to the Home, Equality was confronted and questioned by the Council of the Home; the Council then asked Equality, “Where have you been?”( Rand 35 ) to which Equality replies, “We will not tell you”( Rand 35 ). After this, the Council rewards Equality for his denial of an explanation by sending him to the Palace of Corrective Detention to get lashed until he informs the Council of where he has
