“Ushpizin” is a movie based off of a couple, Moshe and Malli, who are part of an Orthodox Jewish group in Jerusalem. Moshe is a rabbi and his wife stays at home. At the beginning of the movie, Moshe and Malli are desperate for money and after hours of prayer, they received $1000.00 unexpectedly. The entire movie is focused around the Jewish Sukkot Festival. Throughout the movie, some viewers may find intriguing that a citron was worth 1000 shekels and that the Jewish people spend a lot of time setting up a Sukkah. Viewers may also find that when Moshe accepted his “friends” back into his home interesting, especially after he heard them talk badly about his wife. Provided that obtaining a citron is part of the four species within Judaism, 1000 shekels was an extremely expensive price. However, this citron was considered the perfect one. A citron is a large, yellow fruit that is similar to a lemon. When Moshe and Malli got the unexpected money, the citron was the first item that Moshe purchased. Jews choose a citron at the time of the Sukkot festival to bring good luck to the family. During one scene in the movie, Moshe passed his Sukkah and overheard his “friends” talking badly about his wife and how she does not have any children yet. Within Judaism, having children is very important because it allows for the religion to carry on into the future. Even though Moshe tells them to leave, they end up coming back and bombarding his dinner with Malli. Moshe does not kick them out and allows them to eat all of their food.
