Reflection #2

Albeit long, the VIA Survey of Character Strengths was quite interesting. I had done several kinds of strength finders or personality tests and tried to not steer my answers in any direction. My top 5 strengths were kindness, fairness, leadership, caution, and forgiveness. Kindness, fairness and forgiveness weren’t very surprising to me. I love live a life working for a bigger cause than myself and to show everyone the respect they deserve. I was surprised the most was leadership. Not that I do not see myself as a leader, because I think anyone has the capabilities of leadership but in all my previous strength finders or even Myers-Brigg my results never strike people as leader. This was a pleasant surprise the reassured …show more content…
In terms of hope, it is not that I do not expect the best in the future and that I do not work to achieve it. I know everything I do today will help me for a better tomorrow. But I feel that right now I am more focused on the now and the short-term future (aka after graduation). I am still applying to jobs and have solidified anything so the uneasiness with that could definitely throw of my score. The future has a lot of unknowns in it, I think its important to be realistic that the future cannot be ‘best’ but you can still desire for it to be great. I think this does not suggest that I lack hope or optimism but I may be more realistic that what I thought I was, and are perhaps not very future-minded. I think this will improve with more time after I have a secured employment. So as I age I would hope to see this area in my life …show more content…
Which, after reading makes sense and it does not really fit me. Not that I will not speak up for what is right, but for example in my staff meetings, if someone has a better idea I may say my mind but I will go with the other idea, or if my idea has already been said I do not feel the need to repeat the same thing over and over again in a group discussion. It is not that I do not value my contributions but I also value others and can see what may solve a problem better. This is interesting because the bravery section describes ‘a courageous person who does not shrink from threat, challenge…” I do not consider it shrinking; I consider my actions as harmonic in nature, which is inkling to my fairness and leadership strengths. What I can do to improve this area in my life would be that if the occasion does arise that I think my idea may be better, to be more direct and stand my ground in my beliefs and to be more action driven. I think this area could be more of a struggle than the previous one because of how strong my first 5 strengths are to my core values. But I feel like this bravery and valor could be used in things that tie into my values, like social justice and equity. With experience and practice that comes with age this attribute could become

VIA Character Strengths

...In order to determine my strengths this week I completed the VIA Survey of Character Strengths. In 1999, Dr. Peterson and Dr. Siegelman collaborated to create the VIA survey to help us with our understanding of psychological strengths. These doctors both had similar hopes, on creating a pathway for positive psychology and dramatically changing the traditional approach to diagnosis and treatment. The VIA survey is used to find virtues, character strengths and situational habits as these are core components agreed upon by Sigelman and Peterson. It has been found through the research and the VIA Institute on Character, which provides access to raw data for use in hundreds of research studies. These studies have provided us with strong evidence...

Analysis of Character Strengths and Effects on Well-Being

...Character Strengths and Well-Being Analysis As children, we rely on our parents and those closest to us to teach us how to live. They are the ones that directly influence our morals, values, character, etc. Once we get older, outside influences like school, media, and our peers start to affect us as well. The character strengths we possess are also included in this. These types of strengths are taught to us through practice over time as we grow up. Jane Gillham discusses how we are influenced by our families, community, media, etc. in her study on whether or not one’s character strengths affect our subjective well-being. She defines this type of well-being as “the cognitive and emotional evaluations of our lives”. (Gillham) Her studies have shown that character strengths have been previously found to relate inversely with behavior issues like depression and suicide. In her most recent study, she focuses on whether or not character strengths like honesty and happiness and whether or not our strengths say anything about our overall well-being. However, in this particular study, I think there are far too many factors to actually correlate information between the two as anything more than coincidence. One’s character strengths could potentially correlate with overall well-being, as long as one knows how to use these character strengths and embraces them. “The strengths that are most connected to well-being are well factored by mood.” -(Gillham) Some of the key strengths tested...

...Felicia Marshall PSYC4110 Journal Submission 2 Capella University August, 2015 Description – Section 4 #1 (Compassionate Love Scale) I feel the assessment gave me adequate and accurate information on my tendency to compassionate. It asked me very personal questions to make me look deep within myself to ask myself if I really feel a certain kind of way about people. I did not find anything surprising with the assessment. It actually affirmed what I thought I felt about people. I wasn’t looking for any magical answer or scoring that’s too out of the way. It was meaningful to me in the sense that I was able to continue to be honest about my answers, and in the end I was able to come up with the result that I expected. This activity was not uncomfortable for me to complete, because I love assessments that truly ask the deep questions to challenge me. I respect the answers, because they are very true, and if there is something I need to change, then I can do so. I learned that my reality is real. I used to have a different feeling about compassion and mankind when I was younger, because in my eyes man could not do any wrong. I honestly feel differently towards strangers today, as the world is not what it was when I was a child. I find that I still have compassion there, however it has been altered over the past decade of my life. I can take my results and evaluate how I treat people with compassion. I am usually able to sympathize/empathize...

Food retail rose 0.3%mth but was basically flat over Q1; clothing retailers saw a 1.4% fall; department stores had a better month but household good retailers registered a second monthly decline suggesting we may be seeing renewed caution/restraint from consumers big ticket discretionary spending. Small ticket categories continue to hold up comparatively well. • The wedge between mining and non-mining states is widening with retail sales down 0.6%mth in NSW and 0.4%mth in Vic – both states having recorded four monthly declines in the last six months. In contrast, Qld and WA continue to record solid 1%+ gains. • Notwithstanding areas of strength – the resource states and some small-ticket discretionary categories – the overall picture remains decidedly soft. Even allowing for the 'extenuating circumstances' affecting retail – online competition in particular - the message appears to be of subdued consumer demand that at the very least has extended the soft Q4 result into 2012 and may even be seeing a further weakening. Retail sales posted another disappointing month in February, albeit one that was in line with expectations. Total retail sales rose 0.2%mth to be up 2%yr. That followed a 0.3% gain January. While the two months is an improvement on the flat finish to 2011, trend sales growth continues to moderate and is now tracking at just 0.1%mth, an annualised pace of 0.9%yr...
