I find the legend or history of Valentine’s Day intriguing. Valentine’s Day contains both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. The story goes that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor, Claudius II, decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, so he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers. In secret of course. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. On February 14, 273 AD Valentine had died. People felt it was necessary to dedicate the day to him for everything he had done. That day is now known as Valentine’s Day.

New York: St. Martin's Press, Inc., 1998. Shakespearean Criticism. Ed. Michelle Lee. Vol. 82. Detroit: Gale, 2004. From Literature Resource Center. Critical essay Full Text: COPYRIGHT 2004 Gale, COPYRIGHT 2007 Gale, Cengage Learning [(essay date 1998) In the following essay, Wiles examines the festive and carnivalesque elements in A Midsummer Night's Dream. According to the critic, the play was historically part of an "aristocratic carnival" used to celebrate weddings in upper-class society.] Carnival theory did not begin with Bakhtin, and we shall understand Bakhtin's position more clearly if we set it against classical theories of carnival.1 From the Greek world the most important theoretical statement is to be found in Plato: The gods took pity on the human race, born to suffer as it was, and gave it relief in the form of religious festivals to serve as periods of rest from its labours. They gave us as fellow revellers the Muses, with Apollo their leader, and Dionysus, so that men might restore their way of life by sharing feasts with gods.2 This is first a utopian theory, maintaining that carnival restores human beings to an earlier state of being when humans were closer to the divine. And second, it associates carnival with communal order. Plato argues that festive dancing creates bodily order, and thus bodily and...

Single on Valentine's Day

...India, around the time I turned 14. On Valentine's Day, I waited in line with hordes of other teenagers just for a chance to get into the store. I remember wishing two things. One: That I wasn't the only person there with her mother. Two: That the cute boy whom I could see through the store window was skimming through the aisles picking out a gift for me. It was such a scene — the hundreds of greeting cards with messages of love and romance, guys in their school uniforms looking uncomfortable as they tried to pick the perfect stuffed animal for their girlfriends, many of whom were beside them giving them not-so-subtle hints. I wanted so desperately to be a part of this. Unfortunately, Valentine's Day passed and I received nothing but a lecture from my father on how Western capitalism was ruining our culture. The next Valentine's Day, I still didn't have a boyfriend, but I did receive a greeting card from a secret admirer. It would have been flattering, except the card featured a picture of an office desk with neatly arranged paper clips and pens. I can't remember what it said inside the card, but it hardly mattered. While other women inspire candlelit dinners and marriage proposals, some guy felt the need to tell me that I was as exciting as office supplies. Not to say that all my Valentine's Days have been dull. I had a particularly memorable one the year I was dating, long-distance, a guy who lived in England. I had been waiting all day for him to surprise me. I had thought...

Nature of National Bookstore

...Nature of the Business National Bookstore is the leading retail chain of books and other supplies in the Philippines. Since their main targets are the students and office people, they provide them their “basic needs” with affordable prices. Aside from school and office supplies, they also offer equipment, gift items, toys, and room decorations. And during special days or events, they offer special items in compliance to the occasion. For example, they offer Christmas decorations and gifts during the “-ber” months and they offer gifts appropriate during the Valentine season. Furthermore, they also offer some services like printing, photocopying, lamination, binding, balloon making and many more. The business is open to keep their products modernized, by updating its shares and scouts from around the world for different sources. It holds on to current buyers’ needs, adding variety of products. Also, to encourage buyers to purchase their merchandise, they allow leisure reading. Often times, the bookstore would be seen near schools and universities or communities where their customers would most likely to be found. This creates their branches more accessible for consumers and at the same time profitable. Against the first half, hence hindering the period profitability. While the company makes just 40% of its annual sales over this period, 50% of the fixed costs of production and marketing are nevertheless charged against the first half, hence hindering the period profitability. (Sweetest performance ever for Lindt &Sprungli) Brand Strategy In its more mature markets, such as Italy, France and Switzerland, Lindt is focusing on de-seasonalising chocolate consumption, away from special occasions such as Easter and Valentine's Day. The company is also focusing attention on the consumer rather than promoting its products through specialist fairs such as it used to. The latest launch, in its Excellence range, included direct mailing samples to a large number of Swiss households. The emphasis of the strategy is to develop high quality chocolate as a daily indulgence, rather than an occasional treat. In the US, the company's strategy to increase consumer awareness of premium chocolate through its branded boutiques is paying off in terms of new consumers. = WILL SHUT DOWN A FEW YEARS LATER. Automat "Edward Hopper"

...Ard Hopper “Automat” was painted by Edward Hopper in 1927. The painting was displayed for the first time on valentines day, and was sold for $1200. The picture depicts a young woman sitting alone in some kind of cafeteria. She is drinking a cup of coffee, while she’s staring at her hot drink. She is dressed in a long warm winter coat, and a hat pulled down on her head. On her left hand she is wearing a glove, while holding the coffee cup in the right. The painting method is oil on canvas. The colours in the painting are both dark and light, which makes the painting very cold. The background of the painting is the outside of the automat (a café with mechanical service) and is all black, and you can’t see what there is behind the large windows. In the windows you can only see the bright reflects of the lamps in the ceiling of the automat, which seems to be never ending the night. The inside of the cafeteria is being lightened by the bright lamps, which is the only light source in the painting. The light of the lamps is very harsh and bright and not cozy at all, which is typically for the type of lamps in automats. Because of Edwards colour choosing and the fact that the woman is hiding in a large green coat, indicates that the temperature inside the automat is low. The woman’s facial expression makes her look sad, because of her tightened mouth and her eyes staring down at the table. As she sits without companionship she looks a bit afraid, which might be the reason she...

Valentine

...Valentine's Day customs developed in early modern England and spread throughout the Anglosphere in the 19th century. In the later 20th and early 21st centuries, these customs have also spread to other countries along with other aspects of American pop culture, but its impact so far has been rather more limited than that of Halloween, or that of US pop-culture inspired aspects of Christmas (such as Santa Claus). Due to a concentrated marketing effort, Valentine's Day is celebrated in some East Asian countries with Chinese and South Koreans spending the most money on Valentine's gifts. China In China, the common situation is the man gives chocolate, flowers or both to the woman that he loves. In Chinese, Valentine's Day is called lovers' festival (simplified Chinese: 情人节; traditional Chinese: 情人節; pinyin: qíng rén jié). The so-called "Chinese Valentine's Day" is the Qixi Festival, celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. It commemorates a day on which a legendary cow herder and weaving maid are allowed to be together. Valentine's Day on February 14 is not celebrated because it is often too close to the Chinese New Year, which usually falls on either January or February. In Chinese culture, there is an older observance related to lovers, called "The Night of Sevens" (Chinese: 七夕; pinyin: Qi Xi). According to the legend, the Cowherd star and the Weaver Maid star are normally separated by the Milky Way (silvery river) but are allowed to meet by...
