Most casual MLS fans are aware that Seattle and Vancouver are rivals. But many of them don't know how our why they became rivals. The goal of this blog series is to break down the rivalry and it's historical significance. Hopefully your able to obtain new fascinating information. The series will begin by examining the origins of each Club.

The Vancouver Whitecaps were initially formed in 1974. Their first match occurred on 1974 to the San Jose Earthquakes. The club participated in the now defunct North American Soccer league until 1984. New York's famous Cosmos club was also apart of the league. They defeated Rochester in the USL championship in Upstate New York. Vancouver carried their new found momentum to win another title in 08. This time they defeated Montreal. The victory became the first championship win won in Vancouver since the 92 CSL club. But the highlight of the amazing season was their friendly win against the LA galaxy. Their ability to upset the MLS club was considered an amazing feat. Vancouver had even more to celebrate after being admitted to MLS in 09. Seattle's heartbreaking 1983 heartbreaking loss; to an amazing Cosmos squad was only the beginning. Fans barley showed up, they changed their colors and they ended up folding in 1986. Blame the red, white, black and, blue, 83 kits.

Seattle was unable to resurrect the Sounders until 1994. Hopefully it dosen't take that long to bring back the Sonics. Quest field ended up reviving the Sonics. An investment group consisting of Paul Allen, Drew Carey and Joe Roth got the winning bid. The Sounders debuted at the top level for the first time since the NASL. In 2009 the club played their first match at the clink against the New York Red Bulls Seattle broke multiple attendance records. Their 1-0 conference semi final loss against Houston was extremely impressive. Seattle also sold numerous US Open Cup matches at the Star Fire Sports Complex.
