After taking the assessment, I found that my personal learning is based on the “Multivodal” style. I learn, using all of my senses, however, my Aural/ Visual is lacking a few points in comparison with its Read/Write and Kinesthetic counterparts. In order to have the best opportunity to absorb information and retain it, via multiple learning styles, I must make numerous efforts in changing my behavior & thought processes. Taking inventory and fine tuning the stronger learning styles is also imperative in pushing my learning abilities to their limits. Should these steps work, I will have enabled myself with the skills to take in more information and process it in a more efficient manner.
I am in total agreement with the VARK assessment. It proves that I have obvious strengths and weaknesses, however, not as great as I suspected. My Visual was a 10, Aural – 11, Read/Write – 13, and Kinesthetic – 14. There is importance in improving on all of my learning styles, but I would like to strengthen the “weaker” of the set, first. Once I handle that, I can then begin to fine tune the rest, and try to keep the learning styles as balanced as I can, creating an optimal learning style and adaptability. As stated earlier, my Aural/Visual styles are in need of improvement. First, I plan on finding alternative methods of study, whether its books on tape, live lectures, seminars, or “how-to” videos. These options force my use of the auditory/visual parts of my brain, thus, helping me learn and reroute some of my thought processes. Rerouting my information intake can help me with the creation of new, abstract and original ideas, and possibly remove some barriers I have with my idea-making practices. Next, I would target the fine tuning of my stronger styles, Read/Write and Kinesthetic. I have always been good with reading directions, and hands-on learning. My mind likes to remain analytical, so black & white, and de/construction of ideas or items is my forte. I like to know what make things “tick”. Since these are my stronger points, I have to begin to deconstruct myself, by finding methods that promote my Aural or Visual styles, or are extremely strong in their own respect, within the Kinesthetic and Read/Write arena. Extending my vocabulary, current events, and cultural knowledge bank is an immediate requirement in my quest for near perfection. Analytic ability does not hinder one’s ability to remain unbiased or overlook simple grammatical errors. Finding a “chi”, or balance, is imperative to good critical thinking. This “chi”, or balance, is the exact goal I am attempting to obtain with this task. The goal’s outcome is the bonus. Criticism is only as good as what you do with it. This assessment is just that, criticism. For my learning abilities, I believe the VARK assessment was a very good, arbitrary tool, which helped me realize that I can learn from the areas that I am “lacking”. I also learned that I can still improve on my “stronger” areas, and use them to also develop the remaining capacities. Ultimately, with this plan of improving my learning styles, I feel that I will expand my capacity to absorb information, and proficiently process the information, giving the ability to express ideas to others in a competent and learned manner.
