L earning is only complete when an individual can reproduce the knowledge gained from educational institutions, self-study and observance. Retention of knowledge depends on the way students have gained the knowledge; learning style varies from person to person. One method that may be highly appealing to a particular student may not be appealing to another student. So learning style is a very subjective matter and there are different ways to categorize learning styles, this paper focus on VARK learning analysis quiz and learning styles as well as the implication of understanding an individual’s learning style.

VARK abbreviation stands for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. VARK model is one of the most prevalent learning style analyzing tools. Neil Fleming developed it in 1987, to help students and others learn more about their individual learning preferences (Fleming & Mills, 2011). This methodology was the first organized arrangement of questions with ideal responses that could be used to identify students, teachers, and employers learning styles. Under Neil Fleming’s model, learners are identified according to their preferred learning style that are visual learning (images, films, pictorial representation), auditory learning (audio tapes, conversation, speeches), reading and writing (taking notes, manuals, creating list), or kinesthetic learning (movement, experiments, hands-on activities).

Visual Learners are those categories of individuals who learn the best from visual representation. They learn from seeing graphic displays such as diagrams, publications, and videos. While identifying individual learning preferences may seem elusive, there is a tool that gives students the ability to do this. Neil Fleming developed a method at Lincoln University called VARK, which helps students recognize their personal learning preferences. VARK is a questionnaire that gives the student essential information about their preferred learning style. Learning style defines the way the student takes in information as well as putting information out (Fleming, 2012). The VARK questionnaire can also help teachers to develop different, more effective methods of presentation. The results of the questionnaire are given to the learner in the modes V, A, R and K (Fleming, 1995). When a student gets to know their learning style preference, they will be able to learn more efficiently and memorize and recollect the information later that was taught. My learning style was identified as multimodal, consisting of visual learning, auditory and reading and writing techniques. In the past, I have always used reading and writing as the only way to learn. Neil Fleming created the questionnaire in 1987. It was the first of its kind with helpsheets that provide learning strategies for the users. ...2. After completing the VARK questionnaire the score indicates a multimodal learning style. The VARK model concise of four different learning styles visual, aural, read-write, and kinesthetic. (Fleming, 2011) With the multimodal learner each style is used to gain understanding of a given topic. Visual learners need information they can see, a mental model which shows how things work, using graphs, charts and diagrams. Aural learners receive information best when hearing it. The use of recorded lecture notes, attending class and discussing what they heard is most effective for this learner. Read-write learners would read information then write it out. After taking the Vark quiz I have discovered I am a kinesthetic learner. “Kinesthetic learners do best while touching and moving. It also has two sub-channels: kinesthetic (movement) and tactile (touch).” (Nwlink 2011) Kinesthetic learners will loose concentration if there is too little movement, during lectures they may take notes for the sake of having movement, if reading they will scan the material to focus on details trying to understand the “big picture”. While taking notes kinesthetic learners typically will use color highlighters and draw pictures or diagrams. When learning new information I always use highlighters in many different colors, I also am constantly drawing pictures on my notes. I enjoy learning in an environment that provides a hand on approach whether it is in a lab or clinical setting. I have always used an empty room to study in; I talk out loud about the information, think of possible test questions, and how I would go about answering them. These are all strategies I find helpful when trying to retain and recall information that is being learned. One subject who took the “VARK Questionnaire, How Do I Learn Best?” learned the results were Aural and Kinesthetic “AK”, a multimodal learning style preference. The subject’s preferred learning strategies were compared and found to be compatible with the VARK learning style strategies. Using VARK as a tool can give an instructor awareness of the individual’s learning style. This aids the instructor in developing strategies that will accommodate and influence the individual’s learning style. The subject that took the sixteen part VARK questionnaire chose to answer some categories with one selection and others with two or more selections. Preferred Learning Style and Strategies Prior to the Visual, aural, read/writing, kinesthetic assessment my preference for learning has always been visual combine with hands on learning. This involves being able to apply what is being taught whether that be with past life experiences, seeing a demonstration or use of graphs, displays, etc. My memory works to its fullest potential with being able to refer to a physical idea and remember what was seen. Rather than reading alone, my preference for learning from graphs, videos or statistics is great. For example learning for me is enhanced if objects are used during a demonstration. According to VARK my preferred learning styles is multimodal and mild kinesthetic, a score of 6 for visual, 1 for aural, 2 for reading/writing and an 8 for kinesthetic. Multimodal means learning from multiples sources in various forms to solidify understanding. Since kinesthetic is my strongest learning preference. Recommended strategies include using all senses (sight, touch, taste, smell, hearing, hands on trips/tours/exhibits/samples, use of real life examples, photographs, trial and error, collection of objects and referring to previous papers/exams and prior solutions to problems.
