According to my VARK questionnaire, I am a read/write learner. Read/write learners prefer to read material and make notes on what they have read. They often take notes in class, rewrite the notes at home summarizing material and turn visual aids such as graphs and diagrams into words. They make lists, practice tests and prefer to study alone. I enjoy making flashcards. I can put the most important information onto a small area and take them with me everywhere. The flashcards also keep information from overwhelming me. Staring at page after page of information in a book is daunting. Breaking the information down into smaller pieces makes it easier to process and remember. I also utilize the technique of practice tests. This is a great way to study and prepare your mind for the task of taking the actual test. Another tool that helped me during nursing school was case studies. They made me examine the whole picture instead of getting caught up on the immediate problem. These techniques worked for verbal and written presentation, but when it came to clinical skills I did better hands on. I would still make a list of the order in which to perform each task, but actually putting my hands on a mannequin or patient was a much better way to ensure the skill was concrete in my mind. There are several different types of learning styles and we all tend to use more than one.

The Seven Learning Styles

Visual (spatial): You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.

Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music.

Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing.

Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch.

Logical (mathematical): You

...Running head: VARK LEARNING STYLE ANALYSIS Vark Learning Style Analysis September 08, 2011 Vark Learning Style Analysis Vark is a questioner tool that can assist different people from different approaches to improve their learning skill, improve communication ability and save time. It can specially help individuals who have experienced learning difficulty in the past. Since more learning situations require the use of more than one modality vark can provide an assessment of how the respondent applies the four learning modalities in learning activities. When individuals know about their own learning style it can help them to concentrate, process, absorb, and retain new and difficult information. Most people about 60% of any population are multimodal learners(as cited in Jdental.org, 2011). The vark analysis results showed I am also one of the multimodal learners. Preferred learning style based on testing are read-write score of 13, aural 11, kinesthetic 12, and visual with the lowest score of 5. For the people who have multimodal learning style such as myself is preferably to try to use all different types learning approaches. For instance to learn visually using maps, charts, graphs, diagrams, different colors, and pictures can be helpful. Aural learners should explain new ideas , discuss topics with other students or instructors, use tape recorders, and attend lectures. Individuals who learn through read/ write should take notes, read printed hand outs, and also...

...VARK ASSESMENT There are several ways to determine what an individual’s learning style is. For a student to perform at their best it is helpful to know what learning style works best for them and to understand their particular learning style. The VARK module is one of the most common models used today. It was developed by Neil Fleming in 1987 as a way to assist students in learning more about their individual learning styles (Cherry, 2012). VARK stands for visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic. A student can have a single learning style or multiple learning styles. If the student has multiple learning styles their learning preference would be called multimodal. The majority of learners fall under the multimodal as much as 60% of any population (Fleming, 2011). Educators can use the module as well they can use it teach more effectively. With it they can gain a better appreciation of how they process information which is what they use to teach. They can use their findings to develop teaching methods that can reach a broader student population encouraging their students to learn (Marcy, 2001). The VARK assessment was used to asses a student who is currently enrolled in college classes. The student was assessed for this paper and was found to have a multimodal (AK) learning preference meaning more than one learning preference. A multimodal learning can have several different combinations of styles. In this case the student scores showed Visual: 4, Aural:...

...Vark Analysis Paper MacKenzie Pudenz Grand Canyon University NRS 429V January 19, 2013 Vark Analysis Paper “Multiple intelligences and mental abilities do not exist as yes-no entities but within a continua which the mind blends into the manner in which it responds to and learns from the external environment and instructional stimuli. Conceptually, this suggests a framework for a multimodal instructional design that relies on a variety of pedagogical techniques, deliveries, and media (Picciano, 2009, p. 11). “ According to the VARK assessment I have a multimodal learning strategy, and I completely agree! I adjust to the learning style that best suits the topic. I “go with the flow” or “roll with the punches” and redesign my learning strategy to that what is expected or requested of me at that time. As a result of a multitude of educators, teachers, instructors, and just as many topics of education, I have morphed and molded my learning styles (which includes all types of styles, aural, read/write, visual and kinesthetic) to adapt to the particular type of learning that the present topic requires. While my natural learning style seems to fall in the read/write/aural category, out of habit, pattern, repeated experiences, I am able to use all types of learning strategies to process and learn the information required from me! Learning for me comes in a variety of avenues! I feel the learning strategy I use is largely determined by the type of material I plan on learning...

...Vark Analysis Lindsay Williams Grand Canyon University The Vark assessment tool is a questionnaire that will provide the user with an understanding about the type of learner they are, and what are the most useful resources to for maximum learning. The questionnaire consists of 16 questions which are aimed at isolating a learner’s preference to give them a better understanding of what is most effective for their retention of information being taught. According to the Vark questionnaire, there are four types of dominant learning styles; Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic. Additionally, Vark introduces a sub category of learning called multimodal. (Fleming, 2011) If the learner has a preference for Aural style of learning, he or she may want to use the following methods: attending lecture, discussion of the topic with peers, using a tape recorder, teach back of material learned to others not in attendance. (Fleming, 2011) The Read/Write study strategy, which is what this author is most prone to according to the questionnaire, suggests that one learns best with lists, definitions, handouts, textbooks, verbatim notes and/or manuals. A read/write learner may write the material repeatedly, or reread their notes to themselves several times. They may also rewrite the principals being introduced into their own lists or format that is consistent with their own understanding. Kinesthetic learners, according to Vark, are most attracted to things that involve their senses;...

...and in a multimodal there is a four part VARK profile. Multimodal styles are a mixture of the other four models, and the style is as a result of not having one mode stand out more than the others. These styles come in two forms they’re the flexible type that switch mode depending on the material being taught. People with multimodal preference one mode over the other to fit the occasion. Further, there can always express their Kinesthetic preference when if they need to watch a demonstration of a technique, The style is commonly referred to as VARK type in VARK database one with two, three of even four equal preference in their VARK scores (Fleming, 2006). The other type is the VARK type two that comes to understand a different set of preferred learning where the learner is not satisfied until they have studied in all of their preferred modes. The problem with type two is they take it takes to gather the necessary information from each mode and as a result often have a deeper and broader understanding. The style seen more procrastinators or slow-delivers is misconception since there just gathering information before acting and it obvious their decision and learning is better due to that breadth of understanding (Fleming, 2006). Preferred learning strategy My preferred learning strategy is the multimodal strategy that combines four preferences that are Visual Strategy, Aural Strategy, Read/Write Strategy, and Kinesthetic Strategies. ...The Vark Analysis of Learning Preference According to Zhou (2011), learning strategies are defined as “ any sets of operations, steps, plans, routines used by the learner to facilitate the obtaining, storage, retrieval and use of information” (para, 10). Identifying an individual’s style of learning is important for those seeking to maximize learning potential. For learning to occur, the material should be presented to the individual in a way that promotes understanding. People vary in the ways information is taken in and by using the VARK questionnaire, identifying a person’s individual style can be obtained with valuable information provided to the user on how to become a better learner (Fleming, 2011). Multimodal Learning Making up the majority of the populations preferred learning style, multimodal learning encompasses the four categories, or any combination of, in VARK’s learning model (Fleming, 2011). The reading and writing category focuses on what is written. The individual is able to process the information easily if it given in the form of written instructions, a handout or read from a textbook or manual. For those who are aural learners, preference is on participating in discussions, attending lectures and meetings, and listening to audio tapes. Kinesthetic learners like the hands-on approach to learning. Being able to physically perform a task or manipulate objects is required for a better understanding. For the individual partial to visual learning, diagrams, charts...

...The use of VARK in Identifying Learning Strategies Melissa Barr Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V July 5, 2015 The use of VARK in Identifying Learning Strategies When a person sits down to learn new information they do not stop to think, “How would I learn this best?” They do what they have done in the past, and the process may have served well, or poorly. Fleming and Mills (1992) “suggested four modalities that seemed to reflect the experiences of the student and teachers”. These modalities are; Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic and are identified by the acronym VARK. Modalities or learning styles “refer to the methods of gathering, processing, interpreting, organizing and thinking about information” (Alkhasawneh, Mrayyan, Docherty, Alashram, & Yousef, 2008) The most effective method of learning occurs when information is presented in a learning style that an individual uses, or that they can adapt to their preferred style. The methods listed above are not absolute, and individuals may use multiple types at a time, and/or may change the way they learn due to experiences or over a period of time. As tempting as it is to make this a simplistic equation it is not, because “life (and work) are multimodal so there are no hard and fast boundaries” (http://vark-learn.com/home/). In the VARK profiles from January 2011 we find that approximately 39% are unimodal, 35% use all four modalities, 14% are bimodal and 12% are trimodal. These same approximate results...

...Assessment of Learning Style Family Centered Health Promotion Grand Canyon University, Nursing 429V Professor Holmes Julie Smith, RN Before one can decide what their VARK score is, it may be important to understand what each letter in the acronym means. The V in VARK stands for visual, A for auditory, R for reading and writing and finally the K for kinaesthetic. Each of these letters represent an individual’s preferred method of learning new information. With a total VARK score of 48, I have been placed in the Multimodal category. According to Fleming (2011) Multimodal learners "are context specific choosing the mode that best fits the need". Fleming used examples of context specific learning such as when signing a document, the Multimodal learner will use the reading/writing preference. And if Multimodal learner has to learn a physical task, they will switch to the kinaesthetic preference. For example, when learning to start an IV, the learner will learn best by practicing with real IV's and tubing even if at first they use a fake arm/vein. The Multimodal category is the largest category according to Fleming, taking up 60% of all total learners. The preferred learning strategies of this multimodal learner include aural, read/write and kinaesthetic. The intake of aural information is best learned through attending classes, discussions with others, including but not limited to teachers, using a tape recorder to hear specific information again, remembering interesting...

...could feel that they are still missing something. Different professions can shift the importance of sense from equally distributed to a skewed relationship. A chef would utilize taste and smell over their other senses to achieve a masterpiece. In contrast, in the professional student role, more individuals disregard taste and smell as a necessity to achieve their goals, leaving the other three to help them. Just like the chef has a masterful palate to raise the earning potential, so does each student have a sense that aids in boosting their learning potential. Like the human senses, there are five major learning styles which students can fall into: visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic, and multimodal which is a combination of two or more. Vark learning institute has developed a test in which to help students discover which one, or more, style they will succeed in. Multimodal students are able to learn from more than one learning style and often succeed when not restricting themselves to only one avenue to learn. The combination between two styles can aid an individual in maximizing learning and test taking abilities. For these styles do not only focus on learning but also applying that learning. One student is going to be reviewed in the following paragraphs regarding his learning style in order to compare and contrast what is typical to what is recommended for his style. ...Vark Learning Style Assessment The vark learning assessments help people different ways of learning. It backs up people who have problems with their learning. Multimodal learning style suits me the best. Majority of people come under the multimodal style when they think of studying. It is a combination of visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic learning preference (VARK 2009). Though aural and kinesthetic are identified in majority, read/write and visual are well preferred for me as well. Summary of my learning style Multimodal learning style is my preferred learning style. Assessment scores are twelve for aural, nine for kinesthetic, eight for read/write and seven for visual reading. Aural learning is by listening, discussing and remembering what you have learned. Read/write is taking information from dictionaries, handouts, textbooks and taking notes. Visual learning includes graphs, diagrams, videos, flow chart and so on. Kinesthetic learner prefers learning by hands on experiments or by doing things. Learning with a variety of ways is necessary and becomes more helpful. Preferred learning strategies Out of all multimodal strategies, aural learning helps me more. I enjoy being in a class, asking questions to the teacher, discussing and debating on topics with my colleagues, accepting and sharing ideas to and from one another. Tape recorder is an asset to aural learners. Listening to interesting examples, jokes and stories helps to remember better. Taking notes while...

An Analysis of the Vark Assessment Tool

...Running head: AN ANALYSIS OF THE VARK An Analysis of the VARK Assessment Tool Rebecca Milakovich Grand Canyon University: NUR429V December 16th, 2011 An Analysis of the VARK Assessment Tool Do you know how you learn best? There are many different ways to learn something new but do you know which one would benefit you the most? The VARK analysis tool can help you find the answer to that question. VARK stands for Visual, Aural/Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic which are the four categories of learning preferences. The online VARK questionnaire is free and consists of 16 questions that are based on real-life situations that users can easily answer and relate to. Users are able to check more than one answer to each question if more than one answer applies to them. After finishing the questions, the user is provided with a score in each of the 4 categories. If a person scores high in more than one area they are considered multi modal and are flexible in their learning styles (VARK, n.d.). The website then provides several study strategies for each learning preference that users can implement to improve their learning. The website cautions that “The results indicate a 'rule of thumb' and should not be rigidly applied. Remember that the questionnaire is not intended to 'box' respondents into a mindset that they have been 'diagnosed'. Rather, it is designed to initiate discussion about, and reflection upon, learning preferences” (VARK, n.d.) The author of this paper...

Vark Learning Style Assessment

...VARK Learning Style Assessment Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V The VARK learning style assessment is a questionnaire that was designed by Neil Flemming in 1987. It provides those who take it with a profile of their learning style(s). There are four scores that can give a person up to five study strategies: multimodal, visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic (Flemming, 2010). The way these scores add up tells a person where they fall within five areas, with multimodal being the most common at about 60% of the population (Flemming, 2010). Whatever learning style a person has, the preferences show how they take in and give out information. This paper will discuss in large part multimodal as the author has taken the VARK questionnaire and tested as such. Multimodal is the most common of the five learning styles, but it is also the most varied (Flemming, 2010). People will not necessarily have the same levels of each learning preference. One could have a very strong score in aural and read/write, but a low one in the last two. They could also have three strong scores and then one weak one. There are even some people who have scores that are even across the board. Based on that, people who are multimodal must then study more than one area to strengthen their preferences. If one is strong in read/write and kinesthetic, then that person would obviously want follow study examples that pertain to reading/writing and kinesthetic: making lists etc. and hands...

This means that she can use multiple learning strategies to her benefit when learning. Although she is a multimodal learner, some of her strengths include linguistic, kinesthetic, tactile, and intrapersonal. To strengthen her learning and studying habits to meet the demands of college, she should apply her strengths when preparing notes, making real-world connections to better understand topics, and when managing time to study.
