The VARK Questionnaire : How Do I Learn Best? Learning is the way you take in information, organize and make use of it, differs from person to person. Difference of learning style is not proportionate to a person’s abilities, but knowing their own style of learning will help them to make the task easier. By knowing their strength and weakness of learning will help them to do more what they are at best and work on to overcome their weakness. This will help them to try different learning strategies on different situations and improve the quality of learning and successful in life.
There are predominantly four types of learning style, Visual, Auditory, Read/Write and Kinesthetic. Some students learn by ‘seeing’ the materials like pictures, flash cards, power point presentation, illustrated text books etc. When taking notes they try to replace words with pictures or symbols and will highlight notes relating to one topic with same color. They try to recall work by images than words and the drawback of this learning is they can easily get distracted by other visuals like television or computer screen when studying. Certain students try to learn by ‘hearing’. These Auditory learners prefer to sit in front of the class when Instructor is lecturing and will repeat the information silently to themselves. They would read out the books loudly and will attend group discussion and debates. However the negative side is they get easily distracted by outside voices. Kinesthetic learners are who try to learn by physically experiencing or doing things. They would have a hard time in sitting for a long lecture and instead would love to take a short break in-between. Since they want hands-on experience in learning these learners would prefer lab experiments and

...VARK Analysis VARK Analysis April J. Bundy Grand Canyon University: 429V Family Health Promotions July 9, 2011 VARK Analysis VARK stands for visual, auditory, reading and writing and kinesthetic learners. When using VARK a person must understand that the questionnaire alerts people to the variety of different approaches to learning. It supports those who have been having difficulties with their learning and has particular applications in business, sport, training and education. This model focuses on the best way for a student to learn and retain new information based on sensory modality. (Fleming, 2011) When a student knows his/her learning style preferences, he/she is able to learn more effectively and store and recall the information being taught. “The last group in the four part typology is the group who like to experience their learning by using all their senses, including touch, hearing, smell, taste and sight. This group is regularly described in the literature as kinesthetic (K). They want concrete, multi-sensory experiences in their learning. Although learning by doing matches their needs they can easily learn conceptual and abstract material provided it arrives with suitable analogies, real life examples, or metaphors. They learn theory through its application.” (Fleming, 1995) Upon taking this test, I realized that I have a strong kinesthetic preference for learning. To take in the information I prefer to uses all my senses – sight, touch, taste...

A Multimodal Learning Style

...A Multimodal Learning Style January 5, 2012 NRS 429v: Family Centered Health Promotion This paper will compare the different learning styles of the VARK questionnaire. It will differentiate the results of the questionnaire and one’s preferred learning style. There are three different learning styles in the VARK questionnaire and a combination of four scores are used to determine one’s learning style. The VARK questionnaire provides a combination of four scores. The four scores the VARK questionnaire analyses are visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. A VARK profile is a combination of these four scores and gives one a learning preference. It also allows a person to see the varieties in learning preferences. The majority of people have a multimodal learning preference. In a multimodal learning style, multiple preferences are used while learning. A combination of any of the four scores may make up one’s learning style. Some people learn best using an aural learning preference. These people learn best by hearing the information aloud. They learn to take notes and then recite the information aloud. A person with an aural learning style learns best when they are able to hear directions and speak the answers. Others learn best by the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic learners are also known as tactile learners. This means that they learn best by doing the task to be done. They tend to have good hand-eye coordination. (Mayer, R.E....

The Vark Method

...An Evaluation of Learning Styles: The Vark Method Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V, Family-Centered Health Promotion An Evaluation of Learning Styles: The Vark Method Possessing a multi-modal learning style (mm), aural (A) and kinesthetic, (K), offer the learner the flexibility to move from one to another depending on the topic and/or situation. While the aural element tacks to the appreciation of lectures and discussions, the kinesthetic is more focused on “the hands” method of learning. Toggling between aural and kinesthetic is challenging and fluid, but the rewards more than compensate for this diversity in learning styles. In addition to the above learning styles, both the visual (V), and the read-write (R), scored fairly close to (A) and (K) styles. The (V) and the (R) methodology has been utilized as adjunct to the primary styles. Evaluating what is the most efficient and effective mode is the first and most crucial step. The mode needs to coincide with the topic and its complexity to be truly effective. A big plus, of course, is the ability to change the selected style and adapt the secondary style, which might prove more conducive to mastering the topic. Eccentric learning strategies are not typically commonplace, but are effective tools for the learning experience. Tactile stimulation is key to setting a foundation for the learning experience. The weight of the paper to be used must be heavier than most, a minimum of 24 lb. weight, with...

...The differences in learning styles. Angela Hott Grand Canyon University: NRS-429V August 8 2014 The differences in learning styles. This is an article that explains the many types of learning styles and some techniques that can help improve a students learning. This article also contains difference researches that have been done in learning styles of students. Individual participants finding The participant took the questionnaire designed by researchers called VARK (Fleming 2011). VARK stands for visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic. Upon completing the questionnaire the participant found out that they learn better by reading and writing. It explains that they take information in by writing lists, reading handouts, definitions and textbooks. They improve their learning by writing the words over several times and reading their notes multiple times, and that changing graphs into words help. The participant found that they can succeed by practicing multiple choice questions and writing answers out along with writing paragraphs (Fleming, 2011). Comparing the questionnaire results to true life studying is very accurate. The participant has always rewrote notes over shortly after receiving them either by writing or recording them and found it easier to study from the notes but going back to the textbook to reread an area that is not well understood and then rereading the notes multiple time both aloud and silently. During the...

... There are many differing studies available to assist the learner and the educator maximize the learning of todays’ students. This paper will focus on the VARK Questionaire: a guide to learning styles. VARK is an acronym for visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic learning preferences. This is a sixteen question survey that indicates a learners preferences for the ways in which learning is taken in and expressed. It is important to differentiate that VARK provides information about the learners Preferences not necessarily their Strengths. A learner may be a gifted artist but does not choose to learn using visual strategies. VARK data is geared for the learners learning activity not leisure activities, the learner may be an avid reader for pleasure but that is not how the learner likes to take in and express information in the learning environment. The emphasis is on how the learner gathers, processes, interprets, organizes, and thinks about new information. When answering questions on the VARK questionnaire it is important to consider only how the individual not any others responds to learning. Nobody functions solely on any one given mode, for example when a person is describing something verbally they are most likely using gestures and voice flexion’s that may be visually interesting. Another facet of the VARK to be remembered is that the word visual is not meant to be isolated to what we see as in words on the page but symbolic for information presented in visually...

Vark Learning Styles

...VARK Analysis Learning Style Scott T. Holman Grand Canyon University: NRS-429 June 17, 2014 VARK Analysis Learning Style Learning style is defined as an individual’s natural or habitual pattern of acquiring and processing information in learning situations (James, 1995). Most educational researchers and theorists generally agree that students learn in different ways (Tzu-Chien, 2009). There are many models that address learning styles including Davis A. Kolbs model based on Experiential Learning Theory, Anthony Gregorc’s Model, The Sudbury Model of Democratic Education, and so on. One of the most common and widely used models is Neil Flemming’s VARK model. The VARK model categorizes the types of learning styles as visual, aural, reading & writing, and kinesthetic or tactile. Visual learners are those that have a preference for visual aids such as graphs, diagrams, symbols, charts, etc. Aural learners learn best through lectures, discussions, and recordings. Reading/writing learners prefer text books, manuals, dictionaries and lists. The VARK model also categorizes a fifth learning style termed multimodal. Multimodal learns prefer a combination of the previous mentioned styles such as visual/aural or read & write/aural/kinesthetic. Fleming states that 60% of any population fits into the category of multimodal learners (Flemming, 2011). This authors’ style of learning has always been “read/write”. Through the use of textbook’s, journals, dictionaries, and verbatim...

Managing Personal Development

...1. Understand How to Identify and Prioritise Work-related Development Requirements Personal development is a continuous process to help develop a person’s potential to the fullest and also learning new skills in order to practice new things. Personal development is important. Many of us work in ever changing and competitive environments. If we don't keep up with training, we can miss key opportunities, it also makes us more marketable and efficient in delivering a quality service. It can also give us a focus so that there is motivation to carry on. Although early life development and early formative experiences within the family, at school etc, personal development should not stop later in life. (www.skillsyouneed.com 1st May 2016) Most of us are motivated by needs. Maslow 1970 suggests that all individuals have an in-built need for personal development which occurs through the process called self actualisation. Maslow developed the Hierarchy of needs in which he provided a understanding of human motivation and needs which needed to be met in the given order in order to progress. 1. Psychological Needs The need for oxygen, food, sex etc. these are the basic needs required for survival. 2. Safety Needs. These are the needs for security and safety ranging from security of home or income and physical security. 3. Social Needs. The need for love and affection and feeling if they belong and not feel loneliness. 4. Esteem Needs. If people...

Williams, Ph.D. Associate Professor All professors at: Northern Arizona University The W. A. Franke College of Business PO Box 15066 Flagstaff, AZ 86011.5066   The Effect of Learning Styles on Course Performance: A Quantile Regression Analysis Introduction Students have different learning styles. “They preferentially focus on different types of information, tend to operate on perceived information in different ways, and achieve understanding at different rates” (Felder, 1993, p. 286). In this study, we investigated the relationship between student performance and learning styles for students enrolled in a basic business statistics course. This course was recently redesigned in order to facilitate learning for students of all learning styles. A learner-centered approach that incorporated multiple teaching styles such as student responsibility via mastery and co-operative learning that used teams in several course components was adopted. In addition, the focus of the redesigned course was on interpretation and implications of statistical results instead of the mechanics of computation (Lockwood, Ng, & Pinto, 2007). To assess our success in designing a course that facilitates learning for all learning styles, we evaluated the impact of students’ learning style...
