The VARK Questionnaire: How Do I Learn Best? VARK refers to the different learning styles a person identifies with and learns about through taking the questionnaire. Different students will have different learning styles which assist them with obtaining the necessary information. After taking the VARK questionnaire, the results showed more of a connection to a kinesthetic learner with a strong leaning towards visual and audio learning. Understanding learning styles will assist in developing effective learning strategies which will improve learning abilities. The VARK questionnaire is a valuable tool, for assisting the learner, in understanding their preferred learning style, and allows the teacher to be able to adapt and improve their way of conveying information. A personal questionnaire will be assessed in order to help discus the purpose of a VARK questionnaire. Kinesthetic (K) is the preferred learning style with a preference for hands on learning. The kinesthetic learning style involves developing experience and knowledge in the area of learning (Gilakjani, 2012). Instead of listening to a lecture or observing someone else demonstrating the material, the kinesthetic learner prefers doing the learning activity in order to gain the knowledge. They prefer using their hands and body in order to focus and learn. This makes sense because retaining information was found easier when allowed to be able to physically engage in the learning process. When sitting still listening to a lecture, there were issues with focusing and learning the material.
The other potential learning styles are audio, visual, and read/write. The test determined scores second highest on audio and visual with the lowest being the read/write learning style. Visual learners must see the learning material in order to learn the material. Visual...

The Vark Questionnaire: How Do I Learn Best?

...The VARK Questionnaire: How Do I Learn Best? VARK questionnaire is composed of many fundamentals that associated with people’s preferred learning styles. VARK questionnaire help leaners identify their specific learning methods to focus on learning material with important segments. Any profession can use VARK learning methods to teach or introduce study materiel to their associates. The VARK questionnaire is based on four scores and there are five different learning strategies and they are, multimodal, visual, aural, read-write, kinesthetic. When an Individual takes the VARK questionnaire assessment, they will be scored under these four learning methods: visual aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. Each individual learning method are different, also it could be situational to the subject, environment and subject approach. After conducting VARK questionnaire, the results show my learning preference is multimodal. And according to VARK, if you have multiple preferences you are in the majority, as approximately 60% of any population fits that category (please use citation from VARK Multimodal study strategy_). My learning method scores are, visual 11, aural 11, read/write 13, and kinesthetic 11. Multimodal individuals’ shift their learning preferences depend up on matter of subject or certainty of subject. Changing learning preference according to the situation is significant to multimodal learners. According to VARK questionnaire Designer Neil D Fleming, there are two......

A Multimodal Learning Style

...NRS 429v: Family Centered Health Promotion This paper will compare the different learning styles of the VARK questionnaire. It will differentiate the results of the questionnaire and one’s preferred learning style. There are three different learning styles in the VARK questionnaire and a combination of four scores are used to determine one’s learning style. The VARK questionnaire provides a combination of four scores. The four scores the VARK questionnaire analyses are visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. A VARK profile is a combination of these four scores and gives one a learning preference. It also allows a person to see the varieties in learning preferences. The majority of people have a multimodal learning preference. In a multimodal learning style, multiple preferences are used while learning. A combination of any of the four scores may make up one’s learning style. Some people learn best using an aural learning preference. These people learn best by hearing the information aloud. They learn to take notes and then recite the information aloud. A person with an aural learning style learns best when they are able to hear directions and speak the answers. Others learn best by the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic learners are also known as tactile learners. This means that they learn best by doing the task to be done. They tend to have good hand-eye coordination. (Mayer, R.E. 2001) My preferred learning style is the......

...VARK Questionnaire: Preferred Learning Styles Stacey Curtis Grand Canyon University Family-Centered Health Promotion NRS-429V-0501 Kimberly Stout October 4, 2015 VARK Questionnaire: Preferred Learning Styles The assignment: To teach nurses about a new cervical collar that will be implemented in the hospital for all trauma patients with suspicion of neck injury. How are you going to present your teaching encompassing the fact that everyone’s learning styles are different? The key is knowing how you, yourself learns and studying all of the other key aspects of learning styles to be able to incorporate them in your teaching and provide the best understanding of the topic to multiple different types of learners. For example, after taking the VARK questionnaire, this learner, is identified as a kinesthetic learner. A Kinesthetic learner is one “who uses your experiences and the things that are real even when they are shown in pictures and on screens.” (The VARK Questionnaire: How Do I Learn Best, 2015.) Let’s explore this style in further detail, compare preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies for this learner’s preferred learning style and discuss how the awareness of these affects teaching and learning. For purposes of this paper, the learner, is the author. In summary, a kinesthetic learner is one who likes to use a hands-on approach to learning, is often good in math and science, would rather demonstrate how to do something rather than......

...VARK Questionnaire Analysis Julie Gongaware NRS-429V August 23, 2015 VARK Questionnaire Analysis Preferred learning strategies and styles have a tendency to vary significantly from person to person. Everyone has a different way, or combination of ways that they absorb, perceive and process newly learned information. In ‘The VARK Questionnaire: How Do I Learn Best,” a short series of questions identifies learning strategies for the person that is participating in the questionnaire. In this particular analysis J.G., the subject of the questionnaire, found that she has a multimodal preference to learning and is flexible in her communication preferences while switching from mode to mode depending on what type of material she is working with (VARK, 2015). Multimodal learners may encompass all of the strategies, visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic or at least more than one. J.G. found that she possessed preferences in each strategy with stronger learning attributes in aural and read/write strategies. Through the VARK questionnaire, J.G.’s personal learning preference has been identified as multimodal with aural being her primary style and read/write being the second most preferred style for learning. Aural refers to listening. The description of an aural strategy per the VARK (2015) questionnaire shows a preference toward receiving information that is vocalized or heard and the use of questioning as a vital component of learning. According to The Institute...

...VARK: How Do I Learn Best? Everyone has a different learning style, and this affects how they learn. “Learning style is a term used to refer to the methods of gathering, processing, interpreting, organizing, and thinking about information” (Marcy, 2001). If a student understands how they learn, they are able to maximize their learning. VARK, an acronym which stands for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic learning modalities (Marcy, 2001). The VARK is a questionnaire of 16 questions to help determine a person’s sensory preferences (Marcy, 2001). It was developed by Neil D. Fleming in 1987, to improve teacher’s development and to help students become better learners (Marcy, 2001). Using the questionnaire, it divides students into the four categories of learning styles (Marcy, 2001). Once the learning style is found, the questionnaire provides different learning strategies for the student. Understanding ones learning style is imperative to being a successful student. Once the student acknowledges how they learn they can collaborate with their teacher to enhance their learning experience. The VARK questionnaire “can be a useful tool for faculty because it empowers them to teach more effectively” (Marcy, 2001, p.118). The writer took the VARK questionnaire to determine their learning style. Preferred learning style, learning strategies, along with how the awareness of the learning style can help influence teaching and learning for the writer will be discussed. According...

...Grand Canyon University VARK NRS-429V 2013 VARK VARK is a questionnaire utilizing 16 questions to assist in determining an individual’s learning preferences profile. Neil Fleming created the questionnaire in 1987. It was the first of its kind with helpsheets that provide learning strategies for the users. The learning preferences identified indicate the ways an individual prefers to receive and disseminate information. “It has helped people understand each other and assists them to learn more effectively in many situations.” (http://www.vark-learn.com). Today, over 1 million people take the questionnaire annually (http://www.vark-learn.com). Some have questions regarding the validity of the questionnaire as it does have its limitations. For instance, since it is a multiple-choice questionnaire simulating decision-making using several preferences, it is difficult to statistically analyze. Also, “VARK has little to say about personality, motivation, social preferences, physical environments, or introversion-extraversion” (http://www.vark-learn.com). It is skewed by those who enjoy answering questions on-line. Despite the above information, a study conducted by “Dr. Walter Leite from the Research and Evaluation Methodology program at the University of Florida” found that its reliability was adequate (http://www.vark-learn.com). Reports of self-perception also support the accuracy of VARK (http://www.vark-learn.com). VARK stands for visual, aural, read/write,......

...VARK Analysis Paper Oleksandra Vasylchenko GCU Oct.11, 2015 NRS-429V VARK Analysis Paper The VARK questionnaire was designed by Neil Fleming to help people understand their learning styles; suggested categories include: visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic learning (Carlson, 2015). Questionnaire consists of sixteen questions, and one can select more than one answer to best explain his/her preferences. When answered truthfully, results will give a snap shot summary of one’s particular learning style. When the writer completed the questionnaire, the results revealed that she has a multimodal learning preference, read / write, kinesthetic. The paper will further discuss how writers preferred learning strategies compare to her questionnaire results, as well as how awareness of individual learning strategies affects teaching and learning. Four different modalities were identified to reflect experiences of students and teachers, and some could definitely overlap. Visual preference uses maps, charts, graphs, diagrams, symbols, hierarchies and other devices to represent what could have been expressed in words, and some are able to learn information better when it is presented in such way. Aural preference learners learn best from lectures, group discussions, email, phone conversations, saying things out loud to self, anything that is “heard or spoken”. Read/write preference is for information that is presented in form of words. This mode is preferred by majority of......

...under which a student is most likely to learn”. It’s not what you learn; it’s how you learn it. Anybody who does the VARK questionnaire can get to know his or her learning preferences. Visual, auditory, read/write and kinesthetic are the four learning categories identified through VARK. After doing this questionnaire, those with poor learning skills can improve themselves by knowing their learning style. You can then stick on with or improve the modes you desire and let alone those that you do not like. VARK analysis of yourself and others can be a helpful device for better understanding and communication at workplace and home. The VARK questionnaire results proved that I have an aural learning preference (score-12). In auditory learning style, we better learn by hearing information and talking aloud. I have always been good at group learning, where information’s are verbally passed and learned. Those things that are heard are better remembered. Mind reading is difficult for them. Lectures and discussions are often their best venue for learning, where lots of materials are delivered in a short time. Reading aloud any written material or verbal repetition of words helps to stick them in mind. Auditory learners would score best in oral exams and will be good orators or spokespersons. Class notes are often poor; the spaces left are subsequently filled by collecting notes from textbooks or discussing with friends. VARK questionnaire showed that I have a good preference for......

...VARK Analysis Paper In this paper, the VARK Questionnaire will be explored as it relates to individual learning methods. The VARK questionnaire (Fleming, 2001) was chosen for two reasons, scores can be reached quickly and the provision of help sheets assists students to use their knowledge of learning styles. VARK stands for: visual, aura, read/write and kinesthetic. Fleming and Mills (1992) suggested four modalities that seemed to reflect the experiences of the students and teachers. Through the use of the VARK Questionnaire personal learning styles are predicted and suggestions are made as to which work best for each learner. Depending on the person, there may be one method that works particularly well or a mix of all of the methods may meet your individual needs. Multimodal learning indicates the learner prefers more than one style to retain information. The VARK Questionnaire provides a personal profile based on your results and suggestions to help when taking in new information. The personal learning profile report highlights your individual learning preferences and breaks down each category with suggested methods. Based on the personal learning profile received, it indicated the learner was multimodal. This indicates multiple preferences when taking in new information. The three highlighted preferences received were: Visual, Read/Write and Kinesthetic. Visual, meaning learning through the use of different formats designed to convey information. Diagrams, labeled......

...Styles Learning style is the way an individual learns best. There are several different learning styles, and ways to determine your learning style. VARK is one tool used to determine your learning style or styles. VARK, developed by Neil Fleming in 1987("Learning," n.d.), suggested that there are four different categories of how individuals learn best. Fleming called these modalities. This questionnaire is to help individuals have an idea of their preferences for learning. Preferences may be different than strengths. This questionnaire is about how an individual learns best, not how they behave doing things of leisure. The acronym VARK stands for the four modalities that students learn best by, which is Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic sensory. The two learning styles VARK identified for this student is Aural and Read/write. They had equal numbers. Aural is learning best by hearing and speaking. This can include any form of listening and speaking including email, on the phone, texting, listening to lectures or speakers, discussion. These individuals like to hear the information first, and then talk it out, ask questions, have a discussion. The learning style Read/write is learning best by words, and any form of words. These learners love dictionaries, quotes reports, and power point to name a few. No only do they like lists, they make lists also. They like using manuals. This student found the VARK questionnaire to be extremely correct. The type of learning......

...VARK Analysis Paper Elaine Boyd Grand Canyon University May 24, 2015 VARK Analysis Paper According to the VARK questionnaire the learning strategy that best describes this student’s style is multimodal learning style. Experience has shown this person learning to be strongest in visual and kinesthetic and less in the aural and read/write styles. Amazingly, this corresponds with the results of this questionnaire. Multimodal learning style means that all styles are used to some degree. Many people find they need the same material taught using several of the learning modes to grasp the meaning of the subject being taught. This finding is very accurate looking on past experiences with understanding of written instructions being the most difficult. It is necessary to not only listen to the instructor, take good notes, review notes and recite information out loud to really understand and learn the material provided. Participating in study groups is extremely helpful for many, as not only do you repeat what was discussed in class, but you hear information from another student’s perspective. This information may have been missed or not understood completely. Let’s look at the other different learning styles. First, there is visual, which means you use colors, flowcharts, and pictures to point out important parts. You use symbolism and prefer different arrangements. You like teachers who use hand gestures, posters, slides and graphs. It is advised......

Learning is a goal-directed act and all human beings and living creatures have different learning behaviors and styles. On the other hand, the process of learning is done over a progression of time and usually includes a learning curve that each person will follow. One familiar assessment used to create a person's learning style is the VARK Analysis (Fleming, 2011). VARK is an phrase for visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic learners. This determination is done online and clusters information on how individuals answer a sequence of questions. Educators and students alike will use this tool become better at teaching and the learning process as a whole. At the conclusion of the VARK questionnaire, a learning type based on four categories that will give your preferred learning type. This will give the individual a beginning foundation on how he/she best learns and retains information. ...VARK Analysis Paper Learning styles are the different views and ways of learning. In 1970, the idea of individualized learning styles started. In 1987, Neil Fleming designed the VARK learning model with Colleen Mills the co-author. ("VARK," 2011, p. 1)Fleming VARK model of learning is one of the commonly used learning styles which developed upon old Neuro linguistic programming models. This model is combined of four strategies which are Visual, Aural, Read/write and Kinesthetic. It contains sixteen questions that include many dimensions. In November 2010, VARK improvised the new version of a book which is entitled How Do I Learn Best. This book is very simple and is not confusing or having many classifications. To support the questions and learning strategies, Neil Fleming and Charles Bonwell developed this book on website which will help students to understand the strategies they should use for learning. (Fleming, 2002, p. 1) The individual can compare and change the way of study habits by checking the preferred learning strategies with this model. Multimodal Learning Style The most commonly used method of learning is the multimodal style of learning. According to Fleming, one third of questionnaire scores are combined of all four modalities and other greater parts are in three and two part modalities. There are two groups in the learning strategy of multimodal approach. One group switches their preferences easily. They may choose the mode that best fits...
