Vegetarianism is a big topic nowadays. Many people are for it, but some think that it has no point at all. Being a vegetarian, I have a big opinion on this topic. There are many benefits to being a vegetarian. For example, they usually eat healthier, have better medical benefits, and show more compassion towards animals. If you ask me, these are good reasons to become a vegetarian. Have you ever stopped to think about if what you are eating is healthy or not? Well, usually, the meat people eat is extremley unhealthy. Vegetarians who eat their fruits and vegetables consume more vitamin C, vitamin E, phytochemicals, which helps fight off desiese, and many more. Some of the meats, like red meat, have people fooled. Those who eat red meat, have a better chance of getting heart desiese, cancer, and having strokes, but many think that it is healthy for you simply because it has protein. There are numerous things that you do not know about the meats you eat. One thing that scares me about meat, is you never know what was fed to the animal, and exactly what part you are eating.. For example, McDonald's chicken nuggest are a big thing. Do you know how they are made? They completley grind the chicken, then make the nuggets out of the meat and who knows what else. In addition, many slaughter houses feed their animals steroids and antibiotics to make them grow at a faster pace. When we eat those animals, we are eating the medication fed to them. These medications are not ment for us to consume so when we eat too much of it, which most people do, it causes desieses. I think we should try to find new, healthier ways to get our protein. "If Slaughter houses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian." What Paul McCartney ment by this was, if everyone could see what happened to animals before, and while they're in the slaughter houses, nobody would

...A vegetarian is a person who does not eat meat or fish, and sometimes other animal products. In most cases people become vegetarians because of: moral, religious, or health reasons. Usually people become vegetarians above the age of 20, this is when you realise and take interest what goes into your body and how it can affect you. Some people are born into vegetarianism because of religious reasons or family preferences. In a religious point of view, most people think that it is unfair to take the life of a living thing and eat the flesh of it. In my opinion I think that, everyone should become a vegetarian and not slaughter them for the satisfaction of the taste of their flesh on their mouth. They are loving things too, most animals do not even feel the sunlight and the grass on their bodies until they are taken out of the rows of their animal and are taken to the slaughter house. Over 56 billion farmed animals are killed every year by humans. More than 3,000 animals die every second in slaughterhouses around the world. ...5 types of vegetarian The vegan This is the most limiting type of vegetarian diet. Vegans not only eliminate all animal-based foods but avoid dairy products of all types as well as eggs. While generally considered to be a healthy diet in terms of preventing disease, it takes planning to get enough protein, iron, and calcium on a vegan diet, although it’s not impossible. Many people start out with less restrictive form of vegetarianism and gradually progress to a vegan diet over time.  Lacto-vegetarianism People who adopt a lacto-vegetarian diet abstain from all meat products, including eggs, but continue to eat dairy products. The advantage to this form of vegetarianism is you’re less likely to develop a calcium deficiency due to the inclusion of calcium rich milk products. Lacto-ovo vegetarianism Lacto-ovo vegetarians avoid all meat but allow themselves to eat both dairy products and eggs. The inclusion of eggs and milk makes it easier to maintain calcium and protein levels and is, in general, an easier form of vegetarianism to adapt to, particularly if you eat out a great deal. Have you ever stopped to consider how many baked goods contain eggs and dairy products? Pescatarians One of the least restrictive forms of vegetarianism is the pescatarian lifestyle where you avoid all meat products with the exception of fish. Going Vegetarian

...29 April 2013 Going Vegetarian In today’s fast-paced, modern and practical society people are becoming more health conscious. This includes trying to choose the best available options for a beneficial lifestyle. They are becoming more concerned these days about the increasing health risks of a meat-based diet. On the other hand, others have taken a step further and believed that animal cruelty involved in killing animals and using them for their products is inhumane and should be outlawed. Vegetarianism used to be an unusual lifestyle choice. Today it is becoming more common and accepted by mainstream society. While there are many reasons for choosing a vegetarian diet, the most important are health reasons, environmental and economic reasons, and, above all, ethical reasons. Well as my sustainability project, a lifestyle change that is good for me and good for the planet, I decided to go vegetarian for a week meaning no meat, no gelatin, or fish. I knew I wasn’t going to have any trouble with fish because I don’t like seafood but meat, I didn’t know if I could last a whole week. March 11 was the first day I started the experiment and of course I had no trouble at all since it was the first day. I actually felt really good going into this and … It felt like nothing on the second day also and found myself just getting another César salad. From the looks of it, I thought I might actually be able to do this and accomplish my goal by not eating any meat. But I spoke too...

...and Desadvanges III. Vitamin and minerals IV. How many vegetarian are in the US V. Fames people History The term "vegetarian" was coined by the British Vegetarian Society in the mid-1800. (The Latin root of the word refers to the source of life.) However, vegetarianism itself dates back to a time before recorded history. Many anthropologists believe that most early humans ate mainly plant foods, being more like gatherers than hunters. This view is supported by the fact that the human digestive system resembles that of other plant-eaters rather than that of meat-eaters. The early "human as plant-eater" view is also supported by the fact that humans on meat-based diets contract receive major health problems such as heart disease and cancer much more frequently than people eating vegetarian diets. The Greek mathematician Pythagoras was a vegetarian, and vegetarians were often called Pythagoreans until a different word was created. You’ll ward off disease. Nutrition: Vegetarian

...16, 2014 Becoming a Vegetarian For many years, the decision to follow a vegetarian diet was regarded as a noble but deprived existence at best. As the number of vegetarians has grown, and the range of food available has become wider, it has become clear that most vegetarians enjoy their food a great deal and, what is more, there are possible health benefits associated with vegetarian eating. Perhaps the most obvious benefit of vegetarian eating is the reduced risk of coronary heart disease. Vegetarians tend to have lower levels of cholesterol, reduced clotting factors, lower blood pressure and a lower incidence of diabetes. These reduced risks are because vegetarian diets usually have: Lower saturated fat content, higher fiber content lower salt content, larger amounts of fruit and vegetables, more complex carbohydrates and fewer simple sugars. (Polunin) A study showed that people who ate raw salad/vegetables three to four times a week suffered up to 50% less heart disease and cancer than non-salad eaters. Cancer risk may also lower with a vegetarian diet, particularly cancer of the colon. There is also some evidence that vegetarian diets (or diets with only a small meat content) may reduce the risk of cancer of the breast, pancreas, prostate and kidney. The bad points are the fact that although a carefully planned and varied vegetarian diet can provide all the necessary nutrients. The situation isn't helped by the relatively narrow range of vegetarian foods offered in pubs...

Going Vegetarian

...Going Vegetarian Many people believe that vegetarians aren’t able to find meatless items at restaurants. It may seem to be more difficult, but according to the “Vegetarian Times” eight out of ten restaurants in the United States offer vegetarian choices. Although being a vegetarian can be challenging, the benefits outweigh the burdens. Today, there are many healthy, vegetarian choices in restaurants around the world. For example, apples and yogurt can even be found at McDonalds! “Farmer’s Weekly” says that not only is a vegetarian diet healthy but it also helps cut greenhouse gases, conserve water, and conserve land. Today, many people are trying to become eco-friendly and don’t know what they can do to help. Giving up meat is a healthy choice for you, for the animals, and it could even help solve world hunger. Many people, when they think of becoming vegetarian, wonder how they are going to get enough protein and iron in their diet. According the book, The Case for Vegetarianism, people are mistaken in thinking that protein comes from animals. Protein actually comes from plant food, meaning that all animals get protein through the food they eat. When trying to figure out what foods have protein, whole grains, beans, nuts, eggs, and peas are all high in protein, as well as all dairy products. To be the healthiest, one’s diet should include a variety of whole foods. Excess protein actually puts stress on the liver and kidney and is also linked with calcium...

Mushrooms

...Although mushrooms have at one time been used as a staple food in some parts of Russia and South America, and they have been served as the main dish during mushroom seasons in Africa, they are generally considered only as an ingredient or complement to various dishes-rather than as a daily vegetable. However, mushrooms have been and will be increasing in importance as a source of food because they have a pleasing flavor, fine texture, adequate protein content (Crisan and Sands 1978), and health benefits (Mori 1974). The demand for mushrooms in some industrialized countries has increased threefold during the period 1965-1975 (Delcaire 1978). As people become wealthier, their consumption of mush-rooms increases. In 1977, the total per capita consumption of Agaricus mush-rooms in West Germany was about 12 times that of the world average. It is hoped that in the near future mushrooms can be cultivated widely just as other common vegetables are. WHAT ARE MUSHROOMS? I'M Not a Vegetarian

...I'm Not a Vegetarian! But . . . Should the Animals Eaten Have Rights? Oh, no! That steak is from a living animal that breathes the same air as humans. Should this animal have to be killed and butchered to become something humans use for survival? All living beings should have certain rights, correct? The answer is a profound . . . yes, and no. Animals have been eaten for billions of years in order to sustain the human race. That will never change. For example, a hunter will go out on an early Saturday morning just when the sun is rising to look for a deer to kill so the family will have meat to eat. After a period of time, several deer are spotted fifty yards away in a clearing. With careful aim, a single shot is placed directly behind a deer’s shoulder that results in, dinner for the evening. Even though animals must be killed in order to supply the humans with meat . . . they should have certain rights prior to their demise. Animal abuse in slaughterhouses is caused by trying to process more animals than the slaughterhouses can handle in order to maximize profits, along with using outdated processing methods with under maintained equipment; however, this problem can be solved by incorporating well maintained up-to-date processing equipment and better internal quality controls. Looking back, as reported by Farm Forward, n.d.: In the last 70 years—a tiny blip in the history of farming—cruel, unsustainable factory farms have grown to the point where they produce...
