Velma As A Role Model

Lazy weekend days that begin at 12 and end at 2am always start with morning cartoons, especially if you were young enough to experience the golden age of Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel. Hours could slip by quietly, as pancakes cooled on a breakfast tray in front of the TV while I would laugh and holler as Tom and Jerry slapped each other with frying pans and Sheen on Jimmy Neutron explained his intense love for Ultra Lord. The shows I watched as a child shaped the way I behaved; from being harsh and mean like Sam on iCarly, to embracing my quirks like Harper from Wizards of Waverly Place, to developing a strange sense of humor like Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants. Through the years, I have watched a great number of …show more content…
For Velma Dinkley, referred to as the brains of the gang, this is just the opposite. Due to a perfect memory and calculating mind, she solves a majority of the mysteries by herself, figuring out what each of the obscure clues mean to fit the pieces of the puzzle together and understand how and why the villain did it. Velma has always been my role model, I’ve always wanted to solve mysteries, travel the country in a van with my best friends, and complete the epic adventuring aesthetic everyone my age wants to achieve. The main reason Velma is my role model is that she does not put in the effort to hide who she is. Sometimes, teenagers attempt to pretend that they are dumb because they are afraid of getting ridiculed for being smart. Velma never does this, in every edition of the show she is unapologetically smart and refuses to be someone she is not for praise or friendships. She is a person who always strives to be the best she can be, and as I have watched the show, I try to prove to people that everything I do is to the best of ability. I try my best not to slack and I always mean well when I fail, because my shortcomings show that I did my best to face the challenge head on and will do so until I succeed. Overall, I have always strived to show people I am smart and capable, just as Velma …show more content…
does that effortlessly. Every single episode of Scooby Doo, in every single version and in every single movie, Shaggy is too terrified to do anything but run. In this day in age, when discussing fight or flight reactions, the fight aspect is revered. A person who chooses to fight in the heat of battle instead of running away is a hero. They represent everything a person should strive to be, and if you prefer to preserve yourself and move as fast as you possibly can, you’re a pushover, a coward. Shaggy gives those who flight instead of fight, hope. He shows that it is alright to be afraid of things; that not everyone has to be brave all the time. The writers of the show consistently prove this, especially when Shaggy embraces his preference to sit out on the sidelines with a playful quip about how petrified he is and how he would prefer to be in the food court. There are also times where Shaggy decides he must be brave in order to save something he is passionate about, such as baseball or mini-golf. This audacious mix of fear and bravery makes Shaggy such an interesting and important character because he shows viewers that being brave is not necessary to make it in this world, and you need only be bold when it is for a cause you care

Blacks & Interracial Relationships of Marriage, Dating

...Head, Tom “Interracial Marriage Laws; A Short Timeline History” Web. http://www.civilliberty.about.com/od/raceequalopportunity/t p/Interracial-Marriage-Laws-History-Timeline.htm This article is an interesting history of regulations regarding interracial relationships and marriages. The United States and its Colonial processors had banned miscegenation centuries ago to prevent mixing of races. In 1667 the first British laws was passed in Maryland to prohibit marriage between Whites and slaves. It also mandated enslavement of any White woman who marries a black man. In 1691 Commonwealth of Virginia bans all interracial marriages and if a White marries a person of color, he or she would be exiled. Maryland soon followed suit. In 1780, Pennsylvania repealed such laws to gradually abolish slavery. in 1843 Massachusetts became second state to repeal miscegenation laws. In 1883, “Pace v. Alabama”, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously rules that state-level bans on interracial marriage do not violate the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. constitution. The ruling held for more than 80 years. In 1922, Congress passed the Cable Act, which prohibited marriages between Whites and Blacks and Whites and Asians. In 1964, “McLaughlin Vs Florida” Supreme Court rules that bans on interracial marriages violates 14th amendments. Finally in 1976, Loving Vs Virginia, the Supreme Court unanimously overturned “Pace Vs Alabama”. In 2000 Alabama became the last state to lift this ban. Judice, Cheryl...

Hershey Food Corporation

...HERSHEY FOODS CORPORATION: BITTER TIMES IN A SWEET PLACE Teaching Note Synopsis and Objectives The proposed sale of Hershey Foods Corporation (HFC) during the summer of 2002 captured headlines and imaginations. After all, Hershey was an American icon, and when the company’s largest shareholder, the Hershey Trust Company (HSY), asked HFC management to explore a sale, the story drew national and international attention. The company’s unusual governance structure put the Hershey Trust’s board in the difficult position of making both an economic and a governance decision. On the one hand, the board faced a challenging economic decision that centered on determining whether the solicited bids provided a fair premium for HFC shareholders. On the other hand, the governance decision required the board to balance its fiduciary responsibility against the original mandate of Milton Hershey to support the Hershey School in perpetuity. The fiduciary responsibility is relatively simple compared with satisfying a broad array of constituents, including the Hershey community, HFC employees, and Pennsylvania’s attorney general. In addition to this teaching note, we provide a variety of teaching supplements to support a discussion of the complex issues presented by the case: • Video footage of the Hershey community and key players in the case • Excel spreadsheets for key case exhibits • Excel spreadsheets for key teaching-note exhibits • Projection-ready...

Blink - the Power of Thinking Without Thinking

...ALSO BY MALCOLM GLADWELL The Tipping Point To my parents, Joyce and Graham Gladwell Introduction The Statue That Didn’t Look Right In September of 1983, an art dealer by the name of Gianfranco Becchina approached the J. Paul Getty Museum in California. He had in his possession, he said, a marble statue dating from the sixth century BC. It was what is known as a kouros—a sculpture of a nude male youth standing with his left leg forward and his arms at his sides. There are only about two hundred kouroi in existence, and most have been recovered badly damaged or in fragments from grave sites or archeological digs. But this one was almost perfectly preserved. It stood close to seven feet tall. It had a kind of light-colored glow that set it apart from other ancient works. It was an extraordinary find. Becchina’s asking price was just under $10 million. The Getty moved cautiously. It took the kouros on loan and began a thorough investigation. Was the statue consistent with other known kouroi? The answer appeared to be yes. The style of the sculpture seemed reminiscent of the Anavyssos kouros in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, meaning that it seemed to fit with a particular time and place. Where and when had the statue been found? No one knew precisely, but Becchina gave the Getty’s legal department a sheaf of documents relating to its more recent history. The kouros, the records stated, had been in the private collection of a Swiss physician named Lauffenberger...
