Insecticidal Activity of Aloe Vera

... physiological resistance, its increased toxicity to non-target organisms and high costs are noteworthy (WHO, 1981). Recently, stress is being laid on eco-friendly means of vector management. These include the use of natural products of plant origin as an alternative approach for mosquito control. The use of different parts of locally available plants and their various products in the control of mosquitoes has been well established globally by numerous researchers (Subramaniam, et al., 2012). Traditionally, plants and their derivatives were used to kill mosquitoes and other household and agricultural pests. In all probability, these plants used to control insects contain insecticidal phytochemicals that are predominantly secondary compounds produced by plants to protect themselves against herbivorous insects (Shaalan et al., 2005; Preeti Sharma et al., 2009). The use of these plant-derived insecticides are generally pest specific, readily biodegradable and usually lack toxicity to higher animals and non-target organism (Bowers 1992).Consequently, use of these botanical derivatives in mosquito control instead of synthetic insecticides could reduce the cost and environmental pollution. Aloe vera is a perennial plant belonging to the family of Liliaceae, of which there are about 360 species (Klein and Penneys, 1988). Taxonomists now refer to Aloe barbadensis as A. vera (Coats and Ahola, 1979). Aloe is one of the few medicinal plants that maintain its popularity for a long......

Vera Drake

...Vera Drake lives with her husband Stan and her two grown children Ethel and Sid. Vera is a domestic who cleans the house of a rich woman. She has a good heart and cheerful even though she got plenty of work to do, and a lot of people to take care of and help women in need, as she calls it. Vera has her big secrete that has no one in her family knows, and a secret that she intends to keep secret. When she says “Help Women In Need” she means to help poor pregnant women who are not willing or not be able to give birth to a child. Because abortion was not legal in England in the year 1950’s.Vera’s secret comes to an end after one of the girls she treated gets sick and the police get involved. This film does not only show how abortion works but it also tells us the story of the one who performs the abortion. Vera Drake was of pure good and it was never her intention ever to do abortion for her own benefit, but she was only thinking of how a poor pregnant woman would raise a child if they were born. This movie also comes with moral values and an ethical question to be considered like is Abortion really a murder? Did Vera commit a serious crime? Or should Vera be put in jail, if her own intention was to help hose poor pregnant women? As I finished watching this film, I tend to get sympathy with Vera, since she was such a caring and loving woman....

Vera’s wealthy upbringing largely influenced her view on fashion. Her mother was very stylish and would take Vera to Paris fashion shows during her childhood. Vera states that her mother, “absolutely loved fashion” and “I had a mother that was superbly chic. She made fashion this adventure for me as a young woman. She viewed fashion not as superficial but as expressive.” (Zimbalist, 2007) Vera explains that from her mother she, “got a first class education with style, and quality, and exposure to European houses, and the kind of education that sometimes you can’t even get in school.” (MOVIE) Her wealthy upbringing allowed her to attend prestigious schools, including Chapin, a private school in Manhattan. It also allowed Vera to become involved in her passion, the sport of figure skating. Vera was a competitive figure skater until the age of 20, with the dream of becoming an Olympic skater. Unfortunately however, Vera failed to qualify for the 1968 Olympic team, calling it “heartbreaking”. (MOVIE) Moving past this disappointment, Vera enrolled in Sarah Lawrence College in New York. The Feasibility of Aloe Vera as Lipbalm

...ntroduction The Aloe vera plant has been known and used for centuries for its health, beauty, medicinal and skin care properties. The name Aloe vera derives from the Arabic word “Alloeh” meaning “shining bitter substance,” while “vera” in Latin means “true.” 2000 years ago, the Greek scientists regarded Aloe vera as the universal panacea. The Egyptians called Aloe “the plant of immortality.” Today, the Aloe vera plant has been used for various purposes in dermatology. History Aloe vera has been used for medicinal purposes in several cultures for millennia: Greece, Egypt, India, Mexico, Japan and China.1 Egyptian queens Nefertiti and Cleopatra used it as part of their regular beauty regimes. Alexander the Great, and Christopher Columbus used it to treat soldiers’ wounds. The first reference to Aloe vera in English was a translation by John Goodyew in A.D. 1655 of Dioscorides’ Medical treatise De Materia Medica.2 By the early 1800s, Aloe vera was in use as a laxative in the United States, but in the mid-1930s, a turning point occurred when it was successfully used to treat chronic and severe radiation dermatitis.2 Plant The botanical name of Aloe vera is Aloe barbadensis miller. It belongs to Asphodelaceae (Liliaceae) family, and is a shrubby or arborescent, perennial, xerophytic, succulent, pea- green color plant. Many believe that all the parts of an aloe vera can cure different illnesses. It is widely use for its medicinal content. It is also widely use as hair wash to prevent falling hair and baldness. Bromodosis (smelly feet) is one of the problems of the office workers and also students. It is a common problem caused by build-up of sweat. ...Written Case #1: Vera Bradley in 2014: Will the Company’s Strategy Reverse Its Downward Trend? LUICELENA PEREZ – CWID: 11493487 GBA 490-006 Dr. Marino 3/01/2016 Thirty-four years ago in the Hartsfield Atlanta Airport, Patricia Miller and Barbara Bradley noticed that the majority of people had the same simple and boring luggage design. These two friends saw the opportunity to pursue a new market that offers colorful and patterned baggage designs, and that is how Vera Bradley began. Vera Bradley started producing colorful and unique pattered designs for luggage, bags, sports bags and handbags; and after the success of the first product line and their economic growth, they decide to expand, creating new products such as: wallets, purses, computer and cell covers, scarves, beach accessories, lunch bags and jewelry. The company growth was consistent until 2014 when the revenue of the company fell by 1% and the net income decreased around 15%. The customer traffic was declining and new customers were not buying Vera Bradley’s products anymore. After analyzing competitors, the industry, and the internal situation of the company, there are some recommendations that I would like to develop more in-depth to add those into a new strategic plan that can actually generate profit for Vera Bradley. RECOMMENDATIONS Recommendation 1: Decrease production of certain products on the existing line to have a limited amount of...
