Sampa Video Case

...Sampa Video Solution Discussion Sampa Video Case This case is useful for illustrating how we do NPV analysis when cash flows are risky, illustrating the idea of a terminal value, and also for thinking about what kinds of advantages make for positive NPV projects. The case discusses Sampa Video, the second largest chain of video rental stores in the greater Boston area, and their consideration of an expansion into an online market. What we have to do is evaluate the decision. Sampa Video – History Sampa began as a small store in Harvard Square catering mostly to students. The company expanded quickly, largely due to its reputation for customer service and its extensive selection of foreign and independent films. In March of 2001 Sampa was considering entering into the business of home delivery of videos. This follows on the heals of rumors of similar considerations by Blockbuster and the appearance of internet based competitors (Kramer.com and CityRetrieve.com). Expectations The project was expected to increase its annual revenue growth rate from 5% to 10% a year over the next 5 years. Subsequent to this, the free cash flow from the home delivery unit was expected to grow at the same 5% rate that was typical of the video rental industry as a whole. Up-front investment required for delivery vehicles, developing the necessary website, and marketing efforts were expected to run $1.5 M. Video Case #1

...Stephanie Dunfee Article Summary 1 May 27, 2015 Video Case #1 – Chobani: Making Greek Yogurt a Household Name 1. Hamdi Ulukaya identified residents of Long Island, New York first for his first cups of Greek yogurt. The first cups were placed on shelves of a small grocery store in 2007. He focused on the “4Ps” to promote his yogurt. The first P was his product strategy. Ulukaya hired a yogurt master to help him develop Chobani. The product strategy focused on the actual product and packaging that product appropriately. The product undergoes an authentic straining process that removes excess liquid whey, resulting in a thicker, creamier yogurt with 13-18 grams of protein per single-serve cup. Chobani is higher in protein than regular yogurt, made with real fruit and only natural ingredients and preservative free. It does not contain any artificial flavors or sweeteners, but does contain five live and active cultures, including probiotics. As far as packaging, Ulukaya wanted a European style cup with a circular opening exactly 95 millimeters across. This shorter, wider cup is more visible on store shelves. In addition, he chose shrunk-on plastic sleeves with bright colors. Ulukaya’s price strategy involved approaching retailers directly rather than utilizing distributors. Prices were set high enough to recover costs and give reasonable margins to retailers, but not so high that they could be undercut. Ulukaya’s place strategy proved to be an extremely smart move. He worked...

Starbucks Video Case

...Starbucks Video Case 1. There are many benefits of mobile payment systems in terms of situational influences and level of involvement. By substantially reducing the amount of time and effort required to pay for the goods, the system can increase the rate at which customers are served, shortening lines and reducing the number of employee hours spent running cards and making change. Mobile payment systems make the physical presence of cash and credit cards unnecessary, allowing for more impulse purchases and reducing the likelihood that an otherwise loyal customer will pass up the opportunity to make a purchase just because they forgot their wallet. These systems also reduce the cost of fees imposed by credit card companies on consumers and merchants, by reducing the number of small transactions (where the fee required to use a card may exceed the actual price of the item). 2. With their purchase of Evolution Fresh, Starbucks is addressing increased consumer demand for products that are viewed as being part of a “healthier lifestyle” (text). Consumers are looking for fresher, all-natural foods and are willing to pay a higher price for them, satisfying their esteem needs by getting a product that is viewed as superior to basic fast food. Also, by tying itself to the makers of a premium product, Starbucks is solidifying consumers’ perception of it as a retailer of premium food and juice, allowing it to move beyond its original coffee-centered business. 3. Starbucks...

Video Case Study

...During the first video I learned that there are three types of server virtualization each distinctively different from one another. The first type of server virtualization is virtualization (the most basic type). Virtualization uses software called a hypervisor which interacts directly with the physical server’s CPU and disk space. The hypervisor allow different operating systems to run at the same time and keeps each virtual server completely independent and unaware of the other virtual servers operating on the physical server. Additionally the hypervisor monitors and relay resources from the physical server to the appropriate virtual server. The second type of server virtualization is paravirtualization. Paravirtualization technique differs from virtualization technique in that a paravirtualizaton system is aware of one another. A paravirtualization hypervisor doesn’t require much processing power to manage an operating system because each operating system is already aware of the demands the other operating systems are placing on the physical server. The third type of server virtualization is OS level virtualization. The OS level virtualization system does not use a hypervisor. Instead the virtualization is part of the operating system and it performs all the functions of a virtualization hypervisor. Because the virtualization is part of the operating system all servers must run the same operating system. Each virtual server remains independent of one another, but you can’t...

Toms Video Case

...I think that TOMS is successful because of both their unique products and their approach to social responsibility. While their unique products may attract many customers, I believe that their approach to social responsibility may have more of an impact because it makes people emotionally attached to the brand instead of just physically attached. Social responsibility refers to an organization's obligation to maximize its positive impact while minimizing its negative impact on society and that is exactly what they have been achieving. Some people buy the brand because of the style but their willingness to spend will be increased because of the psychological and social forces of helping others in need. TOMS manages its supply chain to ensure ethical and social responsibility within its cooperation. TOMS works closely with local humanitarian organizations. Mostly they show this as well by setting manufacturing standards based upon International Labor Organization standards for its manufacturers. They regularly perform audits to make sure that the factories are complying with these standards. TOMS also is creating a strong organizational relationship with its employees and volunteers. TOMS uses factories within China, Argentina, and Ethiopia for manufacturing. This makes room for them to not be ethically responsible if these factories are not carefully managed like they are. TOMS business model relates to the understanding of stakeholders and strategic philanthropy. Strategic...
