History Starting in the 15th century, Europeans such as the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French started appearing in Vietnam. In 1787, French influence became dominant and in 1802, the French helped Vietnam became unified under Emperor Gialong. His successors prosecuted Christian missionaries and, in turn, the French took over. (Compton’s 319) Before the late 1800’s, Vietnam was an agricultural society where majority of the Vietnamese population lived in villages and farmed the land. The oldest male was head of the family, and his oldest son was the second most important family member. There has been a socialist society as form of government since 1992. The Communist Party of Vietnam imposes an independent, equitable and civilized society. It works under the supervision of the only legislative house, the National Assembly. The CVP aims “to realize socialism and ultimately, communism (Socialist, par.7).” In 1980, Vietnam adapted to French Civil law in which Canada agrees on the same value: the accused party should be determined guilty or innocent by fair and impartial means. They should be assigned an appropriate punishment and be treated innocent until proven guilty. Vietnam is becoming the second largest clothing supplier to the United States as they’re becoming a major manufacturing centre. Some of their main exports include rice, coffee, and petroleum and fish, even though there is a “long running territorial dispute with China over parts of South China Sea” (Profile, sec. overview) where these two materials are densely found. They are also advancing in information technology, even though vast majority of the population still depends on agriculture.
