People say that it is never too late to learn a language. As much as I believe that to be true, I still say that it is difficult to be even learn or be taught another language. Before I realized my lack of understanding the Vietnamese language, I have already started to expand, polish, and improve my English, especially since the United States is centered on English. Although Vietnamese is my native language, I do not know it very well, and I have struggled for as long as I can remember with the language barrier between other fluent Vietnamese speakers, but I will be able to be proficient in it through the resources I have available through dedication.
I have received questions like, “Have you taken Vietnamese classes?” and “Do you speak Vietnamese?” thousands of times. To answer the former question, I think it should be a no-brainer. I have taken classes, like I am required to by younger, and I had to go to these classes my parents. My parents made it a priority for me to learn Vietnamese when I was for one day every week during the school year, practically forced against my will, and I hated it with a passion and was not dedicated to learning the language. But that hatred towards having to forcibly going to school in order to learn Vietnamese slowly turned to regret …show more content…
But if I could be able to talk to my parents, how am I not capable of speaking well? For starters, not only did I dislike going to the classes when I was younger, but I also actually loathed the language. The people in my surroundings were mainly Spanish speakers, which is ironic because the area has a massive Vietnamese population. I did not know any other Vietnamese speakers other than my family, and I was self-conscious in public speaking in a foreign language, as if I was an alien. I was more comfortable with English, and as a result, I lost the dialect and accent due to it being a pitch

Doing Business in Vietnam

... • Vietnam is a true emerging market, offering ground floor and growing opportunities for U.S. exporters and investors. Vietnam’s economic growth rate has been among the highest in the world in recent years, expanding annually at 7-8.5 percent, while industrial production has been growing at around 14-15 percent per year. Vietnam’s macroeconomic challenges and the global financial crisis dampened this growth in 2008 and will continue to do so in 2009. • In response to significant macroeconomic challenges, including high inflation and a large and growing current account deficit, the Government of Vietnam (GVN) implemented a series of fiscal and monetary tightening measures in 2008 that were effective in stabilizing the Vietnamese Dong, cutting the trade deficit, and slowing inflation. As these measures were taking hold, the global economic outlook worsened in the fall of 2008. As a result, Vietnam now expects 6.5 percent GDP growth in 2009, but many economists...

Vietnam

...Humanities Task Vietnam is a country in Southeast Asia and the labour force is cheap in this country, some companies opened factories and hire a lot of factories in Vietnam. For example: Nike is one of the well-known global brand in the world and this company didn’t produce their product by themselves. They employ many Vietnamese to produce their product. This company pay the salary to the factories and this company export the produce to other. The benefit is the Vietnamese factories accept those salary and they should pay the taxes to the government. The government accept those taxes and those taxes can help Vietnam develop, because those taxes can be use for build new school, develop the environment and it can also improve the skill of medical treatment . The other benefit is when some companies open the factories, there would be some advanced technology in those companies so some local companies can imitate those technology. The third benefit is the companies can provide many jobs to Vietnamese who didn’t have job before. ! There were also some negatives to the Vietnam, the factories maybe could not earn the higher salary and the company maybe use the resource in Vietnam. The most negative thing I think is some factories maybe polluted the environment in Vietnam, because produce some product, it also produce some rubbish, so if the factories just throw them in to the river or some area and didn’t clean them, it will be harm the environment.! If some companies...

...The third issue is that we have to commit to give Vietnamese employees the right of forming association. Employees can gather themselves to talk to employers and to help each other in the hours of need. The right of forming association is one of the rights given by The Creator to people who are able to work and go to work to defend themselves. This is one of the standard regulations by ILO in which Vietnam is one member. This is also a universal norm in the civilized social life. In the past BTA negotiation with the US, Vietnam had been insisting the US on giving it the GSP which stated the condition of applying zero tax on some thousand of goods imported to the US which mainly were art and craft products, sedges, etc. The US remained its firm in rejection as its GSP law claims some strict requirements including the right of forming association. In the final negotiation round and in the private meeting of the two delegation leaders, “We shall just write on the BTA that the US will consider giving Vietnam the GSP, yet when the consideration starts, whether we get it or not we’ll talk later”, I said to Mr. Joe Damond – leader of the US negotiation delegation. He found the suggestion sensible and he agreed. Returning to our country, I dared not boast about that win because I knew it was just words pleasing BTA so that everybody was happy, but someone reported that we had been patient in fighting and making the US give us the GSP and we won! I heard that later on, after many years...

...Vietnam officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Nha Trang is Vietnam’s most popular seaside resort town located along the second most beautiful bays in the country. It features beautiful beaches with fine and clean sand and clear ocean water with mild temperatures. The city has about 300,000 inhabitants and is more lively and urban in character than other beach destinations like Mui Ne and Phu Quoc. It’s also the scuba diving center of Vietnam. The Cu Chi Tunnels are an immense network of connecting underground tunnels located about 40 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). The tunnels were used by Viet Cong guerrillas as hiding spots during the Vietnam War, and were the base of operations for the Tết Offensive in 1968. The tunnels have become a popular tourist attraction, and visitors are invited to crawl around in the safer parts of the tunnel system. The Mekong Delta is the region in southern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea. It is a very rich and lush area, covered with rice fields, that produces about half of the total of Vietnam’s agricultural output. The formerly little-inhabited beach south of the fishing village of Mui Ne has seen some serious development in the last 15 years. Due to strong sea breezes it is...

Influency

...culture influence on Vietnamese culture Each country in this world has its own unique culture, but due to the worldwide domination of the Western countries, which are famous for their unique types of entertainment, their fashionable clothes, and their delicious dishes, most cultures are affected significantly, including Viet Nam. Since Viet Nam became independent country, the government tried their best to develop the country by opening for foreigner’s investment. Therefore, the economy and the education in Viet Nam have been improved dramatically and obviously have been affected by foreign culture. Nowadays, Western culture has influenced my country in four main aspects, which are fashion, education, architecture and lifestyle. Firstly, style in fashion of the West becomes more popular than Vietnamese traditional clothes. In the past, Vietnamese people always had to wear traditional apparel even if it is formal occasions or not. Nowadays, because of the convenience and the comfort of Western clothes, Vietnamese people prefer to wear it daily. They bring many changes to Vietnamese’s viewpoint of fashion and shorten the usage of traditional clothes. These kinds of clothes make the dressing style of Vietnamese people more fashionable and lose its unique points. However, traditional costumes of the native people, which still be remained in their core, always be worn in special occasions such as Tet holiday and Independent day. Therefore, the next Vietnamese generations should...

American Understand About Vietnam Culture

...1 AMERICANS DOING BUSINESS IN VIETNAM: COMMUNICATION DIFFERENCES by Katrine Syppli Kohl COM 9656: International Business Communication Fall 2007 This paper focuses on differences that are likely to cause problems for U.S. American managers operating in Vietnam. At first, Hofstede’s cultural dimensions of power distance, individualism, and longterm orientation are used to pinpoint key differences in Vietnamese and American business culture (Hofstede, 2001). Second, stable and transitional concepts of culture are delineated as they apply to the topic. Finally, areas of communication are discussed that benefit from special attention because of differences between Vietnamese and American culture. Value Dimensions Hofstede’s original cultural dimensions were power distance (PDI), individualism (IDV), masculinity (MAS), and uncertainty avoidance (UAI); later, long-term orientation (LTO) was added as a fifth dimension (2001). When comparing the United States with Vietnam, the three dimensions of power distance, individualism, and long-term orientation differ most significantly (see Figure 1). Figure 1. Comparison of value orientations: United States versus Vietnam (ITIM International, 2003). Power-distance according to Adler and Gundersen (2008) “reflects the extend to which less powerful members of organizations accept an unequal distribution of power” (p. 54). In countries such as Vietnam where high power-distance are paired with a low uncertainty avoidance, employees view their ...

The Vietnamese Americans’ Successful Transition to the United States

...Research Paper for SOC 350 National University 25 November 2012 The Vietnamese Americans’ Successful Transition to the United States Group of Vietnamese immigrants started after 1975 to the United States started after the Vietnam War. Early immigrants were refugee boat people (refers to refugees, illegal immigrants or asylum seekers immigrate in numbers in small boat fleeing persecution or poverty). Forced to flee from their mother country and often drive into poor town neighborhoods, these newcomers have yet managed to establish tough communities in a short amount of time. More than sixty percent of Vietnamese Americans reside in the states of California, Texas, Washington , Florida and Virginia. (Rothenberg 205) As a fairly recent immigrant group, most Vietnamese Americans are either first- or second-generation Americans. They have the lowest division of people with more than one race between the major Asian American groups. As many as one million people who are five years and older speak Vietnamese at home, making it the seventh-most spoken language in the United States. As refugees, Vietnamese Americans have some of the top rates of naturalization in the 2006 American Community Survey, 72% of foreign-born Vietnamese are naturalized US citizens; this collective with the 36% who are born in the United States makes 82% of them United States citizen in total. Nonfiction Reaction Paper

...by Andrew Lam and “Salvation” by Langston Hughes are the two nonfiction stories featured in this reaction paper. Although, the time period in which each story was written is not the same, both of these nonfiction stories share a common theme. The subject of that theme is one where an elder teaches a person younger than themselves, the ways of their ancestors through religion or culture. Misunderstandings bought forth by failed communication is another theme that these two stories have in common. Both themes explain that a profound gap exists between the older and newer generation of people, regardless of the time period each one is in. For instance, in the story, “Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone“, the author writes about a Vietnamese teenager who has to learn the ways of his newfound American culture due to the pressure of his current times. While in the story, “Salvation”, the black American was pressured to follow and believe in Christianity in order to display obedience within his community. Both stories portray different cultural perspectives but they both provide a similar theme when it comes to values that are instilled into the younger generation through the methods used by the older generation. In each of these stories, the author provides a main character as the narrator, who also portrays the author himself. Each author is writing about a conflict that he had experienced in his younger years. Although both of these stories are nonfiction or based on...

Essay

...Title: Foreign culture has negative effect on Vietnamese teenagers.    The life of people is faster. Vietnamese teenagers are forgetting traditional culture. Foreigners are introducing new culture which sometimes is not good for Vietnamese teenagers and it makes traditional culture fade slowly. This essay will examine two reasons why foreign culture has a negative effect on Vietnamese teenagers. First, the most important reason why foreign culture is not good for Vietnamese teenagers is that they prefer food and drink of foreign countries than of Vietnam. It is clear that now Vietnamese teenagers often go out to eat fast food which is not good for their health and very expensive. Besides they do not care for traditional food. For example, Vietnamese teenagers always go out to eat foreign food on holidays and weekends; they do not stay at home to cook with their family. During Tet, eating banh Chung, which is an important food and a tradition of Vietnam, but Teenagers do not obey this tradition. In addition, they try to drink new things which affect them badly. To explain, Vietnam has many bars and restaurants where foreign people use drugs and smoke shisha and Vietnamese teenagers learn and do the same things often.         Another reason why foreign culture affects negatively is that Vietnamese teenagers often learn bad behaviour faster than good behaviour. Therefore, they always change their style to suit their foreign idols. They often listen to music and watch television...
