Strategic Plan: Riordan

A strategic plan is an important part of every company that helps to keep each department focused and to ensure long-term success. Ethics and social responsibility play large roles in strategic planning because these concepts are part of the foundation for the strategy and the strategy has a long-term effect on the company as well as any communities that are under the effect of these decisions. The competitive advantages Riordan possesses and careful analyzing of strategy options are important issues that must be near the forefront of the decision making process. The effect each strategy may have on innovation and sustainability in domestic and international domains will vary greatly, which means this effect will be extremely important when making this decision. Measurement guidelines are another area that will vary greatly between every situation, which can lead to difficulty in displaying the strategy’s effectiveness. Riordan has to tailor the measurement guidelines to the chosen strategy to ensure accurate measurement of effectiveness. Internal dynamics, cultural leadership, and structural leadership are important parts of the company and certain parts of the concepts will be useful in implementing the business strategy. The way these concepts influence business continuity is also under scrutiny and will be adjustable to ensure a strong combination. Riordan also has to choose assessment and feedback controls that will help determine the direction the company will take. Contingency planning is also important because Riordan has to decide on a specific point to consider alterations to the plan or adopting a new strategy. The Need for a Strategic Plan Every company

Virtual Organizations Strategy Paper

...Virtual Organization Strategy Paper Finance for Business/FIN 370 March 18, 2011 Abstract The purpose of this paper is to review a hypothetical organization and outline the options the organization may be faced with when debating the idea of expansion. The organization in question is Huffman Trucking, which is a trucking firm based in Ohio that has established a presence by acquiring five Eastern regional carriers. The company is privately held. The analysis of this organization includes expansion options of an Initial Public Offering, acquiring an organization in the same industry, and merging with another organization. The positive and negative aspects of each option above are reviewed and a conclusion will be drawn as to the next step for that business to take. Virtual Organization Strategy Paper The concept of business expansion offers both promise and peril. The desire of growth for a business must be tempered with the fact of additional uncertainty and risk. Business under normal operating circumstances is perilous. The additional layering of risk in any type of expansion or capital generation cannot only serve to fail in its objective, but also has the possibility to bring the organization to financial ruin. An effective executive must weigh the chance of success with the absolute possibility of failure. Going Public through an IPO An option for Huffman Trucking to consider for expansion of its operations is going public through an initial...

Virtual Organization & Strategy Paper

...Virtual Organization Strategy Paper Kathy Kudler created Kudler Fine Foods in June 1998. The store only took nine months for to reach the break-even point, and at the end of the year, a profit was turned. Within the next five years Kudler Foods was able to expand to three more places and has been very profitable. At this time, Kudler Fine Foods is privately owned but wants to expand. Kudler Fine foods can either chose to go public through an initial public offering, acquire another organization, or merge with another organization. Team C will analyze the three options by using SWOT analysis and give a recommendation of the best way to expand. Strengths of Each Approach An initial public offering (IPO) would allow Kudler Fine Foods to go public and sell stock in the organization. Allowing Kudler Fine Foods to increase marketability, an IPO provides flexibility and the opportunity to raise funds quickly from the sale of stocks. Kudler’s management team will remain in control of the organization but will have a board of directors who oversees management’s decisions and ensures that Kudler acts in the best interest of the shareholders. The exposure of going public could increase the awareness of Kudler Fine Foods and could assist the organization in expanding into new markets (Keown, Martin, Petty, & Scott, 2005). Acquiring an organization allows Kudler Fine Foods to acquire the existing assets of another organization and the existing customer base also. The organization...

Integrative Problems & Virtual Organization Strategy Paper

...Integrative Problems & Virtual Organization Strategy Paper There are mainly three options for expansion when a company is privately held and wants to expand their operation. This paper will discuss three specific options that a privately held company would have if they were to expand. First of those options would be to go public through an IPO or Initial Public Offerings. The second option would be to acquire another organization in the same industry in order to expand the business. The third and final option being to merge with another organization. With all three of these options having strengths and weaknesses, this paper will discuss some of the strengths and weaknesses of each and what opportunities may arise from each approach as well as the threats. Other things that this company may want to consider when looking to expand are the effects of globalization on the company's financial decision as well as the factors that contribute to exchange rate risks. Finally ending the paper with mitigating the exchange rate risk. Going Public through an IPO Taking a business public or better known as participating in an initial public offering is a process where the business is offered to the public by selling stock of the company. In turn, these stocks represent a partial ownership in the company to the individuals that purchase the stock. One common step in deciding whether or not to take a company public it is always best to speak with an IPO consultant to help determine the...

The Importance of Communication in Resolving Team Conflict

...Communication in Resolving Team Conflict John Cathey 50023176 Manuscript Assignment MGT 567.01W: Managing Groups & Teams Abstract Organizations have been creating teams in an effort to improve communications, processes, respond to customers, or develop new processes or services. Conflict within teams is not new nor is it unexpected or always destructive. Organizations are looking at new ways to form teams and technology has increased the ability to form teams from diverse locations. Teams no longer must be formed from a single location, there are now virtual teams. These teams may be made up of members from different time zones or countries. There is also a new form of team to explore, communities of practice, a group of people that share information, insight, tools, and experience about a subject or area of interest (Kerno & Mace, 2010). What types of conflict arise in these types of teams, do managers need to manage the conflict differently, or does conflict affect these teams differently? This paper looks at the types of conflict found in each of these teams as well as the impact conflict can have on team productivity. It is important for those managers responsible for teams understand the impact of conflict and how to successfully manage it to ensure the team meets or exceeds the goals set by the organization. This paper will provide some insight to assist managers with that task. The Importance of Communication in Resolving Team Conflict Managers know...

Generally speaking, working in teams has proved more efficient and effective than in separate departments, although tall structures are still in operation in many industries depending on their competitive environment. Working in teams helps employees make important decisions on their own, instead of relying on an often delayed response from a superior. This increases productivity and flexibility and helps an organization respond faster to opportunities in the environment. Teams also consist of employees from across several departments which allow them to work together more cohesively, increasing interdependence toward common goals. Teams have many more advantages over a tall organizational structure, but this essay will focus more on the types of team structures. The two types of teams here are virtual teams and face to face teams. This essay will compare and contrast the benefits received when interacting with these two mediums in a team environment. It will also highlight any shortfalls between the two forms of team structures...

...ScienceDirect Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences 110 (2014) 1251 – 1261 Contemporary Issues in Business, Management and Education 2013 Virtual teams: opportunities and challenges for e-leaders Snellman Carita Liliana* a Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Business, Leiritie 1, Vantaa 01600, Finland Abstract In the globalized world with crucial technological changes, leaders are facing unforeseen opportunities as well as challenges while striving to reach their objectives. Such changes have led to organizational restructurings and implied rethinking of leadership functions and practices. Changing organizational structures, from traditional hierarchical towards lower and more flexible ones, have made leaders organize work in new ways. Teams account for one new way of organizing work and reaching organizational goals. Likewise, globalized markets have made leaders search for new solutions to meet the needs of customers. In consequence, organizations strive for competitive advantages through downsizing, subcontracting, joint ventures, strategic alliances, and other collaborative and network-based alternatives which are typically facilitated by virtual teams. Virtual teams are geographically and organizationally dispersed teams that function over time zones. Due to such dispersion, physical contact in virtual teams is reduced or lacking altogether which means that collaboration is enabled by IT-solutions such as computerbased communication. This kind...

Role of Ict in Flattening World

...2 ICTs AND GLOBAL WORKING IN A NON-FLAT WORLD Geoff Walsham Judge Business School University of Cambridge Cambridge, U.K. Abstract This paper rejects the hypothesis of Thomas Friedman that ICT-enabled globalization is driving us toward a flat world. Instead, it is argued that the world remains uneven, full of seams, culturally heterogeneous, locally specific, inequitable, not well-integrated and constantly changing. This argument is supported by an analysis of three areas of ICT-enabled global working, namely global software outsourcing, global IS roll-out, and global virtual teams. The paper then builds on these analyses to put forward an agenda for future IS research on ICTs and global working based on three research themes: identity and cross-cultural working; globalization, localization and standardization; and power, knowledge, and control. The paper concludes that the area of ICTs and global working offers the IS field a major research opportunity to make a significant contribution to our understanding of a set of crucial issues in our more globalized world. Flat world, globalization, global software outsourcing, global IS roll-out, global virtual teams, IS research agenda, identity, cross-cultural working, standardization, power, knowledge, control Keywords 1 INTRODUCTION The changes taking place in the global economy, including those in the burgeoning services component, are the subject of much debate by a wide range of commentators including journalists, practitioners...

Web/240 Week 5 Virtual Organization Evaluation

...Abstract The intended purpose of week five’s assignment is for me to evaluate our chosen virtual organization. The virtual organization that was appointed to learning team A was Kudler’s Fine Foods. Within, this paper I will evaluate the selected virtual organization website, and discuss the intended audience for this site as well. I will then go over the design criteria that I created in week two and provide a description of why I selected and considered the ratings for each category to be of importance. Next, I will explain the results of the comparative review I performed on the three similar sites, and provide an appendix of the completed evaluation. A detailed analysis of the assigned virtual organization website will also be explored inside this paper along with a description of the changes I made in my prototype/mockup accompanied by a screenshot image. Lastly, an explanation of how I would use metadata or other promotional tools to promote the redesigned website, followed by a closing explanation of how the website changes will help the virtual organization to become more successful in the future. In today’s society an online presence is the most effective way to reach the masses. Therefore, the way a website is designed is crucial to the success of the company. Websites want to provide a great first impression when prospects want to get to know more about the business, its mission, or the company’s vision. A website must capture ones attention, and be visually appealing...
