Virtual teams 1. Virtual networking is one of the phenomenal innovations of the modern technology. People in different geographical location can now communicate in real time and can access and share important resources as they work as a team. By using and properly coordinating his virtual team, Lockhead Martin was able to leverage on a pool of experienced human resource from all over the world, all working as a team to develop a modern fighter aircraft. The virtual team ensured that the development costs declined as a result of the reduced operational costs such as logistics and communication. By creating a common platform, the virtual team was able to work around a common goal and each member of the team was able to carry out his/her responsibilities without overlap or any incidence of duplication. 2. Virtual teams are important in bringing together people from different geographical locations. However, they pose a few challenges in terms of social-cultural backgrounds. The virtual team may be constituted by people from different cultural or social backgrounds who may differ in terms of ideologies and fail to work as a team. There is also the danger of language barrier which may slow communication or lead to misunderstanding. Technological problems may also arise and interrupt communication and throw the project into jeopardy particularly if the project is time sensitive. 3. To successfully participate in a virtual team, team members should possess basic computer literacy skills. It is not possible to participate in a virtual team if one lacks basic computer skills. The other key requirement that members should exhibit is good communication skills. The information should be clear and precise to avoid any form of misunderstanding. Lastly but equally important, members should understand the task they are doing, they should be adequately prepared in terms of material content and the communication language that they will use in their communication. 4. To effectively participate in a virtual environment, team members need to be trained on skills such as computer literacy and how to use the internet. They should also be taken through communication skills training courses.

Virtual Teams

...According to Skillport Virtual Team Basics, a virtual team is defined as “a group of individuals linked by communication technology to achieve a common goal.” While this particular training session focused on forming and using virtual teams in the work place, virtual teams are also used in other modes, such as in academia. The virtual team may either be in the form of a group project or the team may be an online class. I have not had the opportunity to be on a virtual team while employed, however I have participated on various virtual teams while in undergraduate and graduate school in both group projects and online classes. The advantages and disadvantages for academic and workforce virtual teams are fairly similar; as the advantages of virtual teams include autonomy and independence, self-reliance, and increased productivity and the disadvantages of virtual teams include poor communication between group members and management/professors, poor leadership and management. It is essential that the individuals on the virtual team be disciplined, organized, self-motivated and have good time management skills. Unfortunately, in academia virtual teams as well as workforce virtual teams occasionally are filled with incompetent team members who do not possess these personality traits. However, management within the workforce is usually able to “pick and choose” who they put on a virtual team while professors are unable to perform the same feat....

Communication Norms in Virtual Teams-Top 5 • Be considerate of the recipient of your communication with the same degree of respect for them and their limited resources as you would in a face to face set up. Depending on where in the globe a member is, it costs money and time for each member to participate in the virtual set-up. One should desist from using the resources improperly for instance clogging bandwidth with useless data. • There should be guidelines on running the meeting, returning phone calls, replying emails and format to be used among other tools. Each member contributing should introduce themselves before proceeding, the rest should be on mute until their turn to speak • Ensure brevity especially in E-mails which are meant to inform and alert. The subject should be brief and descriptive to allow for easier follow up and ensure faster response by denoting emails that need urgent attention. Be very professional and clear in any written communication to make up for the loss gestures, tonal variation and facial expressions to emphasize your key message. • Abide by the law in terms of the content and avenue of communication. Pay for the software that allows the teams to function and do not break any laws especially regarding e-mail and privacy policies. • Stick to the objectives of the team....

Over the next few paragaphs we will look at the different types of teams as well as the positive and negative impacts virtual teams place on managers and business employing this model. Different types of Teams Virtual teams have evolved over time, specifically around the types of teams we see being used. Executive or Management Virtual teams are typically made up of managers, each with specific responsibilities over a region or division. The management team I serve on covers 11 states. We each are assigned a multi-state region with virtual employees scattered throughout. My team all live outside of Oklahoma which means 95% of our interactions take place electronically. Virtual Project Teams are created to accomplish a specific task. These teams typically disperse once the project has been completed. Our company utilizes this approach for projects so as to get the most qualified resources aligned. Work teams are made up of groups on individuals accomplishing similar types of functions and have clearly defined membership. Communication in Virtual Team

...Katie M Drinkall (u06a1) Unit 6 Assignment 1 Communication in Virtual Team Capella University September 26, 2013 Communication Communication is the activity of conveying information though the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information by speech, visuals, signals, writings or behaviors (Grosse, 2002). These processes are done over time, culture, and geographic boundaries, while this has become a common practice for organizations and has give rise to the concept of globally dispersed teams known as virtual teams (LaLonde, 2011). Communication is one of the most necessary components of leadership, without communication there would be no teams, nobody would know what their role on the team would be, there would be no procedures to go by for the test, and there would be no launching of a new team, so the team would never actually exists. Communication can be either verbal or nonverbal; there are many ways in which a speaker can present themselves without using any verbal form. This can be done though body language, hand gestures and facial expressions. Since a virtual team does not have the best ability to see all of these forms of nonverbal communication when partaking in a conference call or see the speaker’s body language when they are seated at their desk. While this can prevent a virtual team from being a successful team, it should not be the main reason why a team fails....

This team crossed time zones, distance and organizational boundaries. We were located in two time zones the eastern and central time zone. While we did not cross national borders we had members of our team that were from different companies, there was no denying some cultural differences between those organizations, especially regarding virtual teams. Virtual Team Type This Networked Team of moderate complexity was the combination of a consulting firm, who was responsible for managing the project for the practices, the IT department at the hospital which would complete Super User training and eventually be responsible for supporting the physician practices, and my company who provides the software implementation and training services. These team members were brought together to meet the common goal of implementing a new software within the practices. As members of this team we were to work together as though we were all a part of the great organization supporting the hospitals. This was not a typical implementation....
