1. Most people believe that they consume an inadequate amount of vitamins to sustain a healthy lifestyle or that ingesting an excessive sum of certain vitamins will improve their health and combat certain diseases. However, this is simply not the case. If a person eats an adequate diet, with foods rich in vitamins, which most Americans do, there is no need to take supplements or consume fortified foods. More so, some vitamins if taken in excess can actually be counterproductive and cause health problems. To further understand, once water soluble vitamins are ingested into the body they move directly to the blood stream, where they are able to move freely about. Whereas, fat soluble vitamins must first travel through the lymph then into the blood and can only be transported with the help of protein. More so, the kidneys, which monitor the flow of blood, detect and remove necessary amounts of water soluble vitamins, but sometimes when overconsumption of water soluble vitamins are ingested, a large excess of vitamins are released, which overwhelm the system, creating an adverse effect. Although, fat soluble vitamins stay in the system longer causing more harmful affects when people excessively take them; some water soluble vitamins can still be detrimental to the human system.
Some of the water soluble vitamins that may be toxic when consumed in overabundance are B(6), folate, and vitamin C. When people intake too much B(6) vitamins there can be neurological damage, especially when intakes exceed 2 grams daily for more than 2 months. In regards to folate toxicity, the amplified levels can obscure a B(12) deficiency, which can delay diagnosis of neurological damage.
