Voice vs. Data
• Cell phones- used for voice and data communication over a network of base stations. Where antennas and electronic communication equipment together create a cell in a mobile phone network.
• Landline phone- uses two copper wires must transmit two things: signals and voice. The two wires, usually coated green and red, are the heart of the process that makes the phone work.
• SMS / Text Messaging- Short message services also known as SMS. Text messages are a way to send and receive messages over mobile networks. SMS / text messages can only contain 160 characters. SMS and Text messaging uses data.
• Fax Machines- fax is sent it immediately getting digitized and packaged in secure TCP packets and sent to natural data, secure Network Operations Center (NOC) for final delivery to its destination.
• Pager- A pager is a communications device that receives the messages transmitted from a paging controller. The message is carried by Radio Frequency (RF) energy transmitted by the paging controller.
• VOIP (voice over IP) phone- Analog voice calls are converted into packets of data. The packets travel like any other type of data, such as e-mail, over the public Internet and/or any private Internet Protocol (IP) network. VoIP phones allow us to bypass the phone companies completely, it uses data networks

Voice vs Data

...Assignment 1 - Voice vs. Data • Cell phones uses both voice and data with the use of cell tower to send data from the network to the cell phones. First Generation (1G) phones were known for their voice data. However, when Second Generation (2G) phone were created, they were about to transmit and receive via voice and data networks. Third Generation (3G) and Forth Generation (4G) both transmit and receive via voice and data networks as well. In fact, cell phones are commonly used to transmit via data networks due to people preferring to text/email rather than placing voice calls to one another. • Landline phone use both data and voice networks. Landlines work by transmitting voice and data signals by copper wire through electric pulses. This means landline phones would still work even if there was a blackout or a satellite disturbance, causing interference with mobile phones. • SMS / Text Messaging use data network. Voice vs. Data

...Voice vs. Data In this lesson we talked about seven things to compare the difference between voice and data communication. The first item are cell phones, cell phones are voice and data communications. Cell phones are a mobile device used for voice and data communication over a network of base stations, sites where antennas and electronic communication equipment together create a cell in a mobile phone network. Today mobile phones are used for many other purposes than the standard voice function, which is it primary purposes. Mobile phones are used for text messaging by means of SMS, for sending and receiving videos and photographs by means of MMS and for email and internet services using GPRS. The second was Landline phones, Landline phones are voice communication. Landline telephones serve a variety of functions, even in today’s largely mobile world. Accessibility of landline phones for people with disabilities means that the range of services provided through landline phones to everyone without disabilities is also accessible in some ways that provides equivalent functionality for people with disabilities. There are several accessibility features which are either present in a telephone, or can be added by attachment; these included speakerphone functionality, large keys, flash on incoming calls, ability to connect a Braille reader....

Voice vs. Data

...Cell phones are both voice and data. Voice was the first initiative use for the phone. Then after they have noticed that the cell phone could transfer data, they decided to push the data limitations. That is how we got to 4g today. A landline is voice without a modem. The landline cannot transfer data unless it has a converter called a modem. When this modem is applied the landline then could connect to a computer and transfer data. Sms/text messaging is definitely just data. There is no voice involved in those programs. Texting is the same as typing and is delivered like a message from an email. Sms is correlated with chat online which is a data transfer. Fax machines are considered voice/data. With this I do get confused. On some fax machines you talk on them, while others are more like computers. Most fax machines are connected to the landline. Pagers are data, there is not talking into them. And you can only receive data, and maybe send one back. Some pagers are considered sms/text messengers, with that in mine; it definitely reassures me that it is a data. VoIP is data. You ask me how I know. I say because of the cord that it has to go through. It would most likely go through a cat 5. VoIP is an online phone service. Anything online is considered data regardless of the voice that you get to input into it. Skype and face time are both voice and data. It really depends I guess where you Skype from or with what. Cell phones are both data and voice....

Voice vs Data. Physical Networking

...Cell Phones: When cellular phones first came about they were all voice transmitting information in an analog format, similar to a fixed-line telephone. (Andrew Oliviero, 2012) Once the second generation of cell phones was introduced in the late 90s early millennium the transmission shifted from analog to digital. Aside from using voice, they introduced data which allows you to text or send an MSM to another person without actually talking. Think of using AOL or MSN messenger back in the day on your computer except through your cell phone. Now we are up to 4G which allows more data, applications, and a stronger connection. A minicomputer in your pocket that allows you to talk, text, play games, email, GPS, varies applications such as counting your calorie intake for you. Fax Machine: Fax machines use voice to transfer data. The fax would be connected to a Voice over IP line if it could, but that specific data transfer was not designed to carry fax, therefor fax over VoIP is not reliable. You would lose data packets because UDP would simply ignore it, and VoIP uses UDP packets to send voice data to the phone line. Pagers: In the beginning pagers only used the data networks sending just numbers from the control system to the devices. Then over time the pagers systems changed by using both voice and data network with sending voice messages to the pagers. Each station covers a wide area range from 15 to 30 miles. The page is transmitted over RF by the transmitter....

Landlines phones use both voice and data networks. They work by transmitting voice and data signals by copper wire. Landlines refer to a phone that uses a solid medium telephone line such as a metal wire or fiber optic cable for transmission. In 2003 there was 1.263 billion main telephone lines worldwide. SMS/Text messaging known as short messages use a data network. SMS is a service component of phone, web, or mobile communication systems. It uses standardized communication protocols to allow fixed line or mobile phone devices to exchange messages using data application. Has an estimated 3.5 billion active users. Fax Machines use voice networks. With a fax line you plug into a fax terminal adapter, and then plugs into a network connection. They often share a phone extension and have a fax switch. You need to use a proper fax over IP protocol, such as T.38 to achieve consistent reliable faxing. Pagers are designed to receive the paging signals that are transmitted under control of the paging terminal. These paging signals are designed to carry pager-specific address information in order to alert an individual pager. Pagers use voice and data networks....
