...Improving Wal-Mart’s Employee Relations GM591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior April 20, 2010 INTRODUCTION The Organization that we selected as our topic of discussion in our Project Paper is the Wal-Mart Corporation. Sam Walton is the founder of Wal-Mart. He opened his first store called Wal-Mart Discount City in Rogers, Arkansas in July of 1962. In 1997, Wal-Mart was able to become the largest private employer in the United States. In that same year, their annual sales totaled over $105 billion. In 2010, Wal-Mart has over 2.1 million employees worldwide. There 2010 fiscal year sales exceeded $400 billion dollars (Wal-Mart About Us, 2010). I have been a loyal customer of Wal-Mart for years. Therefore, I was shocked when I found out about some of Wal-Marts questionable unofficial policies through talks with friends and family members who worked for them in the past and some who currently employed by them. My mother in law worked for them from 2006 thru 2008. She was required to work 8-hour shifts without a lunch break on a regular basis. One of my cousins was required to clock out......

Walmart Case Study

...practices?” Walmart has been deriving value from its sustainability strategy through multiple factors. First of all, Walmart was able to create value by introducing new revenue streams from sustainable projects. For example the recycling initiative would create revenue stream that would otherwise not have been realized. Walmart has also created value by creating transparency within its own supply chain. By being directly involved with its suppliers, it was able to manage its supply chain. Walmart’s goal via its networks was to influence stakeholders, primarily its suppliers, to initiate sustainable practices that would be in line with Walmart’s values. By doing so, Walmart has to monitor every supply chain participants, and by doing so, they were able to eliminate redundant channels in the process. Another thing that they did was their overall cost reduction in the value chain processes. It was able to reduce inefficiencies in packaging, transportation, and waste, among other factors. By doing so, it sees the potential cost reduction in the long run. Furthermore, Walmart derived future long-term value through its game changer strategies that it plans to implement in all of its networks. Walmart......

Walmart

...Walmart Manages Ethics and Compliance Challenges Sanelesia Hawkins West Georgia Technical College Abstract Despite its financial success and international proliferation, Walmart and its business practices have generated controversy and divided public opinion. Supporters praise Walmart’s sales of needed household items and groceries at relatively low prices, while critics condemn the corporation’s generally low wages paid to employees and its tendency, as a big-box retailer, to put small, community-based stores out of business. As a result, Walmart is often the subject of intense social and political debates pertaining to capitalistic practices and ethical treatment of workers. Another major criticism of the company pertains to its long history of allegedly “invading” smaller towns and communities, establishing stores, and thereby driving small, family-owned and -operated stores out of business because they were unable to compete financially. Walmart Manages Ethics and Compliance Challenges Walmart has been criticized by many groups and individuals, including labor unions and other groups. It has been accused of selling merchandise at such low costs that competitors have tried to sue it for predatory pricing (intentionally selling a product at low cost in order to drive competitors out of the market). Over the last decade or so Walmart has become involved in numerous lawsuits for a variety of reasons. The majority of the suits are class action lawsuits in which......

...The 21st century marks another century of huge change. Take a long term project like NASA, the United States of America (with the help from other countries) took what a lot of people would consider a “leap of faith” into a massive design initiative to start a space program and land a rocket on the moon! The initiative would take massive resources and require a talent pool from around the globe. In the end, it was a very successful program; a lot of research and development, jobs, and relationships were a result of such a massive long term initiative. Fast forward to 2013, Walmart, the largest retailer in the world (If sales was GDP it would be the 19th largest country in the world) is faced with its own design initiative. Walmart wants to implement sustainability strategy into its business model. This is not implementing a new green product into the product offering, this is a project like the earlier example of NASA. Walmart is going to reengineer and re-create the way it does business.Walmart can leverage its current technologies and resources to get sustainability an issue of the past. In order for Walmart to reengineer/re-create it will have to follow 5 steps outlined below. * Step one, Identify all parties who are touched by Walmart. * Step two, understand and identify interactions amongst parties. * Step three, organize group meetings, partnerships, and training * Step four, use ERP, Web 2.0 and other technologies to build platforms that allow cross...

Walmart Part3

...Part 3 QUESTION 1: How does managerial planning for Project Impact take place at different levels within the organization? A plan is a blueprint for goal achievement and specifies the necessary resource allocations, schedules, tasks, and other actions. Planning means identifying goals for future organizational performance and deciding on the tasks and use of resources needed to attain them. In other words, managerial planning defines where the organization wants to be in the future and how to get there. (New Era of Management Richard L. Daft 10th edition) As how it shown on the figure above, there are four levels of goals and plans, namely mission statement, strategic goals and plans, tactical goals and plans as well as operational goals and plans. The planning process starts with a formal mission that defines the basic purpose of the organization. The mission is the basis for strategic (company) level of goals and plans, which in turn shapes the tactical (divisional) level and the operational (departmental) level. Top managers are responsible for establishing the strategic goals and plans that reflect commitment to both organizational efficiency and effectiveness. Middle managers such as the heads of major divisions or functional units are responsible for making the tactical goals and plans. A division manager will formulate tactical plans that focus on the major actions the division must take to fulfill its part in the strategic plan set by top management.......

How Walmart Uses E-Commerce in Its Supply Chain

...How Walmart Uses E-commerce in Its Supply Chain In 2011, Walmart’s sales amounted to $419 billion and were ranked first in Fortune 500’s list of world’s largest companies by revenue. (Walmart 2011). What contributed to Walmart’s success? With heavy investment into their supply chain management system it has enable them to reduce overall costs, minimize inventory levels, and optimize logistics and distribution thus making them more successful. Analysis will be made as to why Walmart is concentrating on supply chain projects, why some suppliers are not in compliance with mandatory RFID tags, and how e-commerce improves transaction processing. Why Walmart is Concentrating on Supply Chain Projects Walmart is investing heavily in projects to constantly improve their supply chain which will allow them to lower overall costs and increases profit margin. An illustration of this is that prior to the efforts on supply chain management in 2002, on sales of $218B, they generated a return of 3%. In 2011, their profit margin increased to 6.1% while doubling revenue. By constantly upgrading the management of product through the various distribution channels and the process in which consumers receive products, time and money can be saved by Walmart which in turn benefits the consumer. In order for Walmart to remain successful on a global level, being competitive is the key. To be competitive in the “front of the house”, they must remain competitive in the “back of the house”. ...
