The Wampanoag people were an Indian tribe and the original natives of Massachusetts and Rhode Island (Wampanoag Indian Fact Sheet, n.d.). They had a very traditional economy that is primarily based on fishing and agriculture (Wampanoag Tribe, n.d.). They did have corn husk dolls and toys like handheld ball games and miniature bows and arrows. The mothers traditionally carried their babies in cradleboards on their backs. The men were the hunters and sometimes went to war to protect their land and families while the women were the farmers and took care of the children and cooked the meals. They harvested corn, beans, and squash. Deer, turkey, and small game were hunted and the men often went fishing in their canoes. The children gathered herbs, berries, and nuts. Contradictory to the popular belief that all Indians live in teepees, the Wampanoag people lived in villages of small rounded houses called wigwams. The villages were built around a central square used for ceremonies and councils. Some villages were surrounded with log walls for protection.
