Wasp: A Buzzing Start to a life of Short Films
Whenever I consider the term "short film", my mind never fails to delve deep into my childhood (which was practically owned by the Disney Corporation) when I used to watch and experience various animated shorts that had been fully produced, directed and crafted for the sole purpose of entertaining a child. But these works of pure imagination are quite unlike a new type of short film that I have recently discovered, and it was during my most recent travels through the land of film where I observed a new breed of short film that had been developed with a far more complex architecture. When I first experienced their unique design I have to admit that I felt as though I had been forced from my bubble …show more content…
But from her work alone it is easy enough to understand what she is trying to achieve and with an arsenal of filming techniques she can (and has) put into film what we’re all really thinking but too afraid to say. Arnold’s first outing into the world of film is a story that follows the life of struggling single mother of four. In the setting of Dartford (somewhere in depths of Kent) the protagonist named Zoe (Natalie Press (The Gathering and Spiritual Rampage), is first seen descending a flight of stairs, babe in arms and with the rest of her troop ambling on behind her. At first the audience isn't entirely sure of her personality or motivations but as the narrative moves along the film’s setting is displayed to a fair degree, allowing the audience to make their own assumptions about characters and their actions. However, it isn’t long before the all suspicions are laid to rest when we see our heroine viciously start a fight with one of her neighbours and it is from this moment onwards when the audience understands what kind of person Zoe (Press) is. Once this miniature action sequence passes the plot marches onwards to engage with the story and the audience doesn’t have to wait long to bear witness both Zoe’s strengths and weaknesses as a mother when an old flame …show more content…
My initial thoughts mainly focused on the dark and gritty nature that the film depicts and I showed no fondness towards any of the characters because to me they came off as very unlikeable and I struggled to pick out any redeemable qualities that weren’t immediately countered by an unlikable quality. I also disliked the fact that there wasn’t a character who brought light to the dark plot, I couldn’t find anyone who would eventually come and make everything better which left me feeling a little depressed when I saw the credits roll. However, for the sake of this review I watched the film for a second time and I saw how blind I had been during my first viewing. I realised that the characters aren’t sharp tongued and unlikable, instead they’re actually very realistic and flawed just like any other human being that I’ve met. Not only that but they are all designed to perfection with enough depth to give the Mariana Trench a run for its money. The plot is very well written as it allows for these characters to explore their personalities for the audience to see and by the end of the film you can see and understand the development that Zoe has gone through as a character, leaving me with a much more pleasant taste in my

It Takes a Thief

...ENGL 1301   Zombie Apocalypse: It takes a thief   Are you prepared for a Zombie Apocalypse? Throughout the years, movies, television shows, and other miscellaneous things have heightened a large number of people’s suspicion about the possibility of disease-ridden humans taking over the world. In reality, that atrocity is not very far-fetched. First of all, what does the word zombie mean? There are several possible etymologies of the word zombie.  According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word entered English circa 1871; it's derived from the Louisiana Creole or Haitian Creole zonbi, which in turn is of Bantu origin. A zonbi is a person who is believed to have died and been brought back to life without speech or free will. One possible origin is nzambi, the Kongo word meaning "spirit of a dead person." Another is jumbie, the West Indian term for "ghost.” With so many vaccines and medicines being mass produced without the sufficient steps taken to test the results, the chance of humans contracting unimaginable side effects is a rational possibility. All it takes is a host. “A reservoir host, or simply a reservoir, refers to a living (human, animal, insect, or plant) or non-living (soil, water) entity where a disease-causing organism can normally live and multiply. A host in which a parasite resides to sexual maturity is called a primary host, and a host in which a parasite spends only part of its life cycle or does not reach sexual maturity is called an intermediate...

Scientific Inquiry

...Introduction Blue porch ceilings are quite prevalent along the east coast, there are many theories as to why, from keeping evil spirits out of the home to fooling spiders and wasps into thinking that the ceilings are actually the sky. Many old houses around the Victorian and Colonial era bear this color in their porches due to the popularity at the time, but even now the popularity of the color is prevalent. Besides keeping evil spirits from entering the homes and fooling bugs, the blue ceiling reminds the owners of the blue skies even on cloudy days. Hypothesis The blue paint used in the painting of porches of the Victorian and Colonial homes contains an ingredient that repels insects, a natural insecticide used in the popular paint color. Prediction If there is an ingredient that naturally repels insects in the blue paint then the results should be obvious. Painting two porches ceilings one with blue paint and another one with white paint should demonstrate that the one with blue paint is bug free during the time of the experiment. Controlled Experimental Method First three enclosures were built; enclosure number one ceiling is painted sky blue. Enclosure number two ceiling was painted with the same type of paint only white color. Enclosure number three was left unpainted. Then thirty wasps were collected and divided equally in the enclosures. Lastly the experiment will be repeated with spiders and mud daubers to ensure the accuracy of the experiment. The observation...

Parasitoid Wasp Essay

...The proctodeum is not connected to the mid gut at the larval stage so as not to void feces into host (Gauld, Bolton, 1988). Most parasitoid wasp have very specific host interactions directly relative to the target host species. Parasitoid wasps differ from true parasites as they typically always kill their host. They spend a considerable amount of their life cycle in the single host. It has even been observed that many species targeting larva hosts will emerge from their egg very soon after being laid but wait for the host to reach a further stage in its life cycle before starting to feed off the host (Quicke, 1997, Sagarra, Vincent, 1999). This is just an example of the how particular this group has become in the category of ‘host predation’. Although the most common viewed type of host predation where a female wasp deliberately seeks out a particular host, paralyses it and oviposits its eggs can be considered the most unspecified type among parasitoids. The more specified types in this group would be for hosts that are concealed in wood, leaves or have someway made simple ovipositing impossible or highly difficult. i.e Orussidae practice vibrations to locate their target host in wood(Vilhelmsen, et...

Comparing Woolf's Essay: The Spider And The Wasp

...Death is the subject in both Woolf’s essay “The Death of the Moth” and Petrunkevitch’s essay “The Spider and the Wasp”, yet each writer’s approach is significantly different. Woolf portrays death in a more meaningful, vague manner, whereas Petrunkevitch was very straightforward and precise, leaving very little to the imagination. However, not only do their tones differ, but their purposes do as well. By the end of reading “The Death of the Moth”, one can quickly understand that although Woolf is literally talking about the death of an insect, she is figuratively trying to relate these insects to us as humans. Unlike Woolf, Petrunkevitch is not looking for a deeper meaning behind anything but is describing to us the powerful relationship between...

Identity in Wasp Factory and History Boys

...someone’s identity, and even aspects of religion. Neither Banks nor Bennett makes a conclusive statement on a definitive cause of the formation of identity, although it can be argued that each work infers a definitive influencer on identity, with both authors choosing a somewhat nurture over nature stance on personal growth although the balance of the formation of identity is differing between the character that is being discussed. For almost all characters within the works education is the most aspect of their identity in some way. For the boys in “The History Boys” education defines them in that they are all school boys, they are defined by what they do, this is similar for the teachers in the play also, this is contrasting to Frank in “The Wasp Factory”, who is ultimately defined not by his education, but specifically his lack thereof. The characters of both works are in some way changed by their identity, and specifically a focus can be placed on Frank and Dakin. Frank is educated in some ways by his father, and this ultimately influence much of his mannerisms, and Dakin although being taught by both Hector and Irwin, seems to primarily favour Irwin’s education to influence his own. For Frank, this influence is...

Have You Ever See Wasps Close-Up In Your Life?

...Have you ever seen wasps close-up in your life? Well, I have. This entire scenario took place in Bossier City, Louisiana. As my “adventure” began, we just finished dinner. As my entire family went outside to feel the cool breeze, we took our Frisbee out and started to play with it. The Frisbee we played had LED lights so that when the Frisbee landed, it glowed. SMACK! I accidentally smacked my brother with the Frisbee when I threw it at him. Also, I accidently threw the Frisbee and hit our neighbor’s wasp nest. I thought they will be proud but it turned out that the wasps were kind of angry, by the sound they made. I took a bike ride around my neutral neighborhood. I took the bike ride to calm me down from all the homeworks my teachers...

Falcon Vs Raven Essay

...How could the strong personalities of the falcon, wasp, and raven ever work together? With the independence of the falcon, determination of the wasp, and selfishness of the raven, this collaboration seems almost impossible. However, in a harmonious land afar off, the unification of these creatures was necessary to keep the peace. The internally-contentious Favesp is the combination of the falcon, wasp, and raven created by the angry mother nature. This story depicts the unwillingness of our world to work through our differences and what could result if we fail to do so. In Hiraeth, a land in harmony with the spirit of its life and nature, animals were beginning to dispute for the first time. In desire to be revered, the three most superior creatures, the falcon, wasp, and raven, argued over who deserved the home of Mother Tree. Because of the stubbornness of these animals, what started out as a sophisticated debate soon turned into a vicious war. Fighting to the point of destruction and murder, Hiraeth was no longer a land of serenity and peace. No, what was once a place of unity and love, was now destroyed by malicious actions preceded by ignorant desires. As Mother Nature’s grief grew as the contention did, her anger was carefully kindled towards a plan of resolution of the conflict. Condemning the greed of the animals, she cursed...

...particular case, are a weapon waiting to be used." Eleanor Roosevelt, 1942. The Women Pilots of America were a big impact during WWII because without them, thousands of airplanes wouldn’t have been flown to military bases nationwide. The WASPs were, not only the first women in history to be trained pilots, but they were also a very important asset to WWII because they helped fly airplanes to military bases, they were given new opportunities, and they proved to men that they could do anything they could do. During the 1940’s, the U.S. military was in search for new pilots to deliver airplanes to military bases due to the fact that they were quickly producing thousands of new airplanes. Without the need for more pilots, women wouldn’t have had the opportunity to show what they were capable of. More than 25,000 had applied for the pilot training program, but only 1,830 women were accepted. The women who were accepted had to go through 200 hours of certified flight time. It was later decided that they would only need 35 hours of certified flight time. These women also flew over 60 million miles of operational flights to factories and military bases. Records showed women pilots had better performances than male pilots. “There was a group of WASP sent to a B-26 school to get checked out and they were met by the officer instructor. He said, ‘I’m not going to teach any damn women how to fly.’ But it was an order, so he had to. Men refused to teach women how to fly a plane, only because...

Essay On Speciation

...Phylogenetic analysis suggests that fig pollination has only evolved once. This is probably due to relationship being highly specific with the pollinators being highly host specific with morphological adaptions and life cycles which depend completely on their host and with pollination of the fig dependent on its pollinators. Along with these pollinator exists non-pollinating wasps (e.g, Apocryptophagus) which compete with pollinating wasps for fig hosts, this competition weakens the mutualistic relationship. The diversification of figs and its pollinators is taught to have been caused by co-speciation along with parallel radiation, but due to the tight relationship between pollinators and its host fig it is taught that this hinders speciation separately from each other suggesting co-speciation as a means of evolution. In contrast non-pollinating wasps and parasites are not constrained to such tightly matched speciation of their host...

Deductive Reasoning

...class, because incorrect categorizations will result in unsound conclusions. For deductive reasoning to be sound, the original hypothesis or generalization also must be correct. A logical deduction can be made from any generalization, even if it is not true. If the generalization is wrong, though, the specific conclusion can be logical and valid but still can be incorrect. One can better understand deductive reasoning by looking at examples. A generalization might be something such as, "All wasps have stingers." The logical conclusion of a specific instance would then be, "That is a wasp, so it has a stinger." This is a valid deduction. The truth of the deduction, however, depends on whether the observed insect is, indeed, a wasp. People often use deductive reasoning without even knowing it. For example, a parent might say to a child, "Be careful of that wasp — it might sting you." The parent says this because he or she knows that wasps have stingers and, therefore, that the observed wasp has a stinger and might sting the...

Each cell after cell division has half the number of chromosomes as the original parent cell. “What wasps can tell us about Sex” by Christoph Vorburger Researchers found out that wasp that can reproduce asexually and sexually in the course of evolution. They came up with various theories that explain the problem of comparison. The modes of Reproduction in wasp are different both in genetic difference and individual difference. “Females develop from fertilized eggs and makes from unfertilized eggs. I n sexual populations, females only produce daughter without fertilization” according to the Science Daily article by C. Vorburger. Using cross experiments, the traits that are inherited are recessively and traits that act like a single genetic factor. Asexually reproduction genetically happens over a short period of time because there is o genetic mixing and adaption conditions are difficult to adjust to. I thought this article was interesting because not only do they reproduce in one way but also they reproduce both way, Asexual and Sexual. Wasp of all insects has different techniques of adapting to nature’s reproduction cycle. “No Sex Please, We’re females” by John Stublar Henry Doorly Zoo in Nebraska found evidence that female hammerhead sharks reproduce sexually but recently found that they could be mated...
