Wayne Williams was charged with murdering two people in Atlanta, Georgia. Shockingly enough, he was also linked to the killing of ten other boys. The way the evidence effected this trial is what makes the case so well known. There were 28 different types of fibers linking Williams to the murder victims. That can be an overwhelming amount of evidence. This case happened in the 1980s and the evidence presented in the case was crucial to proving Williams guilt. While investigations were going on to determine how victims died, there was a discovery of fibers on the victims’ bodies. The goal of the investigator was to determine if any fibers in Wayne Williams home or person matched those fibers found on the victims. Williams denied killing anyone and was out and about on the night of one of the murders looking for a woman who gave him her number. Williams even failed several polygraph tests. What I found interesting was the dog hair significance in the case. Apparently, some dog hair was found on the victims that belonged to Williams. The tricky part comes to this: Do they prosecute on fiber evidence alone?
It might be hard to convince a jury with only this type of evidence. If they lost the case due to this kind of evidence that would be upsetting. They wanted more rock solid evidence such as witnesses or fingerprints. Eventually, an arrest warrant allowed Williams to be arrested and Georgia law allowed evidence to be brought in from other cases if there was a pattern established. One common problem in this case is that there was a lack of funds. It is very costly to go to trial. They couldn’t interview every witness like they needed to. To successfully shoot down the fiber evidence, expensive, very high caliber expert testimony would have been required. Williams' defense team just didn't have that kind of money. Fiber Evidence in Wayne Williams Case

...the Wayne Williams trial differ significantly from its use in previous cases? Numerous criminal trials over the years have used fiber evidence. In 1936, the wife of a NBC executive was murdered and the killer caught partly due to fibers from twine used to bind her during the murder. Ted Bundy was convicted of the murder of a 12-year old girl partly due to fibers found in his van. The trial of Wayne Williams, also based on fiber evidence, differed from other cases in several significant ways. From July 1979 to May 1981, thirty black children and young men were reported missing or found dead in the area of Atlanta, Georgia. The Georgia State Crime Lab found yellow-green nylon fibers and violet acetate fibers on the bodies and clothing of victims. The fibers from the different victims were generally similar to each other, linking them to a single source and tying them to one killer. The Wayne Williams case was the first time fiber evidence played a significant role in a case involving a large number of murder victims. An Atlanta newspaper wrote an article about several different fibers being located on the bodies. After the article, bodies located in the Atlanta area rivers were nude or clothed only in underwear. The release of the information caused a change in the way the suspect disposed of bodies, in an apparent effort to eliminate fiber evidence. Media attention appeared to result in a change in pattern of the suspect. Media attention on the murders and the Williams trial...

...Georgia 1979 to 1981. A minimum of 28 people were killed within the short time of about two years. Atlanta local Wayne Williams also African American and 23-years-old at the time of the last murders, now 52 years old, Wayne Williams continues to maintain his innocence. Wayne Williams is currently serving a consecutive life sentence for just two of the murders, but there where more than a half of dozen African American children and young men that was killed. In this case media divulged the physical evidence, but the FBI privately profiled the killer(s). Assumptions of the killer dropping the next body in a river to deplete evidence, the police and FBI officials staked out the James Jackson Parkway/ South Cobb Drive Bridge over the Chattahoochee River. May 22 1981 the last night of the stake out an FBI agent heard a splash in the water under the bridge. He saw a white 1970 Chevrolet station wagon slowly driving away, the same station wagon Eula Birdsong seen victim Yusuf Bell (14) get into a few years before in October 21 1979. When police pulled the car over that night a 23 year old Wayne Williams was the driver. The FBI took dog hair and fiber evidence from the car that was later found to be the key evidence in building a case against Wayne Williams. The car was later to be found to be his parents. The fibers matched the dog and fibers from the Parents house where Wayne lived at the time, he was convicted of the last two murders. Georgia Officials are fighting to Release KKK...

...Behavioral or Trait Theories Juliana Daza Medgar Evers College PSYC 215-Theories of Personality Professor Maureen D. Jarus April 27, 2012 A personality theory is a system of concepts, assumptions, ideas and principles proposed to explain different personalities. Personality theorist seek to explain human behavior in terms of inner causes, instincts, feelings of inferiority, needs, conditions of worth, intentions, and so forth. In this research paper, I will be exploring both behaviorist theory, as well as the Trait theory in trying to understand serial killer Wayne Bertram Williams. Behavioral Theories The Behaviorist theory places importance on the external environment, and on the effects of conditioning and learning. Ivan Pavlov was the first psychologist to discover and explore this theory at the beginning of the twentieth century. He demonstrated this form of learning which became known as “classical conditioning” in an experiment with dogs. He would place a small amount of meat on a dogs tongue, and after continuing to do this many times, the canines would salivate before they were giving the food. Before long, the dogs would begin to salivate as soon as Dr. Pavlov would enter the room. He realized that this was a reflex, whereas one stimulus will be followed by another r stimulus, because the two stimuli occurred close together. This reinforced that behavior can be attributed to experience. B.f. Skinner on the other hand, argued that most behavior is learned...

Wayne Williams Trace Evidence

...evidence has always played a role in criminal prosecutions. However, it was always been in the manner of supporting other evidence. The Wayne Williams trial changed the course of history, as it would be the first to use fiber evidence as its primary means of securing a conviction (Deadman, n.d.). Wayne Williams was suspected of killing 28-30 young boys and men in the Atlanta area, over the course of two years. Although the cause of death was similar among the victims, police had little to no other evidence to follow up on except a yellowish/green fiber with violet accents, found on twelve of the victims (Owens, 2009). Fiber experts in the Washington D.C. Federal Bureau of Investigation, (F.B.I.) lab analyzed and concluded that the fibers on all the males were “a match”. It was determined that the structure and color of the fibers was very unique. The design was that of a triple lobed, cross sectional pattern, similar to that used in...

Sacramental Imagination

...Catholic Imagination in Film [ 4/3/2013 ] A Style of His Own John Ford is without a doubt one of the greatest film makers to have ever lived. This can be made evident by the long celebration of his work since the time it was made till now. His works have brought about feelings of both joy and sorrow and have been the focal point for many arguments about human nature and right versus wrong. It is through Ford’s use of imagery as well as his characters actions that we are able to see that he has a Sacramental image of the world that he wishes to share with his audience. Ford uses his view of the world to deliver messages he has learned in his life to his audience through his films. Ford tries to let his audience see that some widely accepted ideas of his time were not quite correct about both people of different religions, and ethnicities. The Sacramental imagination as we understand it today can be compared to a Christian’s outlook on life. This so called imagination, or way of thought simply means that God and Heaven are present here on Earth. Ford, as many others do, believed that the world is at its core, a good and moral place that is just in need of guidance. He did not believe that we were all pre-destined or that the world was basically evil like the dialectical imagination would have us believe, but instead that God guides us along our way and is involved in everything we do. Ford’s belief in the Sacramental imagination can be accredited to both his...

In Pursuit of Music

...Tommy Skennion Professor Andreana Binder English 1301 20 July 2011 In Pursuit of Music What is music? Dictionary.com defines it as “an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.” Music is all around us each and every day. Whether it be a three note jingle on a television station, or to the tracks you listen to in your car. I believe music is an integral part of our lives and to the human experience. It crosses cultures, boundaries, and races; life, death and everything in between. The fact that music can be so powerful continues to inspire and motivate me to pursue a career in the field of music. We’ve all had times when you hear a song and it seems to invoke some kind of feeling or emotion inside of you. You may experience the feeling of “goose bumps” throughout your skin. The song playing might even take you back to another time. I’ve always found things like this intriguing about music. To be able to portray and convey, or even bring out any emotion; thru sound or music; is a pretty powerful thing. As in all art forms there is a sense of creation. Essentially creating something from nothing, in effect, keeps us coming back for more. From an artistic point of view, an art is a form of creation that allows the artist to express oneself freely. That is a gratifying experience in itself. One of the most profound things I find about music is that it has the ability to bring people...
