Ways to Overcome Insomnia for College Students What is insomnia? Insomnia is ‘a common condition in which you have trouble falling or staying asleep’ (N.H.L.B.I, 2009). According to Peterson (2002), 87 out of 218 patients in general outpatient facilities at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia complained of insomnia. Insomnia affects people of different age groups including teenagers. In fact, teenagers in tertiary education easily suffer from insomnia because they may not have a healthy lifestyle and face a lot of stress in their studies. However, there are ways for college students to deal with insomnia. To overcome insomnia, college students should adopt new sleeping habits, manage their stress level and seek professional treatment. Firstly, students who suffer from insomnia have to practice good sleeping habits. They should have a regular sleeping schedule. Also, students should go sleep and wake up at the same time for everyday. Besides, students should avoid taking caffeine, alcohol or nicotine before they go to sleep. Although alcohol can helps someone fall sleep easily, it has side-effect which affect the quality of sleep (Saisan et al., 2011). Students in insomnia should not take coffee or drinks with caffeine before they sleep. Then, students need to create the right sleeping environment. The bedroom must be quiet, dark, as well as comfort. Students should have an open-window in their bedroom or switch on the fan to keep the bedroom cool. Next, college students are advised to manage stress level as stress is one of the causes of insomnia. They should practice relaxation activities such as yoga, tai chi, and aerobic dance. These activities not only make them healthier physically but also help them to relax their mind with healthy ways. Moreover, students have to speak to their family members, friends and college students. They can tell about the issues that they worried to someone they believe (A.D.A.M., Disclaimer, 2009) Students have a lot of assignment to do and many examinations to sit in tertiary education. Students need to manage their time properly to avoid feeling too stress and suffering from insomnia. Due to worry about the assignments and examinations, students have difficulty fall sleep at night. If they manage their time properly, they can complete their assignment on time and avoid suffer in insomnia.

Last but not least, tertiary students should seek professional treatment if their problems persist. In fact, medical disorder would cause them difficult in sleeping. Therefore, students should consult sleep disorder specialists or doctors to cure insomnia. Specialists or doctors will give medicine, for examples, melatonin, valerian, or sleeping pills according to students’ condition. Furthermore, students can seek treatment from acupuncturists. Peterson (2002) said that ‘100% of patients treated for insomnia obtained benefit without recurrences within 18 months of follow-up’ in his journal. College students also need to consult psychiatrists as their insomnia maybe affect by their psychological problems. If students have those psychological problems, psychiatrists will decide the most effective treatment for students. In brief, there are few strategies to treat insomnia for college students. Students may change a better sleeping habit, have several ways to release their stress and seek professional helps. Insomnia maybe won’t bring death but it represents a sign that something in the body is abnormal. Prevention is better than cure, students should have good strategies to prevent suffer from insomnia before it is too late to cure it. (545 words)
