(1967) A retrospective view of An introduction to weather and climate derivatives John E. Thornes University of Birmingham The weather derivatives market has grown from being virtually non-existent in 1997 (Price Waterhouse Coopers 2001) to an estimated $10 billion global market by 2002. The market in Europe is just beginning to take off, as indicated by the establishment of the Met Office and London-based Umbrella Brokers’ joint venture WeatherXchange (www.weather xchange.com) in June 2001 and the Londonbased Liffe (www.liffeweather.com) weather futures market and European weather index in July 2001. These two Internet sites give a good introduction to the basic concepts of weather derivatives. Since the early 1980s, derivatives have been used by companies to manage their exposure to risk, be it due to currency exchanges or a host of other financial...

Global Warming

...realize the how global warming affects the environment. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effects of global warming on the weather, overall health, and on wildlife. Global Warming on Weather Patterns The increase in water temperatures in the ocean has generated more energy into what used to be normal tropical storms, causing them not only to be more frequent, but a lot stronger and sometimes very destructive. As we have seen within the last decade, there has been a marked increase in the number of hurricanes at the four and five category level. For instance, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005 and was said to be the second strongest and one of the deadliest hurricanes ever recorded in the U.S. The loss to the economy was a whopping $125 billion (“Weather Patterns,” n.d.). In addition to the hurricanes, the warmer temperatures have led to drought conditions and the increase of fires throughout the western United States. In 2006, new records were set in the amount of reported fires as well as acres burned (“Weather Patterns,” n.d.). The cost for fighting these fires has been increasing yearly in the amount of $1 billion. Another effect of global warming is the intense rainstorms that we have been experiencing. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports the increase is due mostly to human-induced global warming (“Weather Patterns,” n.d.). These heavy...

...a copy about our meeting agenda? All: yes we do Fatima : good, ok let start to our first agenda which is about material quality that will presented by Miss Nurul Hidayah Baid. Daya : first of all, good morning to all member and our director. I would like to discuss about our product material because from my observation, our competitor begin to change their strategy to attract the consumer. So from my opinion, i think it's also better if our company develop new strategy. As a production manager, i think it is better if we upgrade our material quality that is suitable with the weather nowadays. Aisya : I second what Miss Hidayah propose about the material quality that is should be suitable with the weather because we live in Malaysia which is we have a hot and humid weather throughout the year. People will find it is uncomfortable if they wear a super thick clothes in hot weather. Fatimah : So, any suggestion about types of material that we should choose for our product to make sure we produce product with the best quality? Daya : in my opinion, it more suitable if we using a cotton material such ad Tettra cotton (T26), Cotton 100%, Micro Fibre and Cotton Interlock., Because nowadays most of consumer prefer to use cotton material because it can permits the movement of air from skin to allow the heat to dissipate and reducinh the humidity. Purposes: For Car Sharing Models it is very important to offer cars which are most needed by the customer. One factor which influences the demand of the customers could be the weather. This question has to be answered to react on the customers needs. Due to the fact that the competitive situation in this branch is under pressure it is very important for Car Sharing Models to offer cars which are most needed by the customer. To achieve a high acceptance of the customer the planning of the buying department has to be adjusted to the customer needs. The result should answer the question if the customers choose cars by considering the weather conditions. The result could be that customers are using more of convertibles when the sun is shining. Another result could be that the people are using the X1 more when it is snowing because this model has an all-wheel drive. Moreover the customers could use the other BMW models less when it is snowing, because the rear wheel drive is less comfortable and less save on a snowy underground. Another result could be that the type of the vehicle does not depend on the weather. Mankind

... Charlie Raymond Post University There is strong evidence of mankind's helping hand in global warming. The impact of mankind on the environment will prevent us from having a normal future. Over the past decade the world has suffered from extreme weather events caused by global warming. The Earth's average temperature raised an average of 1 degree Fahrenheit over the past 50 years (Which of These is Not Causing Global Warming Today – written by Sharon Begley and Andrew Murr). The rise of the temperature goes hand in hand with the rise of the Industrial revolution. The climate has changed drastically over the years with the rise of our production of buildings, automobiles, expressways, etc. Scientists have reproduced the effects of carbon dioxide alone, and found that the temperature is going to rise much more than originally anticipated. Earth is indeed getting warmer, and we are at fault. Over the years we have conducted research on the global climate changes taking place worldwide. We have suffered both as a nation, and as a world due to these climatic changes taking place. It has been up in the air about what the real cause in what is speeding the process up. We have suffered from the severe weather changes all around the world and nobody knows why. According to a Newsweek Article Vol 150 Issue 2 titled, “Which of These Is Not Causing Global Warming Today?” written by Sharon Begley and Andrew Murr on July 2007, “600 climate scientists from 40 countries reported...

Career Options For Meteorology

...Meteorology Meteorology is the scientific study of Earth’s atmosphere and is most often used to predict the weather. The atmosphere is the layer of gases that surround a planet and affect its environment and its weather. Meteorologists, or atmospheric scientists, are scientists who study meteorology (Campbell, R., 2015). They are often employed as a result of their skills by firms that require weather predictions. For example, News casting agencies often employ meteorologists to predict oncoming weather. In case it snows a meteorologist would be able to help determine the amount of salt and plow trucks are required. They can also predict if there are severe flood warnings in a specific area. Meteorology was first being conducted by the...

...discarded pets.   State rules that went into effect this year should help prevent those less ethical individuals from dumping these creatures into our beloved eco system.   The laws include a $100 annual permit to own “reptiles of concern,” and a mandatory microchip.   Nevertheless, it is imperative that more be done to educate people about the problem of turning loose non-native species. In the past several decades, this species of reptile has thrived in the warm climate of the Everglades and surrounding areas of South Florida.   Their numbers have since grown, with an estimated breeding population in Florida in the thousands.   Pythons are likely to colonize anywhere alligators live, including North Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana.   So far, reports from witnesses indicate most of the snakes have been found in Everglades National Floods, droughts,...

Any view taken, is one of fear and trepidation. As a factual and unbiased paper, we will not take the Apocalypse theory into account for the fact that there are concrete facts or evidence. Regardless of why we believe something is wrong or changing, it is undeniably fact that the world is changing on many levels. The purpose of this paper is explore and attempt to find the reasons why this is happening, and what we, as mankind, can do to be prepared, and to attempt to mitigate any effect we may have on the acceleration of these changes Pollution and human consumption of fossil fuels, trees and other natural resources have been the scapegoat for “global warming” for several years now. The governor appointed us with one of his assistants named John to show us around the Island so we can learn its history and also if we had any questions. Next my team and I looked into the economy of the Island and we found out that Kava is a poor country with despicable living arrangements in some parts of the island because over 50% of the population is under 15 years of age. In conclusion upon getting back home and Bill Marriott receiving our report along with my recommendation we are now finished building our five star resort on the Island of Kava. To start using Google Glass, you tap the frame of the glasses and you’re taken to the home screen. You don’t see a bunch of icons like on smartphone home screen, just a simple real-life scene you’re looking at. To issue a command, you tap the frame and say “OK Glass”. 4. After you issue the order “OK Glass”, you can instruct the glasses to do something specific by saying something like “take a picture”. That’s it. There’s no fumbling around looking for the camera icon. 5. Same goes with video. With Google Glass, you can record what you see without moving a finger. 6.
