The Collapse

Detroit, Michigan: a city where more than 1.1 million people have vanished in the past 60 years. The city has dropped 25% in population just in the last 10 years. The city crumbled apart, which forced people to abandon their houses and businesses, leaving them with nothing. Even hospitals and religious structures were abandoned--and are still abandoned--with no demand to fill them. Ultimately, the auto industry was hit the hardest. With a systematic city, there was nowhere for the people to find jobs, since the auto industry was also hurting. More than 200,000 people worked in the auto industry in the mid-20th century.

Since the slow migration out of Detroit, the number fell to 100,000 people in the early 21st century. People have compared the migration out of Detroit to the whole city of San Francisco being deserted. More than 1.1 million people have left the city over the past decades. With economic downward spiral, Detroit hit its lowest point. With less than 750,000 people living in the city, it has been hard for local government to get money for the federal government for urban aid--leaving people still living in the city to suffer more. Detroit was named the poorest city in the nation, with one out of three people living below federal poverty. (1) With so many people suffering, it led to many fires. Buildings and houses were burning rapidly. There were two major reasons for these fires; crime and insurance money.

Housing

The flight of the Big Three impacted the city, stopping all production. This meant layoffs for thousands of people. Starting in late 2006 early 2007, the city was getting closer to hitting its rock bottom. Detroit became the number one city in the nation ranked for foreclosures. It was said that more than 5% of households were entering the state of foreclosure. Compared to the rest of the country, Detroit had 4.8 times the number of foreclosures (2007 in Detroit was brutal, more than 113,889 homes had filed or were about to file for foreclose. (3). During this time period, more arsons have been reported. Click the link below to find out why arsons and foreclosures go hand in hand.

As evidenced in the entity Youtube, Constance York, is a private photographer and has documented different arson cases around Detroit, Michigan. (5)

Detroit, Michigan was perceived as a place with high poverty levels, which is key to urban crime. Urban crime originates from the issue of a high minority population, unemployment, population density, and age distribution. In Detroit, Michigan all of those factors do/did exist. Crime in Detroit was increasing tremendously during the collapse. Arsons became extremely popular during this suffering time. Structural fires had two different motives; the first was crime and the other intentional fires. In the city of Detroit, homeowners and business owners would intentionally set their house on fire to get money from the insurance companies. During this struggling time, people needed any penny they could get. The chances of them getting caught were only one to two percent. The issue has become so bad that Michigan Arson Prevention was established to work hand and hand with the insurance companies. (6) In addition to the insurance-motivated fires, there were riots that caused many of the cities fires.

Just in 2012 it was reported that five thousand fires broke out at vacant properties. This issue has just not been common in the past decade; in fact, in 1802 there was a bored meeting in Detroit to help stop the problem of fires and had appointed inspectors to find out the causes of them. With this so called "protection plan" the city of Detroit was burnt to the ground in 1805. (7) 1980 the city of Detroit had a huge problem with night fires, calling it Devil’s Night fires. Devil’s Night fire was a backfire of trying to end arson in the 1980s. The mayor had restricted children under the age of 18 to have a curfew of 6 o’clock. But with the rage of the city, the crime hit the highest point. Again in 1984 there was the so called arson festival. Where about 800 fires were set around the city of Detroit. (6) Throughout the years the government has tried to terminate the issue of arson, but with the crime rate so high it has been difficult.

The response rate to crimes in communities has increased significantly. Over the past decade almost 40% of the law enforcement has been cut in the city. Since there were less and less enforcement, there were not enough people to respond to the calls making the number of crimes increase. The numbers of crimes have been getting so high that it takes police up to 54 minutes to respond. Police in Detroit were even warning the citizens to go into Detroit at their own risk. (8) Detroit is a city where it’s the opposite from many cities because it only has a few good neighborhoods and many bad neighborhoods. (9). The idea of a safe community has been ripped apart in Detroit.

If you are currently employed, your paper should not include any information that might be considered proprietary, confidential, or might jeopardize your job, your company's competitive advantage or our national security. If you paper describes a case study (i.e. how something is done), I prefer that you not mention the company or agency involved by name unless it directly relates to specific points reported in your paper. You should indicate industry or type of business, but unless you receive written permission, you should not name the organization/business. Contact me if you have questions. Research Topic Selection I am not asking for a long paper, but your topic should be of interest to you AND in some way relate to the various topics we are covering in this class. It is responsible for prescribing accounting standards for companies, charities, cooperative societies and societies in line with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). The formulation of accounting standards in Singapore follows a formal and rigorous process that comprises four successive stages—namely exposure, reviewing of comments, post exposure and Issuance of final standards. Exposure Stage The exposure stage is triggered in response to the IASB issuing an Exposure Draft (ED) on new IFRS; amendments to existing IFRS, International Accounting Standard (IAS); a draft Interpretation of the International Financial Reporting Interpretations Committee (IFRIC) or amendment to an existing Interpretation.
