Virtual reality and augmented reality are two different versions of reality. The use of electronic systems caused a flash crash because the systems were not set up to catch things like the selling off futures at a rapidly dropping rate. The productivity of Valero is being measured on a dashboard that has access to current and historical production data.

Business and Support Systems

There are different digital realities that are currently available; two of these are augmented reality and virtual reality. A flash crash happened because electronic systems were not programmed to stop the sale of futures if the price dropped. Valero is managing their business using a dashboard to measure the productivity of their refineries.

Reality Gets Better
Augmented reality and virtual reality use similar technology, however, virtual reality immerses a person into an entirely new reality, while augmented reality enhances the real world reality. In augmented reality, a computer can supply a person with sensations, images and sounds. Digital data is added to the real world, so the virtual reality world is not nearly as exciting as the enhanced real world. Virtual reality immerses the user, and all of their senses, into a digital world that is entirely made up of media. Users of virtual reality generally have to wear a headset that provides them with a way to block out the real world while supplying them with a 3-D space.

Marketers have found an exciting option, augmented reality, in which they can attract consumers with this new technology. Consumers are now expecting high performance cellular phones that can do what a home computer can (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). New applications are being created for phones every day. An example of this would be the “Shazam” application. If you hear a song on the radio, or TV, or anywhere else, but do not know the name of the song or the artist and would like to find out, all you have to do is press the application button and then hold the phone up so Shazam can hear it. It will scan databases to find that song for you.

Augmented reality can be a very nice tool for individuals looking for a home to purchase. This is because there are applications being created that will allow buys to point their phone towards a house and it will provide detailed information about the house as well as the value for that home (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). This means that people who do not want to spend a lot of time searching with a realtor can go and shop without feeling pressured. This also takes pressure off the realtors because homebuyers are doing some of the legwork on their own. Manufacturing, military training, medical, engineering, and entertainment are all areas that could use augmented reality (Vallino, 1998).

The Flash Crash: Machines Gone Wild?

At the time, the potential for Greece to default on their debt, caused concerns in the European debt, and investor confidence was low (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). In 2010, prior to the crash, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) only controlled between 15% and 17% of the trades, the rest were made by new electronic exchanges. The NYSE kept the process of human trading, which is otherwise known as slow-mode, for times when there are big fluctuations in the market (Vallino, 1998). Some of the new electronic exchanges have been set up to stop trading when slow-mode goes into effect. This means that the different exchanges can have wide variations in prices. All of these issues were happening simultaneously, and are believed to have contributed to the flash crash.

Ease of access, cost, self-directed investing and convenience are all benefits of electronic trading. People can invest with a funded checking account, a computer, and access to the internet through online trading sites. Online trading is far more economical than using a human stockbroker because of the automation of the trades. Trading can happen, without going through a third party, whenever the investors choose. Electronic trading means that an investor can do their trading from anywhere with their computer and an internet connection.

Electronic trading of the futures contracts by Waddell & Reed Financial was executed so quickly that there was not time to try to stop it (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). The algorithm that was used by the firms’ computer did not take into account the price that the futures were being sold at. High-frequency traders (HFT’s) quickly bought up the futures that were pouring into the market, which caused the Waddell & Reeds computer to transfer faster (Laudon & Laudon, 2012).

I do not believe that this crash could have been prevented because no one can think of every possible contingency to put into the computers to keep this from happening again. Of course, after a failure like the flash crash, it is imperative that the systems be re-evaluated, and come up with a way to keep these specific problems to happen again. In the future, something else that has not been thought of is likely to happen, at which point the cycle will begin again.

Piloting Valero with Real-Time Management
Valero management had to take into account what factors they wanted to be included in their dashboards. The organization as a whole needed to provide information on exactly how the process works, so that Valero’s dashboard could be built to show useful information. Technology had to find a way to track all of the information to a series of monitors in the operations building. They overcame that obstacle by using information straight from their manufacturing software.

Information from each refinery is displayed on the dashboard; this includes data about energy consumption, safety, equipment reliability, plant reliability, and inventory management (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). Valero’s dashboard also allows management to compare actual production against planned or budgeted production and then take corrective action if necessary (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). In addition, management could change the staffing at locations that are over-performing or under-performing. With the information from the dashboard, Valero can see where inventory is getting too large and adjust performance of that specific location.

Valero has set up their dashboard to pull information straight out of their SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence application, which has all of the information from current production as well as the history for each plant (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). Since that system had already been in use, it did not require extensive reworking of their information systems. They had to purchase a large number of monitors to create the dashboard.

Valero’s management has decided that their dashboard is so successful that have determined they want more dashboards (Laudon & Laudon, 2012). Since management can compare planned production versus actual production, they can make decisions accordingly. It would not be worth the cost and effort to create a dashboard for things that are out Valero’s hands because they cannot change them.

Augmented reality and virtual reality are two versions of reality, that are different based on how immersed the player or viewer is within the reality. Electronic trading systems were to blame for a flash crash because the computers were not set up to stop the selling off of futures as the price dropped, instead it sped up as the futures were being purchased by the HFT’s as they were released. The productivity of Valero is being measured and managed using a dashboard that is linked directly to their manufacturing software. As technology continues to change the business world, it is important for companies to keep up with the trends so they can continue to be competitive.

In order to properly perform an assessment of the LBJ Company, there first had to be some set of standards or regulations that outline the internal controls and proper procedures for companies and businesses to adhere to for financial reporting. As it turns out internal control is a key component of Foreign Corrupt Practices Act(FCPA) of 1977 and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act(SOX) of 2002 which required companies to follow this set of internal controls. This list of internal controls is as follows: 1). Conduct its business in an orderly and efficient manner, 2). Safeguard its assets and resources, 3). Deter and defect errors, theft, and fraud, 4). Ensure accuracy and completeness of accounting data, 5). Produce reliable and timely financial and management information, 6). Profile of Working Students and It' S Implication on Academic Standing

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Not all people are given the chance to have a quality education especially in the Philippines because it is now complicated. That’s why having the chance to study and choosing the course should not be compared to some thing like for an example buying a dress for a special occasion and when realization comes into your mind that you don’t want it, you’ll return it or maybe get your money back. No, this isn’t right, because in college life, you have to treat every second as an important detail of your life. You should not waste every moment in it. So choosing the course which you think fits your capabilities is very important. Studying a specific course in college is not only about paying the fees rather the most important things here are the time and effort spent. As a change is made to a calendar, MS Project automatically reschedules all tasks affected by the change. Using Calendars There are two types of calendars in Project: base calendars and resource calendars. Base calendars define the working days and working hours for a project or a set of resources. Resource calendars define the working days and working hours for a specific resource. The default base calendar (also known as the project calendar) is called Standard. This standard calendar is usually set as an 8-hour day, 40-hour week, Monday through Friday, with no holidays. However, you can modify this standard calendar, but it is not recommended. MS Project also comes with two other base calendars: a 24-hour calendar and a night shift calendar. You can also create your own base calendars. You can manipulate such options as default start time and hours per day. Note: Resource calendars are updated automatically when the base calendar assigned to the resource changes. ...In week 1, my expectations were to build on what I already knew about the Sarbanes-Oxley Acts from work experience. My expectations were met and even exceeded my expectations. I came into the week with some unanswered questions and after the reading and discussion questions, they were answered. I had a broad understanding of the Sarbanes-Oxley from work experience and never got into the details, which this class allowed me to get into and really grasp what was put into the Acts and how to fully apply the Acts to real experience. Going into the week, I wasn’t really expecting much for budgets but by the end of the week I realized I didn’t know that much about the different kinds of budgets out there. It has helped me in my current positions because we do quite a bit of budgeting for some of our clients. My week 4 expectations were fairly low because of the audits I was a part of during my audit days. I do very little audit work nowadays but it was a great refresher to keep it fresh. Everything that I read during this week I knew and just reaffirmed my knowledge. We would split the audit up and my sections were the sections we covered during this week. When I first started auditing I had no accounting experience, I didn’t have any classes to fall back on. After the reading I felt really comfortable because I was performing the audits right and going into the audits with the right mind set and asking the right...

...Week 4 Case Study Adam Careaga Shorter University BUS 6750 ONLH2 Bill Carson April 5, 2014 Chinese Tires In 2008, the United Sates imported 46 million tires from China, three times as many as it did in 2004. China’s share of the American market leaped from 5 percent to almost 17 percent over the same period, while U.S. employment in the tire industry fell by more than 5,000 jobs and domestic production slumped from 218 million tires to 160 million tires. The Chinese import was causing a market disruption and the U.S. implemented a three year tariff on imported tires. The tariff consisted of a 35 percent tariff for the first year followed by a 30 percent tariff the second year then a 25 percent tariff the final year. The tariffs were place on top of an existing 4 percent import tariff. (Hill, 2011) In the scheme of all the tariffs and arguments over the imports the better question would be who benefitted from this high tariff and who suffered? Tire imports from China show clearly why international economics is different. Consumers should be looking for good-quality products at low prices, but when their purchasing shifts toward more imports of foreign products, it can become a controversial political issue. National government officials have the power to enact policies that can limit international transactions like importing. If the whole world were one country, the issue of shifts in purchasing would be left to the marketplace. Within a country...

Guess Your Card

...explain to me that in this game each of us in turn will blindly draw three cards from a partial deck of cards. This deck has had all cards above 9 removed, and for this game’s purposes aces are only equal to 1. Without looking at my cards I am to place them facing out on my forehead so the other players can clearly see the cards. Each of the other players is to do the same. The object of the game is to guess which cards you have on your own head using logic to solve the problem. Players draw question cards that reveal information about player cards, and the first to guess their cards based on the information revealed wins the game. My brother Andy has the cards 1, 5, and 7 showing on his forehead. His wife Belle has 5, 4, and 7. My girlfriend Carol has the cards 2, 4, and 6. Andy is selected to draw the first question card, and it asks if he sees two or more players who’s cards sum to the same value. Andy answers affirmatively. With this information I know that I must have cards that equal either 12 or 16. I know this because Belle’s cards sum to 16 and Carol’s cards sum to 12. Since Andy sees two of us with cars of the same value I am able to confirm that my sum must match either Belle’s or Carol’s. At this point none of us are able to conclude anything else about our cards, so Belle draws the next question card. Belle’s question reads “Of the five odd numbers [1, 3, 5, 7, and 9] how many different odd numbers do you see?” Belle answers that she sees all five the odd......
