Victimization Theory | Summarize the theory of victimization, describing its meaning and core concepts as it relates to the nature of crime. | Identify subcategories of the theory and describe each. | Apply the theory to one (1) real life example or scenario. Briefly explain why the theory applies to the example you identified. |
Rational Choice Theory (This theory is completed for you as an example of how to complete the remaining theories) | According to this theory, crime is a matter of personal choice and the criminal makes a rational decision to commit the crime. This view is that If a person is motivated, considers the choices, and they believe crime will benefit them without risk. (Siegel & Worrall, 2013, p. 45)This view is that for the criminal, the profit outweighs the punishment. | One sub-category is the “Deterrence Theory” which aligns itself by indicating crime would not be a “rational choice” therefore not chosen if there was a strong enough fear of punishment, acting to deter the criminal activity. (Akers, 1990, p.2) | One real life case was that of Ariel Castro. This is the nationally televised case of a man who kidnapped and held three (3) women captive in his Cleveland, Ohio home for over 10 years, during which he physically and sexually assaulted, fathered a child and kept these young women captive until one managed to escape 2013. Castro pleaded guilty to 937 counts including murder, rape, and abduction, to avoid Ohio’s death penalty. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole + 1,000 years by Judge Russo, Cuyahoga County, Cleveland where the crimes were committed. After being in prison only 30 days in Franklin County, Castro hung himself in his prison cell, ending his own life. I believe it relates to rational choice theory, Castro made a calculated choice to kidnap the missing teens and commit these crimes for over a decade,…...

...Energy in America Hum/111 August 12, 2012 Frank Nolan Energy in America I understand that cost and budgeting is a hot subject in the united states of American with the economy being so bad right now. But I do not think that there is one firm solution the energy needs on the United States. In my opinion I think we should do a combination of both, looking for oil on our homeland has more benefits the negatives. If we where able to find oil on our home land that would lower the price of oil and help build jobs and create a much less need to import oil from other country’s. If we spend money looking for oil in those areas and there is none it can be a huge waste of taxpayers money. Being faced with high risk and reward is always a struggle and the outcome can fall either way. While looking for oil in uninhibited places we should begin to explore other options for energy at the same time from wind, water and solar sources. The United States is depended on energy so reducing the amount used can be a uphill battle I believe we have the technology to create more efficient ways to use or present energy. Going one single route is not the solution to the energy situation in America this is why I think it is always up for debate and this is what makes it difficult to come up with a solution for the actual problem. I think if we take our time and per sue those options bit by bit , over time the true answer will come to surface. (chu, jan ) states that President Obama has...

...Professor Stein BEH/255 Introduction to Behavioral Health [ 9 March 2014 ] Problem Solving Simulation When solving the problem I had to figure out the different ways to solve the problem where I could get the correct results. The problem had a cat, dog, and a mouse that need to cross the river, but the raft will only hold two of them at a time. I knew that I couldn’t leave the mouse and cat, but also knew I couldn’t leave the dog and cat as well. So when I started the problem solving I sent the cat first, then dog and after doing this I brought the cat back then took the mouse. This seemed very easy to solve but unfortunately I knew that the cat couldn’t be left with the dog or the mouse. I realized that the cat would fight with the dog and the cat would eat the mouse as well. Once I got the problem solved I did try different strategies of how I could get each animal to cross the river in a different way, but did keep in mind that each step I tried wasn’t going to work because I couldn’t leave the cat alone with either one. These was my first steps I took the cat over first then went back to get the dog, then I realized this wouldn’t work unless I brought the cat back. Then when I brought the cat back I knew the cat and the mouse couldn’t be together as well, so then I brought the mouse over. After I solved the problem I did the opposite I brought the mouse first then realized again this wasn’t going to work do to the fact the dog and cat wouldn’t get along either so...

Week4 Discussion

...Week 4 HAS 515  Determine the importance of a thorough understanding of the legal liability of health care institutions from the Chief Medical Officer’s viewpoint. When you come across a legal issue that you do not understand, describe what your action steps might be. The CMO is a clinician and has clinical credibility and understand the practice of medicine. The CMO also has formal training in business, management, and leadership. Understanding the practice of medicine is critical, but the CMO must also understand the business of medicine both from a private practice as well as an academic perspective, depending on the setting. Credibility is required not only in the medical staff lounge, but also in the C-suite and the boardroom. The effective CMO is able to bridge the chasm between cost and quality because they understand both sides of the equation and know that, like a balance sheet, assets must equal liabilities. Neither a management degree nor a business degree alone is sufficient; real-world experience in healthcare organizations is essential. Specific skills are that the CMO must be able to credibly present and administer the agenda of quality to the governing body while supporting an economically viable budget, as well as the organization's strategic plan and legal policies and procedures( Cors,2009). If I come across legal issues that I don’t understand I will involve risk management department and review all documents needed such : Incident...

...Dirt Bikes and Technology The benefit of technology in a company far outweighs the initial costs, because it increases overall productivity if properly managed. The introduction of an intranet (a local network for the exchange of information) will be helpful to employees who are wanting to save their ideas or other types of documents that are important to company functionality. Also by introducing a company intranet it will allow for the other departments to communicate with each other. For human resources it would be easier for them to maintain employee records if they were able to have access to a file share structure that would allow them to monitory employees’ benefits, salaries, and when they were due for evaluations. The accounting department could automate all of their purchase orders using enterprise accounting software. This software could also keep track of employee travel, pay, and other expenses associated with running the business. By using the enterprise software different department could electronically submit their purchase orders, check requests, and employee travel to demonstrations and other trade shows. This would also cut down on the amount of storage space required for vendor files because the company could keep everything on a server which the accounting department can use to pull up old invoices without having to search through files. This will also save time because with the process being almost entirely automated the accounting department would...

Devry Business Law Week4

...Thomas Curtis Business Law 8/3/2014 Week 4 Professor McGovern There are certain grounds under which a compromise and settlement agreement can be invalidated. If a settlement agreement fails to establish certain elements like offer, acceptance and consideration, it can be invalidated.  Similarly, a settlement agreement can be invalidated due to: * Fraud; * Nondisclosure as fraud; * Duress; * Illegality; * Mistake; * Undue influence. A compromise induced by fraud can be invalidated.  In approving a proposed settlement agreement, a court must determine that the agreement is not the outcome of fraud[i]. Fraud exists if all of the following elements are present: * An untrue representation of fact knowingly by a party; * Making such representation recklessly; * Making untrue representation to deceive the other party and to induce him/her to act upon the same. Similarly, an unintentional nondisclosure without an intention to deceive will not constitute fraud.  However, a compromise can be invalidated for fraud if one party deliberately conceals facts with the intent to induce the action of other party.  The duty of disclosure is more comprehensive when there is a fiduciary relationship between the parties to the compromise.  At the same time, it cannot be presumed that the elements of fraud exist only because of the existence of a fiduciary relationship. Likewise, a person who makes a compromise as a result of duress...

...Introduction In order for a business to operate effectively, it must have appropriate controls in several areas of operation. These areas include purchasing, accounts payable, cash disbursements, finance, investment, and payroll. These areas of operation can directly affect the financial statements, and there must be proper controls to ensure they are accurate and complete in the accounting records (Louwers, Ramsay, Sinason, & Stawser, 2007). Without proper controls, mistakes in the recording of these areas can mislead investors to make an investment based on false information or turn them away due to financial statements that undermine the company’s abilities (Louwers, Ramsay, Sinason, & Stawser, 2007). Adequate controls allow a company the ability to track entries throughout a continued process and separate duties and responsibilities among a multitude of individuals (Louwers, Ramsay, Sinason, & Stawser, 2007). Controls offer a check and balance system for areas of operations, as well as employees. Conclusion In conclusion, internal controls should be in place for purchasing, accounts payable, cash disbursements, finance, investment and payroll. These controls help ensure entries are properly identified, accurate, and completed in the accounting system (Louwers, Ramsay, Sinason, & Stawser, 2007). Controls in these areas help protect a company against fraud, theft, and abuse. Certain areas are more susceptible to these issues, and require more...

...The operating system that I use for work runs on Windows 7 Enterprise and for work purposes it works well. I am in the Army so money is typically no issue when acquiring tech support from the Microsoft end as well as through here at work. If I did work for a smaller company, I might be more open to utilizing Linux into the work place. I am no expert, but I have been experimenting with the Ubunto system. One of the main differences that is clear is that Window’s 7 is a product of Microsoft which uses NT as its kernel. In order to use Windows you must pay for the product and the support, but it must be noted that most updates are free but newer versions are not. Also a great plus for Ubunto is free open source software and does not have a designated technical support center. Ubunto’s kernel is Linux which differs from Windows. This is not too much of a problem for an experienced user but for a newcomer, this is a definite negative aspect. Another difference between the two systems is that security comes already installed with Ubunto; Windows on the other hand, does not come with security installed. In order to make sure your files and network is protected you must purchase security from Microsoft or other compatible vendors. While both systems are deemed as user friendly, I seem to have a harder time with Ubunto, but I think that may be due to the many years of experience of using Windows that has led to that situation. Another key difference is that there is lots of...
