. A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.
2008 College Board authorized practice test: In many works of literature, a main character has a mentor or mentor-like acquaintance whose influence dramatically changes how the character views not only himself or herself, but the world as well. Choose a novel or play in which a mentor exhibits such a strong influence, either beneficial or harmful, on one of the main characters. Then, in a well-organized essay, discuss the nature of the mentor's influence and its significance to the work as a whole.
2005. In Kate Chopin's The Awakening (1899), protagonist Edna Pontellier is said to possess "that outward existence which conforms, the inward life that questions." In a novel or play that you have studied, identify a character who outwardly conforms while questioning inwardly. Then write an essay in which you analyze how this tension between outward conformity and inward questioning contributes to the meaning of the work. Avoid mere plot summary.
1997. Novels and plays often include scenes of weddings, funerals, parties, and other social occasions. Such scenes may reveal the values of the characters and the society in which they live. Select a novel or play that includes such a scene and, in a focused essay, discuss the contribution the scene makes to the meaning of the work as a whole. You may choose a work from the list below or another novel or play of literary merit.
1996. The British novelist Fay Weldon offers this observation about happy endings. "The writers, I do believe, who get the best and most lasting response from their readers are the writers who offer a happy ending through moral development. By a happy ending, I do not mean mere fortunate events -- a marriage or a last minute rescue from death -- but some kind of spiritual reassessment or moral reconciliation, even with the self, even at death." Choose a novel or play that has the kind of ending Weldon describes. In a well-written essay, identify the "spiritual reassessment or moral reconciliation" evident in the ending and explain its significance in the work as a whole.
1995. Writers often highlight the values of a culture or a society by using characters who are alienated from that culture or society because of gender, race, class, or creed. Choose a novel or a play in which such a character plays a significant role and show how that character's alienation reveals the surrounding society's assumptions or moral values.

Successful Students

...Tips for Successful Students Throughout my whole life, I can always remember time management being a strong point, whether it be in school or work. The statement, “you will either control time or be controlled by it” (Lake, A. & von Baeyer, C. 2005) has always lingered in the back of my mind, as my parents would say this to me often when trying to balance life, school, and work. Having a strong sense of time management has given me the ability to balance whatever it is I am confronted with. Whether it be finding time to do school assignments while working full time and also continuing my busy life, or whether it be passing meds, doing dressing changes, placing a foley, and admitting a patient all within a busy hour, time management is essential. Not only does it allow for a less-stressful flow, it also allows me to accomplish my tasks in a timely fashion and feel organized and in-control of what I am doing. I feel having this characteristic as a strong point will help me in this course because not only do I work full-time at night, but I also- like most other students- have a busy life surrounding me as well. Being able to manage what is laid out in front of me will assist in me being a successful student, without neglecting work or my personal life. Procrastination isn’t in the equation for being successful, as leaving tasks for later can lead to mistakes or to be forgotten. Scheduling your time can only be done by you; Do it wisely. (Richie S. & Alspaugh, L. 2011). ...

Anime/ Bad Influence on All Children Under 13

...Since the 1960s anime has boomed into a world wide label for cartoons. However, these cartoons can be a bad influence for children of a certain age, poor examples for viewers to follow, and has not established any creative guide lines. During the past decade or so anime has boomed into entertainment for many different age groups. From a giant robot battle in space to fighting ninjas with deadly weapons, ninjutsu, and giant foxes fighting giant snakes and frogs, anime reaches out to many audiences. When children under the age of thirteen see this stuff they may attempt to try it them-self, and with no parent to tell them what is real and what is not, then it may be attempted by the viewer. If a child under thirteen reads the manga (anime books) and some one is reading it with them, then that adult supervision can protect them from bad influences that might see. An adult needs to be with the child while watching the anime series or reading the book. Without parental viewing then the child will not know that the violence in the anime, or manga books should not be imitated in the real world. In fact a child died while mimicking Gaara. (from what I know, his friends burried his head in a sand box) this is off of a show called Naruto other anime such as this are know as Bleach, Inuyasha, Death Note has a warning, but is not strong or specific. If a child can imitate this there is no telling what else will happen next. If a child under thirteen watches these shows and does not imitate...

The secret, Chiang says, is to "begin by knowing that you have already arrived." Jonathan Livingston Seagull Reflection

...Jonathan Livingston Seagull Reflection Jonathan Livingston Seagull Richard Bach The novel Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a very fantastic novel. I have judged this novel very wrongly because I really thought that’s it’s all just about a dump of boring seagulls that search for enlightenment and predictably ends finding it. But it wasn’t! It suddenly became one of my favorite novels of all time. Living in this world full of people, pretending to be something they’re not, I realized that every one of us is trying to fit in. For me, this novel will really help out those people who fear to be uncovered and I should know. This novel is all about creativity and individuality. To stand up for something you strongly believe in is really brave indeed. Creativity, I should say, makes us smarter. Routine living dulls our mind. Creative expression gives our brain a workout, activating new circuits in our grey matter. Creativity does not necessarily require an act of will or sweat on the brow. It’s about getting beyond logic and to see more than meets the eye. Creativity asks us to change the way we live our lives, to turn away from the “normal” way of doing things and express individuality. Conformity isn’t creative. Neither is routine. Jonathan did exactly the same. He turned away from the norm and started up all on his own as an outcast. Later, he found out the true meaning of life which is to touch perfection and show it forth. All this he learned in a very dramatic...

Jonathan Livingston Seagull

...This is a story for people who follow their dreams and make their own rules; a story that has inspired people for decades. For most seagulls, life consists simply of eating and surviving. Flying is just a means of finding food. However, Jonathan Livingston Seagull is no ordinary bird. For him, flying is life itself. Against the conventions of seagull society, he seeks to find a higher purpose and become the best at doing what he loves. This is a fable about the importance of making the most of our lives, even if our goals run contrary to the norms of our flock, tribe or neighbourhood. Through the metaphor of flight, Jonathan’s story shows us that, if we follow our dreams, we too can soar. ‘Richard Bach with this book does two things. He gives me Flight. He makes me Young.
