A little research into their company website, reveals that Wegmans is a family-owned grocery market chain with over 84 stores scattered throughout six states in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The company started business in 1916 when John Wegman and his brother, Walter, opened the Rochester Fruit & Vegetable Company and peddled fresh produce from a push-cart. In 1921, the company broadened its footprint when the brothers purchased the Seel Grocery Company, and their inventory of goods expanded to include a larger variety of groceries and baked goods. The Wegmans opened their first namesake family store in 1930 that featured the addition of fresh meats, produce, and dairy to their list of goods, and they featured a cafeteria fitting over 300 people. (Wegmans, 2015) Over the years, the company would incorporate new advancements in grocer related technologies, as well as a robust program of employee benefits and education. The Wegmans Scholarship Program was created in 1983 along with the Wegmans Federal Credit Union in 1986.
