Westover Electrical Inc
Problem definition:
Westover Electrical Inc. is facing an increasing problem with the rejected products found during the manufacturing operation where they couldn’t find the source of the problem. For the past two months, the costs incurred due to these rejects have increased and as a result the company decided to act as soon as possible.
This report defines the investigation done to find the problem by studying the supply chain starting with the production floor in the winding department and then going to the packaging department. In the winding department, no one knows what the problem is or how to correct it. In the packaging department, many windings are found to be defective and require reworking before they can be packaged. This is consuming a lot of time and rework. The report then gives the results found and the recommendations suggested for the problem.

William Byrd

...William Byrd, a great legal advisor and political activist in early eighteenth-century Virginia, is also considered one of the best known writers to emerge from his generation. Byrd's diary was kept in a secret shorthand and discovered only in the twentieth century. It provides insight into the mind of a southern gentleman. Byrd's diary also lets us see the daily schedule and the thoughts of a gentleman. Byrd committed to his diary some of his most private thoughts and actions. Byrd shows the sincere love and affection that he had for his wives. In reading Byrd’s first "Secret Diary," it is apparent that he believed that his wife, Lucy, should submit to his authority. Yet even though Byrd believes in his superiority, he continuously defers to his wife, appears to be quite concerned about her, and spends much of his free time with her—not the actions of someone who hates and distrusts women. In an entry made on March 31, 1709, he states, "My wife was out of humor for nothing. however, I endeavored to please her again, having consideration for a woman’s weakness" (13). Another entry on July 12, 1709 reads, "My wife was very melancholy, but I comforted her as well as I could and was troubled to see her so" (31). He was quite naturally concerned with his wife’s health, especially during pregnancy and often restricted her activities during this time. Generally, his diaries do not focus on wild, sexual escapades, which other writings may suggest, but on discreet acts of intimacy with...

Miranda V. ARIZONA: A Brief Summary

...MIRANDA v. ARIZONA 384 U.S. 436 (1966) CERTIORARI TO THE SUPREME COURT OF ARIZONA. No. 759. Argued February 28 - March 1, 1966. Decided June 13, 1966. Facts: The United States Supreme Court combined four separate cases into one ruling due to similar issues regarding the way evidenced was obtained during police interrogations. All four Defendants (Ernesto Miranda, Michael Vignera, Carl Calvin Westover, and Roy Allen Stewart) committed separate, unrelated crimes, but all were questioned without a lawyer present and were not notified of their Fifth Amendment rights of protection from self-incrimination (“Nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself”). Miranda was arrested and signed a confession for kidnapping and rape. He later was found guilty and appealed to the Supreme Court of Arizona. Here, the Supreme Court Justices held that Miranda’s rights were not violated while obtaining the confession. Vignera was arrested and admitted to robbery without being notified of...

Health Care Management Errors in a Post Modern/Complex Adaptive System

...fails to account for employees’ ability to learn safe practices by experimenting on their own to increase productivity and jeopardize current standards put in place. This scenario is an error because the manager failed to see the inevitability of change. As resources become scarcer, employees are going to search for ways to increase their productivity as they feel more pressure to produce. A manger with a post modernist perspective would act as a change agent and anticipate the need for increased productivity and would implement the changes necessary prior to their staff experimenting on their own. “The change agent's job is to develop a climate for planned change by overcoming resistances and rallying forces for positive growth,” (Westover, 2010). Scenario 2: A manager puts all employees through the same orientation program with no regard to cultural differences, therefore laying groundwork for conflict due to misinterpretation of role assignments. This scenario...

Obese Should Pay Higher Premiums

...(THESIS) Obese people should have to pay higher premiums. The heavier a person is the higher your insurance is going to go up due to the health risk factor. When you work for a business or company full-time the insurance is through them and they just take the payment out of everyone’s paycheck. It is not fair to the people of normal weight to be responsible for the payment of high insurance that goes along with obesity. Instead of everyone paying the same amount they should determine each person’s own premium. Also, the people that are paying higher premiums because they are obese should get something out of it as well, they shouldn’t just be penalized for being overweight. (STATEMENT OF CASE) It seems to be that most of the population is now considered obese, or overweight. With being overweight comes health risks and these health risks associated with obesity land you into the hospital. As we all know taking a visit to the hospital is not cheap, but it seems non-overweight people are paying for the self-inflecting obese people. There should be a way to determine one person’s premium, they can do it for car insurance, why not health insurance as well. Furthermore, if employers are expecting overweight people to pay more for insurance they should get something out of it. BODY (POINT 1) It seems that obese people are taking the money right out of our pockets. The taxpayers and people that copay for health insurance are paying for people to have free healthcare. These people...

Eurozone

...the European Union grew, an idea was formed to enhance the economic cohesiveness of the many member nations. In 1992 the Maastrict Treaty was established to create a universal currency for members of the European Union who wanted to participate (cited in Lynn, 2012, p. 25). Those nations that joined this Eurozone can be seen in Figure 1 as indicated by their blue color. Figure 1 Members who abandoned their national currency in favor of the new "Euro" currency became known as members of the "Eurozone" (Ashton, 2012). By linking a single currency to multiple economic engines, the Euro quickly gained value and popularity. After roughly one decade of existence, the Euro surpassed the par value of the United States dollar in 2003 (Westover, 2011). As financial reserves increasingly switched from dollars to euros, the outlook for the European Union seemed almost guaranteed. Although not perfect, many hailed the creation of this economic machine as brilliant. Never before...

Miranda V Arizona

...Miranda v. Arizona: Half a Century Later by: September 2nd, 2014 I. INTRODUCTION A. Executive Summary – In 1966, the U.S. Supreme Court deliberated the case Miranda v. Arizona the most important aspect of due process and criminal procedure ever affecting law enforcement and prosecutorial conduct of an investigation. The main issues in this case were: * The admissibility of a defendant’s statements if such statements were made while the defendant was held in police custody or deprived of freedom of movement in a significant way; * What procedures were required to guarantee the defendant’s privilege against self-incrimination according to the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution? This case is considered the summit of the criminal procedure evolution establishing specific procedures to safeguard the rights of defendants beyond the courtroom and onto the police station. The procedural details and the breadth of civil rights tangled in these four cases, made this decision the pinnacle case in the area of criminal procedure. Nowadays, this decision gave the name to what is widely known as the “Miranda Warnings” which include: 1. The suspect has the right to remain silent, 2. Anything he/she says may be used as evidence against him, 3. He/she has a right to the presence of an attorney during questioning, and 4. If indigent, he/she has a right to a lawyer selected for him without charge. II. STATEMENT OF FACTS RELATING TO THE...

A New House- Readiness

...A New House-Readiness Alesia Rushin XECO212 05/18/2012 Thomas Westover A New House-Readiness The apartment that I live in is too small for my baby and me. However many people say this is the best time to buy a house because the interest rates and prices are low. The rent on the apartment that I have is constant going up and up. I believe that in the years to come rental rate will continue to go up. In looking for a house if I can lock into a low fix rate my mortgage will stay the same? In addition, because of the economy banks and owner are passionate about selling their homes therefore this would be a good time for me to purchase a home. The first principle that I think plays a major role in my decision is number two. “The cost of something is what you give up to get it. I have to look at the fact of the alternative if I do not move I will have to stay in this small apartment which is far from school and local services. Therefore, I give up the negative in the apartment to get the thing that I need especially a bigger place. The next principle that I believe is major in my decision process is number three. Rational people think at the margin it may be wise to make small adjustment first before I purchase a house. The margin benefit that I may consider is the total benefit if I was to purchase a house. The marginal cost would be the total money that I may have to pay in the house. For instance, maintenance on the house as well as the mortgage will be additional cost...

Week Three Paper

...Week 3 Assignment 1 Strayer University Managing Organizational Change HRM560 October 23, 2013 Week 3 Assignment 1 1. Using Kotter’s model, identify the three (3) most significant errors made out of all of the change stories presented and describe the ramifications of those mistakes. a) The first significant effort I’d like to discuss is Kodak’s evolution into the digital technology era. I believe the Kotter’s error that relates to them most is, “failing to create short-term wins”. While Kodak felt as if they were making the correct decision, a big goal, coupled with limited planning is a recipe for disaster. Also, by not implementing a series of short-terms wins the staff and investors were both left to wonder what is considered success. If those benchmarks had been set the concern from both of the aforementioned parties could have been ceased or negated altogether. b) The second significant error was made by McDonalds. I believe the Kotter’s error that applies to their scenario is, “Allowing too much complacency”. As an established and well known brand, it is easy for industry leaders such as McDonalds to get complacent. As times change so does the customer. Today’s society is more cognizant of health risk, and now more than ever it is trendy to diet and exercise. As a leading fast-food chain McDonalds should have been ahead of the trend by ways of their research and development. Their complacency resulted in lawsuits and a identify crises that...

...Miranda v. Arizona What are the important facts? Miranda was arrested for rape and kidnaping of an 18 year old girl. He was taken in custody. He was then interrogated by two police officers for two hours, which resulted in a signed, written confession. A written confessions were presented to the jury. Miranda was found guilty of kidnapping and rape and was sentenced to 20-30 years imprisonment on each count. On appeal, the Supreme Court of Arizona held that Miranda’s constitutional rights were not violated in obtaining the confession. What is the question the court is being asked to answer? Whether “statements obtained from an individual who is subjected to custodial police interrogation” are admissible against him in a criminal trial and whether “procedures which assure that the individual is accorded his privilege under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution not to be compelled to incriminate himself” are necessary. How did the Court rule? Supreme Court holding" the Fifth Amendment privilege is available outside of criminal court proceedings and serves to protect persons in all settings in which their freedom of action is curtailed in any significant way from being compelled to incriminate themselves.” As such, “the prosecution may not use statements, whether exculpatory or inculpatory, stemming from custodial interrogation of the defendant unless it demonstrates the use of procedural safeguards effective to secure the privilege against self-incrimination. Why did the...

Miranda V. Arizona

...2305 October 12, 2015 Miranda V. Arizona (1966) No. 759 In 1963 Ernesto Miranda was arrested for the kidnapping and rape of a 18 year old female although he confessed under police interrogation, he was never informed of his right to remain silent. Miranda was eventually convicted but appealed to the Supreme Court in 1966 claiming his confession was unconstitutional. In the case the Supreme Court was tasked with deciding whether or not law officials must inform a defendant of his or her rights prior to investigation. The court reviewed three other cases, in Vignera V. New York, Westover V. United States, and California V. Stewart in all these cases suspects were questioned by police officers, detectives, and prosecuting attorneys in rooms that where cut off from the outside world. In none of these cases were suspects given warnings of their rights at the outset of their interrogation. The case was argued between the days of Feb 28, Mar 1, & 2 (1966) on June 13, 1966 under Chief Justice Earl Warren who had presided over the landmark Brown V. Board of Education (1954). In a 5-4 decision the court overturned Miranda’s conviction because Miranda was not explicitly informed of his rights under the Fifth and Sixth Amendments of the Constitution thus to protect these rights in the face of widespread ignorance of the law...
